ARMSTRONG, Iowa (AP) — The mayor, police chief and current and former city clerk of a small Iowa town have been charged with a string of felonies and misdemeanors after a multi-year investigation uncovered embezzlement and other abuses, authorities say. The Emmett County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday in a news release that the Iowa Attorney General’s Office filed the charges against Armstrong Mayor Greg Buum, police chief Craig Merrill, city clerk Tracie Lang and former city clerk Connie Thackery on Thursday. The sheriff’s office said the investigation uncovered “misappropriation of city funds, the presentation of fraudulent public records, deploying a TASER against a civilian in exchange for cash, and falsification of ledgers to conceal embezzlement.”
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Kim Reynolds’ administration announced Friday it would not award a contract for an outside vendor to operate a call center to help residents find information about coronavirus vaccine appointments. The Iowa Department of Public Health informed several companies that had submitted emergency bids for the contract last week that it would not select any of them and was “continuing to evaluate call center solutions.” The department’s notice did not elaborate but cited an administrative rule that allows for bidding processes to be cancelled when in the state’s interest. The call center was to field inquiries about coronavirus vaccines, including helping screen residents for eligibility and set them up with providers to make appointments.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting at an apartment in Iowa City. The Iowa City Press Citizen reports that police were dispatched Friday night to the scene in the city’s Longfellow Neighborhood and found a man dead. Police said in a news release that a witness reported that three men had entered the residence, shot the victim and then fled. The release said police aren’t releasing the name of the victim until his family has been notified and an autopsy has been completed. There is a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa health officials say they will withhold COVID-19 vaccines from five counties next week because they did not use up to 80% of their allocation this week. Kelly Garcia, interim director of the Iowa Department of Public Health, said Friday the state is invoking a new rule, which is designed to minimize the amount of vaccine left in storage. She did not say what five counties are involved. Garcia says the counties are not being punished but are instead being given time to catch up in vaccinations. The counties will receive their full allocation of vaccine the following week if they meet the 80% target.

The Atlantic girls basketball team rolled to a 65-29 win over Greene County in the Class 3A Region 1 Quarterfinals on Saturday night at the Atlantic High School. The Trojans didn’t shoot the ball particularly well in the first quarter but got warmed up after that and used pressure defense to force the Rams into 21 turnovers. Atlantic led 37-24 at half and forced the running clock situation towards the end of the third. After the game Atlantic senior Lauren Nicholas said the team enjoys using that pressure defense
Haley Rasmussen had another big night with 28 points, 20 of those in the first half. Jada Jensen also finished in double figures with 13 points and Lauren Nicholas chipped in 8. The Trojans improved their season record to 9-13 and earned a trip to face top-ranked Cherokee, Washington on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Braves advanced on with a 77-40 dismantling of Kuemper Catholic on Saturday afternoon. We’ll have coverage of that Regional Semifinal on KJAN Wednesday. Nicholas said the team is excited about the opportunity.
Greene County was led in the loss by 14 points from Brianna Habben. The Rams finished the season with a record of 6-13.
In addition to the big scoring night Haley Rasmussen was honored after the game for another couple of scoring milestones. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — No. 22 Loyola Chicago rolled to an 81-54 victory against conference rival Drake. Aher Uguak led the Ramblers with 20 points by shooting 8 for 10 from the field. Loyola took control of the game with an 18-2 run to start the second half.
Uguak scored eight points in a two-minute span, including a layup that put Loyola ahead 51-38. The Ramblers moved into first place in the Missouri Valley standings.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Joe Wieskamp scored 21 points to lead Iowa’s balanced offense in an 88-58 win over Michigan State on Saturday. The Hawkeyes had three players score in double figures and Luka Garza wasn’t one of them. Garza had a season-low eight points on 3 of 11 shooting, but his teammates more than made up for the star senior being held well below his 20-point average.
Jack Nunge matched a career high with 18 points and Connor McCaffery had 16 points. The staggering Spartans are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997.
