Evan Mobley has 17 points to lift Southern Cal past Drake

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Evan Mobley had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 6 seed Southern California to a 72-56 victory over Drake in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Mobley made 7 of 15 field goals and blocked three shots. Isaiah Mobley scored 15 points and Drew Peterson added 14 for USC.

The Trojans will play No. 3 seed Kansas in the second round. Joseph Yesufu scored 26 points for Drake. None of his teammates scored more than six. Drake shot 29%, including a dismal 19% in the second half.

 

Hawkeyes lock up 1st title since 2010 at NCAA wrestling meet

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Iowa clinched its first national team title since 2010 following the medal round of the NCAA wrestling championships. The Hawkeyes had 125 points entering the evening finals. Penn State had won four straight titles and eight of the last nine and is second with 97.5 points. Oklahoma State is third with 95.5. The Hawkeyes secured their 24th national team title.

They have three wrestlers in the finals. Penn State has four finalists and Oklahoma State has two.

 

Iowa COVID-19 update for 3/20/21: No new deaths; 486 additional cases

The Iowa Department of Public Health’s Coronavirus dashboard, today (10-a.m., Saturday), shows 486 additional positive test results for COVID returned from the labs, for a total of 373,372, and zero additional deaths. The pandemic death total stands at 5,672. Long-Term Care facility deaths account for 2,225 of the total number of deaths across the state.

Iowa continues to report no Long-Term Care (LTC) facility COVID-19 outbreaks. Hospitalization data show: 172 Iowans are hospitalized with COVID (compared to 189 on Friday); 38 are in an ICU (compared to 44 Friday); 27 people were admitted to a hospital across the state (compared to 45 Friday), and 20 patients are on a ventilator.

RMCC Region 4 hospitals (those in western/southwest Iowa) show: those hospitalized with COVID are at 14; 8 people are in an ICU; one person was admitted, and five people remain are on a ventilator.The 14-day and seven-day positivity rates remain unchanged at 3.9% each.

The State reports nearly 1.22-million vaccines have been administered, with nearly 1.17-million of the shots given to Iowans. Those persons who have received a required two doses of the vaccine, amount to 435,843.

MARLIN R. ACKERMAN, 85, of Council Bluffs, died Tue., March 16th. Funeral services for MARLIN ACKERMAN will be held 11-a.m. Friday, March 26th, at the Roeder Mortuary, in Omaha.

MARLIN ACKERMAN is survived by:

Sons – John (Amy) Ackeman; and Mark (Amy Sanderhoff) Ackerman.

His daughter – Kara (Ed) Soo.

His brothers – Larry Ackerman, and David Ackerman.

His sister – Sheryl Kehm.

ELAINE MAGDELINE WENDT, 87, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, March 18th, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. A Private family Mass of Christian Burial for ELAINE WENDT will be held 11-a.m. Monday, March 22nd, at St. Mary Our Lady Fatima Church. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, March 21st, from2-until 8-p.m.

Burial is in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Portsmouth.

ELAINE MAGDELINE WENDT is survived by:

Her sons – John (Mary Ann) Wendt, of Panama, and Larry (Jeana) Wendt, of Ceresco, NE

Her daughters – Peg (Bob) Barta, & Bev (Rich) Priestly, all of Salado, TX; and Traci (Trent) Schuning, of Portsmouth

Her sisters – Agnes (Paul) Schulte, of Carroll; Gemma Finken, of Olathe, KS; Shirley (Bob) Hanson, of Omaha. and Mary Maddox, of Harlan.

Her brothers – Ray (Judy) Thielen, of Elkhorn, NE., and Charles (Lydia) Thielen, of Lincon, NE.

6 arrested in Montgomery County, Friday

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports three people were arrested Friday:

  • 28-year-old Amanda Marie Borgmyer, was arrested on a valid warrant for Harassment 3rd Degree. Borgmyer was booked into corrections and was released on $300 cash bond.
  • 28-year-old Nathanial Allen Dishong, of Red Oak, was arrested on a valid warrant for Burglary 3rd Degree, Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree and Theft 4th Degree. Dishong was booked into corrections on $500 cash bond.
  • And, 24-year old Kyle Andrew Nicholson, of Red Oak, was arrested Friday on a valid warrant for Assault with Bodily Injury. Nicholson was booked into corrections and was held without bond.

Red Oak Police report three arrests, also:

  • 30-year-old Chloe Marguirete Coburn was arrested at around 5:40 p.m., Friday. She was charged with domestic abuse assault — 1st offense. Coburn was transported to the Montgomery County Jail. She is being held without bond.
  • And, an altercation in Red Oak led to two arrests Friday morning. Authorities say 19-year-old Chad Stanley Padilla and 23-year-old Steven Cody Esquivel, both of Red Oak, were arrested for disorderly conduct in connection with an incident at the Oak Creek Apartments. Officers were called to the location shortly before 8:40 a.m. on a report that two males were fighting in the apartment’s courtyard. Police say both suspects were engaged upon officers’ arrival, with one male restraining the other. The suspects were then separated, and taken into custody. The men were released on $300 bond, each.
