IRVING, Texas – Iowa State women’s basketball guard Lexi Donarski picked up her fifth Freshman of the Week award, the league announced Monday. Today’s honor marks the third-straight week Donarski has claimed the award
Donarski had another big outing as she helped the Cyclones to their second ranked win of the season with an 85-68 win over then No. 18 West Virginia. Donarski netted 18 points and added three rebounds and two dimes as the Cyclones toppled WVU. She added four triples, shooting 4-of-8 from long range in the win.
Donarski is averaging 13.2 points on the season, which is the most of any freshman in the Big 12, while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from long range.
The honor was the eighth Freshman of the Week award for the Cyclones this season, as fellow freshmen Emily Ryan (2) and Kylie Feuerbach (1) have also claimed honors for the Cyclones.
Iowa State returns to the court on Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. to take on Kansas at home on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Clark has tallied 20 Big Ten Weekly honors on the season, including a Big Ten best 12 freshman honors, a Big Ten record five Big Ten Player of the Week honors as a freshman, and three Player of the Week Honor Roll nods. Minnesota’s Amanda Zahui B. previously held the record for most Player of the Week nods by a freshman. Clark’s five Big Ten Player of the Week honors as a freshman believed to be an NCAA record.
In three games last week, Clark averaged 26.3 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. She also added three blocks and three steals. In the three contests, Clark was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
Against No. 8 Maryland, Clark posted 29 points in the first half to break the program’s All-Time Freshman Scoring record. Clark finished the game with 34 total points against the Terrapins. Clark recorded her fifth consecutive and ninth-season 30-point game. Her nine 30-point games and five-consecutive are believed to be the most by a freshman in NCAA Division I women’s basketball since 2000. Clark’s nine 3-pointers are the most from a Hawkeye against a Big Ten opponent since Melissa Dixon recorded nine at Northwestern on Jan. 29, 2015. Clark finished the game with seven assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
In the Hawkeyes’ win over No. 12 Michigan, Clark tallied 27 points, nine assists, five rebounds, a block, and a steal. Clark was 7-for-12 (.583) from beyond the arc and 10-17 (.588) from the field.
In Iowa’s final game of the week at Wisconsin, Clark recorded her seventh career double-double, knocking down 18 points and dishing out a career-high 14 assists. Clark broke the Iowa women’s basketball all-time freshman assist record with 149 on the season, surpassing former Hawkeye Kathleen Doyle, who recorded 148 freshman assists during the 2016-17 season. Clark added two blocks and a steal to her stat line to finish the game.
Clark and the Hawkeyes travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the No. 11 Hoosiers on Wednesday, March 3 inside Assembly Hall. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Big Ten Network.

(Radio Iowa) – A group in the Iowa House is working on legislation that would erase the lowest level, non-violent felony convictions from a person’s record after a decade — if they aren’t convicted of another crime. The person would have to complete their sentence and pay all fines and court fees in order to have a Class D felony expunged. Drew Klein of Americans for Prosperity is urging legislators to pass the bill. “You’ve probably all heard me use that Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that, ‘If we treat people as they are. If we treat them as they could be, they become hopefully what they should be,'” Klein said. “And I think this bill moves us in that direction.”
Others say expunging non-violent felony convictions from decades ago can help Iowans qualify for professional licenses, get loans and sign leases. Representative Mary Wolfe, a Democrat from Clinton, says it would apply to non-violent offenses like criminal mischief, second degree theft or third offense drunken driving. “It is a piece of criminal justice reform that I think is important,” Wolfe says. “Many other states allow felonies to be expunged. This bill is more restrictive than several of those other states. Obviously, if somebody has a felony back in 2010 and they have another felony, they wouldn’t be eligible under this.”
Wolfe, who is an attorney, has been working on the bill after trying to help clients get their gun rights back. “Primarily so they could hunt with their children or grandchildren,” Wolfe says. “I had no luck assisting them in doing that and I just think there should be a path forward for non-violent offenders to get their firearms’ right back without having to kind of plead with the governor’s office.”
Under current law, Iowa’s governor reviews and decides upon applications from felons seeking restoration of second amendment rights after they’ve completed their sentences.

MARENGO, Iowa (AP) — The Pride of Iowa sandwich-making facility in east-central Iowa has been destroyed in a fire. Television station KCRG reports that firefighters were called to the plant in Marengo around 9 p.m. Saturday for the fire. Officials say the facility was closed and that no one was working in the building at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say crews were able to salvage one freezer, but the rest of the plant was destroyed. The Pride of Iowa makes sandwiches for sale in vending machines and at convenience stores.
Here’s a reminder from Xi Beta Phi, a $500 Reanne Gruhn Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to an Atlantic High School graduate who benefited from Resource Room Services in the Atlantic Community School District, or is planning a career in education. The scholarship was established by Xi Beta Phi Sorority in 2003 as a memorial to their sister, Reanne Gruhn.

ELVIN TANNATT, 95, of Fontanelle, died Saturday, February 27, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. Funeral services for ELVIN TANNATT will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, March 6th, at the United Methodist Church in Fontanelle. Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.
Visitation (without the family), will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 5th, from 2-until 7-p.m.
Burial is in the Fontanelle Cemetery with full military honors by the Fontanelle American Legion Carlson Post No. 247.

The Atlantic boys basketball team (14-6) gets a chance to punch a ticket to the 3A Boys State Tournament this evening with a Substate 8 Final meeting with Dallas Center-Grimes (19-3).
Atlantic earned their way to the Substate Final round with a thrilling road win at Glenwood last Thursday 63-59. The Trojans have been playing their best basketball at the end of the season and have won 11 of their last 12 games. Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling said the Trojans will get a great test from a talented Mustangs team.
Coach Ebling said they have kept the mindset of focusing one game at a time and now they have a chance to win one game to get to State. He said they want everyone involved to enjoy the moment.
Dallas Center-Grimes comes in averaging 65 points per game and have three players averaging in double figures. Junior Cole Glasgow has poured in 17.1 points per game to lead the Mustangs. Atlantic has averaged 58 points per contest and have been led by 17.1 per game from Skyler Handlos.
