Suspect in death of woman in Ames arrested in Des Moines

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A man is now in custody and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a woman in Ames in February. KCCI-TV reported Sunday that police in Des Moines arrested Richard Fleck after he allegedly assaulted a woman.

Fleck had been sought for several weeks following the death of Ranea Bell. She was found dead in an apartment in February.

MARILYN EHRSAM, 92, of Greenfield, died May 29, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle. A brief, public Memorial Service for MARILYN EHRSAM will be held 11-a.m. May 29th in the Greenfield Cemetery. (In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle) Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

A light lunch will be served at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, following the memorial service.

Memorials may be directed to the E.E. Warren Opera House in Greenfield or to the Greenfield Public Library.

Her daughters – Ann McGowan, of Johnston; Patricia (Richard) Hogan, of Marion and Sue Rohner, of Greenfield.

Her son – James (Daveane) Ehrsam, of Greenfield.

Her sisters – Norma Donnellan, of Greenfield, and Eleanor Bricker, of Waukee.

Her brother – Hans Johnson, of Broken Arrow, OK.

7 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.

2 from Texas arrested on warrants Friday evening in Ringgold County

The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department reports a man and woman from Texas were arrested on warrants Friday evening. Authorities received a report at around 5:10-p.m. about a suspicious vehicle near the ATM at City State Bank, in Mount Ayr. The vehicle was located a short time later and was observed turning south onto County Highway P46. A traffic stop was initiated at 5:45 P.M. for defective equipment, a mile and a half south of Mount Ayr.

During the traffic stop K9 “Heky” was deployed and alerted to the vehicle. A woman in the vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Julie Torres, of San Antonio, Texas. Torres had an active Felony arrest warrant for Failure to Appear on Drug Charges issued in Texas. She was taken into custody. During a pat down search drug paraphernalia and a small baggie of a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine was found. She was subsequently charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine.

A man in the vehicle initially provided false information regarding his identity. Upon further investigation he was identified as 34-year-old Jacob John Kennedy, of Kerrville, Texas. Kennedy had an active arrest warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon- Family Violence issued in Texas. He was taken into custody, and faces additional charges including Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Providing False ID, and having no valid driver’s license.

Both subjects were transported to the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office and held without bond.

Decatur County man arrested on warrants in Montgomery County

An incident at around 9:30-p.m. Saturday, on U Avenue in Villisca, resulted in the arrest on warrants, of a man from southern Iowa. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports Juan Esquivel, Jr., of Leon, was taken into custody on active warrants out of Decatur County, for Failure to Appear on charges of: Domestic Abuse/1st offense; Burglary in the 1st Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree.

Esquival was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held without bond.

Sac-Crawford-Carroll-Greene-Audubon Counties: WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT TODAY FROM 9 AM TO 4 PM.

South winds at 25 to 35 mph will gust up to 45 mph this afternoon. .Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects.
Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

The strong winds will also contribute to erratic or uncontrollable fire behavior.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Struck, defense lead Missouri State to 13-6 win over N. Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Matt Struck was 19-of-25 passing for 174 yards and the game’s only touchdown to help Missouri State beat Northern Iowa 13-6. Struck threw a 3-yard TD pass to Carson Buddemeyer to open the scoring with four minutes left in the first quarter and Missouri State (3-4, 3-1 Missouri Valley Conference) led the rest of the way.

Northern Iowa (2-3, 2-3), which went into the game ranked No. 10 in the STATS FCS poll, had won its last to matchups with the Bears by a combined score of 59-0. Redshirt freshman Justin Fomby was 18-of-29 passing for 215 yards with an interception for Northern Iowa. He started in place of Will McElvain, who missed to game due to issues surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Sharp-shooting Iowa gets 24 from Garza to beat Grand Canyon

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Iowa got 24 points from Luka Garza to move into the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an 86-74 victory over Grand Canyon. The second-seeded Hawkeyes avoided the early upset that sent high seeds Ohio State, Purdue and Tennessee home on a wild opening first day of the tournament.

Iowa shot 54% from the field and went 10 of 22 from behind the arc. Joe Wieskamp added 16 points to help lead the Hawkeyes into the next round They will play Oregon, which advanced after Virginia Commonwealth bowed out of the bracket due to a positive COVID-19 test.

 

Ex-Sioux City councilman admits to storing hazardous waste

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former Sioux City councilman has pleaded guilty to illegally storing and transporting several tons of toxic leaded glass processed by his now-closed recycling company. The Sioux City Journal reports that Aaron Rochester entered his plea Friday in U.S. District Court in Sioux City to unlawful storage of hazardous waste and unlawful transportation of hazardous waste. He faces up to five years in prison on each charge. No sentencing date has been set.

 

Meis, Carr lead Drake over Valparaiso 17-6

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Caden Meis ran 15 times for 98 yards and a touchdown, Declan Carr made two interceptions and Drake beat Valparaiso 17-6. Cross Robinson added 57 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Bulldogs, who outrushed Valparaiso 164-81.

Meis carried it on all three plays of a 63-yard drive capped by his 42-yard TD run in the first quarter that made it 7-3 for Drake. Ollie Reese caught six passes for 86 yards for Valpo.
