Top Shot competition underway in Cass County (IA)

News, Sports

July 7th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic, Iowa) – A 7th Annual local shooting competition hosted by Erich and Tammy Wickman is underway in Cass County. The Wickman’s own Wickman Chemical. proceeds from the “Top Shot Cass County” competition are directed to the Atlantic Police Department and Police Reserves Children’s programs. The event has competitors vying for the title of “Top Shot Cass County.” Erich Wickman says every year the number of participants and the amount of money raised, increases. This year, there’s an additional competition, with the winner claiming a brand new rifle.

There’s also a fast and accurate, “Texas Star” shooting competition.

Erich Wickman pays for the prize weapons out of his own pocket. He hopes the event inspires others to create charitable events that benefit programs like those offered by the Atlantic Police Department and Police Reserves.

Cass County Sheriff Darby McLaren says he enjoys the good-natured rivalry between the Sheriff’s Office and Police.

Atlantic Police Chief Devin Hogue says his officers and reserves have put together a team. He’s grateful the event helps the department’s programs to enhance the lives of children and families in Cass County.

The various programs the Police and Reserves offer, like trips to the Omaha Zoo, camping/fishing, and Shop with a Cop, are designed to give kids an experience they might not otherwise have had, and a positive experience with law enforcement.

Sheriff McLaren agreed that’s it’s a positive experience for kids and law enforcement.

This past year, the competition raised over $10,000 for the Police Departments Children’s programs. The “Top Shot” event runs through August 4th, Monday through Thursday, from 5-p.m., until dark. Inexperienced shooters are welcome, and will be mentored by experienced shooters in a controlled environment, just let Erich and Tammy Wickman know your status (beginner or experienced), when you call. Erich encourages the ladies to come out too, and experience the “Texas Star” competition.

To scheduled your time to shoot, call (712)-243-7739.

EUGENE, Ore. – A mix of former and current University of Iowa track and field student-athletes kicked off day one of the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on Thursday.

Junior decathlete Austin West picked up where he left off from the NCAA Championships last month, setting personal bests in four of the five events to start his decathlon. West sped out of the blocks in the 100-meter, earning first place with his new best of 10.52. Following a fourth-place long jump of 7.35 meters (24’ 1.50”), West turned in another best during his second attempt in the shot put, throwing 14.31 meters (46’ 11.50”). After failing on his first two attempts at 1.99 meters, West clutched up and cleared the bar to stay alive in the high jump competition. Ultimately, the Hawkeye would finish seventh with a new personal record of 2.02 meters (6’ 7.50”). He capped his night with another career best, this time winning the 400-meter race in 46.31. Through five events, West has totaled 4,430 points and sits in second place, just 35 points off the lead.

Current Hawkeye Austin Kresley began his weekend in the 100-meter dash. Kresley competed against several familiar faces from the NCAA and finished in 10.26, good for 21st overall. He returns to action on Saturday night with the preliminary round of the men’s 200-meter dash.

Former Hawkeyes Brittany Brown and Reno Tuufuli represented the Hawkeyes well on day one. Brown cruised to a second-place finish in the women’s 100-meter race, qualifying for the semifinals on Friday afternoon. She will also compete in the women’s 200-meter dash on Saturday. Brown holds the school record in the event. Tuufuli, another Hawkeye alum and second all-time discus thrower, took sixth place in the men’s discus with a 61.72 meter (202’ 6”) toss.

Competition resumes on Friday with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 1:45 p.m (CT). U20 action also begins on Friday with the women’s 100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m.

Atlantic Softball wins big at home

Sports

July 6th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Softball team won 10-0 against the Red Oak Tigers in Atlantic tonight. The Trojans had 10 hits on the night and the Tigers had 7 errors. Lila Wiederstein was first to score for the Trojans with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 1st inning. It appeared to be competitive game when neither team could score in the second inning. The next three innings had the Trojans scoring three runs in each. It started with an RBI triple from Claire Pellett, which was followed by two RBI singles one from Zoey Kirchhoff and the other from Claire Schroder. The Trojans now led 4-0 and did not let go until an RBI bunt from Claire Pellett brought the tenth run home. It would be a run rule victory for Atlantic. The Team came out of the dugout to celebrate and shift their focus to Saturday’s matchup.

Coach Terry Hinzmann was pleased with the effort and execution showed by the Trojans.

Even with a 10-0 victory, Coach Hinzmann had his players out practicing after the game. He knows that the next game will not be an easy one and his players need to stay focused.

Red Oak ends their season with a (3-25) record. The Trojans are now (22-15) and will play Shenandoah at home on Saturday July 8th.
