AHSTW Lady Vikes ended their season last year with a 9-2 loss to Missouri Valley in the second round of the Class 1A Playoffs. The Lady Vikes will have Kathleen Pace, who will be in her first year as coach.

Coach Pace talked about how practice has been going.

The Lady Vikes first softball game will be Tuesday May 21st, when they take on Audubon in a Western Iowa Conference regular season game. That game will start at 7:15 p.m.

Strong pitching from Laramie Stoakes and Gabe Funk held Atlantic to 1 hit and the Lenox Tigers racked up 13 hits on their way to a 11-4 win over Atlantic on Monday night in Atlantic.

Both teams exchanged runs early on in the first three innings to have the ball game tied 2-2. The momentum then shifted in the top of the fourth when the Tigers went on to score six straight runs off of four base hits and a few wild pitches.  Lenox then led 8-2 after 4. The Tigers cruised to the win from there with the Trojans only threatening a big inning in the 7th when they scored two.

Stoakes got the win with 7 strikeouts. Gabe Funk finished with 4 strikeouts and only allowed 2 runs. Looking back on the game, Atlantic Head Coach Nathan Block credited the fourth inning for being a decisive moment in the game.

Tristan Hayes started the game for Atlantic but was subbed out for Keston Schmitt who threw over 5 strikeouts. Jaice Larson had one hit on the night and Sawyer Tarell had one RBI. Even with the way the Trojans hit on the night Coach Block saw some positive moments from the Atlantic pitching core.

After the game Coach Block’s message to his team was don’t let one game define you.

The Trojans fall to 0-1 to start the year and will get ready to face Missouri Valley on Tuesday night.  Lenox improves to 1-o on the season and will travel to face Creston Tuesday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sophomore LHP Cade Obermueller has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday. The honor is the second Big Ten weekly honor of his career.

The Iowa City, Iowa, native threw five innings of one-hit ball on Friday night against FIU in Des Moines, Iowa. Obermueller struck out seven while walking one.

This season, Obermueller has a 4-3 record with a 4.12 ERA. He has held opposing hitters to a .189 batting average and has 66 strikeouts in 54.2 innings of work.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Wednesday in the Big Ten Tournament as they are set to face the Michigan Wolverines at 2 p.m. CT in Omaha, Nebraska.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa gymnastics senior Adeline Kenlin has announced that she will return for a fifth year for the 2025 season.

“My goal is to be a leader for the next generation of Hawkeye gymnasts,” said Kenlin. “It is time for us to reclaim what it means to be a Hawkeye and what is means for us to represent the next generation of gymnasts. There are things to still to accomplish and records to break. Let’s Go Hawks. I. AM. BACK!!!!”

Kenlin, a two-time all-American, competed in three meets in 2024 before suffering a season ending injury. In the 2024 opener, Kenlin posted a career-high in the all-around scoring 39.575, tied for eighth in program history. She also matched her career-best on vault, bars and floor in 2024.

The Iowa City, Iowa, native was the NCAA runner-up on beam in 2022. Kenlin has her name in the Iowa record book five different times, including tying the school record on beam in 2021 scoring a 9.975.

The Exira-EHK Spartans are coming off a 6-0 loss to Alta-Aurelia in the second round of the Class 1A-Region 7 playoff bracket. The Spartans will be coached by Randy Kelly.

Coach Kelly talked about the teams last years playoff loss to Alta-Aurelia.

The Spartans have been getting a few morning sessions in, to help enable other spring sport athletes to join practice.

Coach Kelly talked about who is going to be his stand out players on the team.

Coach Kelly commented on playing in a tough Rolling Valley Conference this season.

The Spartans first baseball game will be Monday May 20th, when they will host AC/GC in a non-conference game. First pitch of that game will be at 7:30 p.m.

The Riverside girl’s softball team is getting ready for their 2023-2024 softball season. The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-0 loss to Woodbine in the Class 1A – Region 3 playoff bracket. Riverside is going to be coached by Lacie Patterson, who is in her second season.

Coach Patterson talked about the season loss to Woodbine in the post-season last year.

The Bulldogs have managed well despite not having everyone at practice due to other spring sports obligations.

Coach Patterson said Riverside is going to have many pitching options for the season.

Coach Patterson talked about the hardest part of being a Bulldogs coach.
