Iowa COVID-19 update for 12/27/20: 620 new cases, 1 death

The Iowa Department of Public Health Sunday (10-a.m.), reported 274,933 confirmed cases statewide since Iowa’s outbreak began, with an additional 620 cases confirmed in the past 24 hours. The Iowa DPH reported 1 additional COVID-19 death, raising the statewide death toll to 3,745. Of Iowa’s pandemic-related deaths, COVID-19 is reported as the underlying cause for 3,439 deaths. For 306 Iowans, COVID-19 was a contributing factor to their deaths. The website said 3,431 of the state’s deaths involved Iowans with preexisting conditions.

The Iowa DPH reports 125 COVID-19 outbreaks among long-term care facilities in the state, accounting for 5,212 of Iowa’s current positive cases. COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities account for 1,137 of the state’s total deaths.

Iowa DPH reports 553 hospitalizations, of which 109 patients are in intensive care units. Iowa hospitals admitted 71 patients in the last 24 hours, compared to 76 hospitalizations the day before. Hospitals in western/southwest Iowa (RMCC Region 4) report: 34 hospitalized; 12 are in an ICU; 3 people were admitted, and 8 people are on a ventilator.

The are 125 Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities reporting COVID-19 outbreaks, which is unchanged from Saturday. There are 5,211 positive cases and 3,255 recoveries reported within those facilities. The state reports a total of 1,137 deaths within long-term care facilities

According to the state’s website, a total of 1,341,403 Iowans received COVID-19 tests. Iowa’s average reported positivity rate is 12% over the last 14 days.

Red Oak man arrested Sat. night on assault & interference charges

Red Oak Police report the arrest at around 10:15-p.m., Saturday, of 33-year old Joshua Kenneth Wolcott, from Red Oak. He was taken into custody in the 100 block of E. Market Street, and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault/1st offense, by impeding air flow, and, Interference with Official Acts. Wolcott was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

Overnight shooting in Council Bluffs

Police in Council Bluffs responded at around 1:30-a.m. today (Sunday), to a shooting that took place at Woodbury Pines Apartments at 530 Woodbury Avenue, where a man had possibly been shot in the leg with a shotgun. Officers arrived and found the victim lying in the parking lot with a wound to his leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. No other persons were injured in the incident, and the suspect remains unknown.

2 dead, 1 injured in eastern Iowa wrong-way, head-on crash

A vehicle heading in the wrong direction on Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa’s Scott County, collided head-on with another vehicle, causing the death of two people and injuries to one other. The Iowa State Patrol reports the crash happened at mile marker 285.5 near Walcott, at around 11:25-p.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the public had reported multiple times, that a 1999 Chrysler Concorde was traveling eastbound on I-80 in the westbound lanes, prior to crashing into a 2020 Infiniti QX-60. Two people died at the scene. One person suffered unknown injuries and was transported to a local hospital. No names were released, pending notification of family.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo and Walcott Police Departments, and emergency medical personnel.

20-25 train cars derail after small bridge collapses in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say 20 to 25 train cars derailed near Des Moines area after a small bridge collapsed. The Des Moines Register reports that the Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the collapse happened Friday morning in the northeast part of the county. It closed roads in the area for nearly 12 hours.

Sgt. Ryan Evans, of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, described what happened as a “mess.” The sheriff’s office is assisting Union Pacific with the investigation.

LADELLE HANSON, age 88, of Manilla, died December 25th at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services for LADELLE HANSON will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, December 31st,  at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla has the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4 PM to 6 PM on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at funeral home.; Visitation will then resume at 9:30 AM Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.

Burial is in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla.

DONNA M. LEONARD, 89, of Persia, died Thursday, Dec. 24th at home. Funeral services for DONNA LEONARD will be held 2-p.m. Monday, Dec. 28th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 1-until 2-pm, Monday.

Burial is in the Valley View Cemetery at Persia.

MILTON EARL MUELLER, 90, of Council Bluffs (& formerly of Walnut), died Thursday, Dec. 24th, at the Primrose Retirement Community, in Council Bluffs. Graveside services with Military Honors for MILTON MUELLER will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2nd, 2021, at the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut. Fatal accident in Council Bluffs Saturday morning

(Update 7:15-p.m.: The driver/crash victim was identified as 50-year-old Stephen Johnson, of Omaha)

An official with the Council Bluffs Police Department reports one person died in a single-vehicle accident late Saturday morning. According to Lt. Mark Galvan, emergency crews responded at around 10:15-a.m. to I‐480 Eastbound at Exit 0, to investigate a report of a single vehicle accident that was off of the roadway. The vehicle had left the roadway for unknown reasons and came to rest against a tree.

Council Bluffs PD Shield

The driver and lone occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene by Paramedics. The investigation has been turned over to the Council Bluffs Police Departments Special Operations unit for further investigation. The identity of the driver was being withheld, pending notification of family.

Argument leads to deadly Christmas night shooting in Iowa

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man fatally shot a relative on Christmas Day in an Iowa home. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 4:30 p.m. after a resident called 911 to report that there had been a shooting between family members. The wounded man was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies determined that there was an argument before the shooting. Capt. Mark Herbst of the sheriff’s department said in a news release that the investigation is ongoing and no names were immediately released.
