Iowa’s Jordan Amelon and Kaevon Merriweather Earn B1G Outstanding Sportsmanship Awards

Sports

June 20th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former Hawkeyes Jordan Amelon (women’s golf) and Kaevon Merriweather (football) have been selected as Iowa’s 2023 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners. The duo were chosen from Iowa’s list of 2022-23 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winners, which had a representative from each varsity sport.

Amelon, an Iowa City, Iowa native, posted a 78.46 scoring average over 32.5 rounds during her senior season. Amelon played in 11 tournaments in 2022-23, which included a career-best 34th place showing at the Fresno Golf Classic. She also tied for 35th at the National Golf Invitational, helping the Hawkeyes to a team runner-up finish. During the fall, Amelon shot a career low round of 70 (-2) at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Colorado.

Merriweather, a native of Belleville, Michigan, was named first-team All-America by Pro Football Focus, second-team All-America by Sporting News and Associated Press, and third-team All-America by Phil Steele. Merriweather was named first-team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele, second-team All-Big Ten by Associated Press and honorable mention All-Big Ten by league coaches and media. He was named a Permanent Team Captain, defense, and earned the Coaches Appreciation Award, defense. He was also recognized with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. His career statistics include 118 tackles, with four interceptions for 33 yards and one fumble return for a 30-yard touchdown. Merriweather was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s win at Rutgers in 2022, as he had a fumble return touchdown and a pass interception. As a senior, Merriweather was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Jason Whitten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, while he was recognized by Iowa media with the Duke Slater Golden Gavel Award as a junior. That award is presented to the Iowa football player who not only is most cooperative with local media, but exhibits themselves with professional integrity in all interactions. He was a member of the Player Council as a junior and senior. Merriweather participated in the 2023 Senior Bowl and signed a free agent contract with Tampa Bay.

The Big Ten first awarded the Outstanding Sportsmanship honor in 2003. Sports

June 20th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will conclude its summer with a three-game tour of Paris and Spain in August, the program announced on Tuesday.

Head coach Fran McCaffery’s squad will make its way across the Atlantic Ocean on Aug. 5 before returning home Aug. 16. The Hawkeyes’ trip will take them to the Paris, Valencia and Barcelona with three games against opponents to be determined at a later date.

The Hawkeyes will spend four days in Paris (Aug. 6-9), three days in Valencia (Aug. 10-12) and three days in Barcelona (Aug. 13-15).

“We are grateful to have the resources available to provide this opportunity for our student-athletes,” McCaffery said. “Not only will our players experience different cultures and create lifelong memories with their teammates, but we get 10 extra team practices leading up to the trip. With us adding six new players, I believe this is a perfect time for this opportunity.”

The trip will be the first for Iowa since the program visited Germany, Switzerland and Italy in the summer of 2017.

“I could not be more excited for the opportunity our team has to go overseas this summer,” said Sandfort. “The extra practices will greatly benefit our new guys and our overall team by developing our on-court bond. The opportunity to see new cultures that few of us have experienced will be a special experience while allowing our team to become closer off the floor as well. This experience will benefit our team tremendously.”

Atlantic splits series with Glenwood and had a comeback to go with it

Sports

June 19th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Trojans played dramatic softball doubleheader and had an even series against Glenwood. The Trojans found themselves down 5-0 in the bottom of the 6th. Madison Huddleson stepped up to the plate and led an avalanche of runs to have the Trojans score 7 straight runs.

They would shut down the Rams offense in that first game thanks to 8th grader Peyton McLaren. When she appeared in the 5th inning, she struck out the first two batters she faced. McLaren would finish the first game with 6 strikeouts, 2 hits, and no runs. The Trojans won 7-5.

Coach Hinzmann took notice of her effort.

Game 2 of the doubleheader would go in favor of the Rams. They continually peppered in runs throughout the second game. Scoring 1 in the 2nd inning, 1 in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 2 in the 6th. It would be enough to overcome Atlantic at home and win 6-4.

Two different games were played, but Coach Hinzmann took away a few positives from the first one.

With the split series the Trojans now sit at 14-14 and will be on the road taking on Kuemper Catholic on June 20th. The Glenwood Rams are 12-8 and will be playing at home against Shenandoah on the 20th.

June 19th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa –The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be competing in the Bahamas this summer for a foreign trip, spending six nights and seven days at the Atlantis Paradise Resort. The Cyclones will play three games against international competition at the Imperial Ballroom, the home of the annual Battle 4 Atlantis each November.

Head coach T.J. Otzelberger said “We are thrilled with the opportunity to play three challenging opponents during our time in the Bahamas, the trip will provide us with quality games against international teams preparing for the FIBA World Cup. It will also help our team grow closer as we start our journey to next season.”

The trip will take place Aug. 4-10, with games played on three of the days. Iowa State will face the Bahamas Select Team on Aug. 6, Zalgiris-2 (Lithuania) on Aug. 7 and Obras Basket (Argentina) to close the trip on Aug. 9. Andrew Lehman prepares for first John Deere Classic as Director

Sports

June 19th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic has a new leader as next month’s tournament gets set to tee off near the Quad Cities. Andrew Lehman is in his first year after replacing long-time tournament director Clair Peterson but the Carroll native is no stranger to the event.

As the smallest market to host a PGA Tour event Lehman says it takes a lot of work and community involvement to make it work.

The involvement of John Deere has been critical. Earlier this month the company announced a three-year extension as title sponsor through 2026.

The John Deere Classic is July sixth through the ninth.

Williamsburg softball has high expectations

Sports

June 19th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Williamsburg softball team has a goal of a state title this summer. The Raiders are 20-3 and top ranked in class 3A. They are coming off a loss over the weekend to class 5A second ranked Ankeny. Senior pitcher Peyton Driscoll is 10-1 and has an earned run average of under one.

Balance on offense has been a key and several young players are a factor. Four sophomores are hitting .300 or better.

Among the victories this season was a 4-3 triumph over a second ranked Davenport Assumption team that has won four state titles in the last six years.

Driscoll would love to close her high school career with a state title.

Driscoll will play at Kirkwood Community College next year. Williamsburg returns to action tonight at Center Point-Urbana.
