Girl’s state wrestling tourney going to 2 classes

Sports

May 23rd, 2024 by Seth Tiegs

The Iowa Girls’ State Wrestling meet is expanding to two classes. Radio Iowa’s Dar Danielson reports.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union added girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport two years ago and the first two state tournaments were held with no classes. The largest 64 wrestling schools will now be in Class 2-A and the remaining schools in Class 1-A for this year’s meet. Wrestlers will compete in regional meets with the top 16 qualifiers by weight in each class advancing to the state tournament February 6th-7th in Coralville. Girls Union executive director Erin Gerlich said in a statement that the rapid rise in number of girls participating in wrestling has exceeded thier expectations and they hope the addition of classes will encourage more schools to add programs. There are 204 schools sponsoring a girls’ wrestling program in 2024, with 61 other schools in cooperative sharing agreements for teams.

Girls Wrestling Moves to Two Classes For 2024-2025 Season

May 23rd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

At its May meeting, the Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union approved the move to two classes for the 2024-25 girls’ wrestling season.

The move will place the 64 largest wrestling schools into Class 2A, with the remaining schools competing in Class 1A.

Wrestlers will compete to qualify for the state tournament at regional meets across the state on Friday January 31, 2025. There will be eight regional state qualifying sites hosted by schools for both Class 1A and 2A.

The top 16 qualifiers from each weight class will qualify for the 2025 Girls State Wrestling Tournament, which will be held February 6-7 in Xtream Arena in Coralville. The Girls State Wrestling Tournament will remain a two-day tournament, with separate sessions for each class on February 6 and combined sessions for the championship sessions on Friday, February 7.

“The rapid rise of participants in girls wrestling has exceeded even our expectations,” said IGHSAU Executive Director Erin Gerlich. “Adding a second class is the next building block in our efforts to continue to help the sport grow. The hope is that the addition of a second class will encourage more schools to add girls’ wrestling programs.”

The IGHSAU sanctioned girls’ wrestling in 2022 and has been a one-class tournament since beginning competition in 2023. In 2024, 204 schools sponsored a girls’ wrestling program, while 61 other schools were listed in cooperative sharing agreements.

Then senior Riley Wood singled off the left field fence and knocked in a run. Sophomore Lila Wiederstein walked with the bases loaded and knocked in a run, Atlantic had many chances to get on base but Kohl kept the Trojans bats silent all night with only allowing five hits, while striking out nine.

Trojans Coach Terry Hinzman commented on playing a good team like Missouri Valley.

Wood started the game for the Trojans but sophomore Zoey Kirchoff stepped up in relief.

The Trojans now fall to 1-1 overall with the loss and will now play Denison-Schleswig on Thursday May 23rd. Missouri Valley now improves to 1-1 overall and will host Underwood on Thursday May 23rd.

Hawkeyes Drop B1G Tournament Opener in Extras

Sports

May 22nd, 2024 by Seth Tiegs

OMAHA, Neb. – The fifth-seeded University of Iowa baseball team fell to No. 4 seeded Michigan, 3-2, in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field.
The Hawkeyes outhit the Wolverines, 10-6.

“It is frustrating for us when they beat us 3-2 and didn’t have a hit to score any of those runs,” said head coach Rick Heller. “They were all from free bases. We had the wild pitch that we throw away with two outs that scores two runs and then we walk in a run to end the game.”

The Hawkeyes got on the board in the second inning after Michael Seegers doubled in Ben Wilmes from first.

Michigan loaded the bases in the sixth inning and two runs came around to score on a wild pitch and an error.

Iowa tied the game in the top of the seventh after Will Mulflur drew a walk and Wilmes doubled him in.

The teams would remain even until a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning plated a run for the Wolverines and ended the game.

“We couldn’t get it going offensively,” said Heller. “Anything that we did do happened late. We couldn’t get lead-off guys, to try to make things happen and put some pressure on them. We had a couple opportunities to execute, and we didn’t get that done either. It cost us, and it cost us big.”

Brody Brecht got the start on the mound for Iowa. He threw 7 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out 10 and walked two.

Jack Young threw 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run. He struck out three, walked three and allowed two hits.

Seegers was 3-for-4 and Wilmes and Davis Cop each tallied two hits for the Hawkeyes.

The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. (CT) for an elimination game against the No. 1 seeded Illinois Fighting Illini at Charles Schwab Field.
