Interstate and Local Roadway Closures Coming to the I-29/I-480/West Broadway Interchange Area

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — April 2, 2021 – Council Bluffs residents and interstate travelers will soon notice construction activities beginning near the Interstate 29/I-480/West Broadway System Interchange. There will be planned, temporary, overnight and long-term closures occurring throughout next week. Closures will be occurring on the interstate and local roadways. Detours will be provided. All dates and events may change due to weather and field conditions.

Long-Term Closures Through Late 2021

  • On Monday, April 5, 37th Street, between 2nd and 9th avenues will be closing at 6 a.m. Nearby residents and local traffic should plan ahead and utilize an alternate route. Access will be maintained at Dodge Riverside Drive and 2nd Avenue. Access will re-open later this year once the new frontage road system has been constructed.
  • On Wednesday, April 7, the contractor anticipates closing Service Road B, between 9th and 2nd avenues at 6 a.m. Nearby residents and local traffic should plan ahead and utilize an alternate route. Access will be maintained at 35th Street. Access will re-open later this year once the new frontage road system has been constructed.

Temporary, Overnight Closures

  • Beginning Sunday night, April 4, I-29 southbound will be closed between 16th St. and 25th St. from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

 

 

On Monday evening, April 5, there will be temporary closures at the I-29 southbound ramps onto 9th Avenue and Nebraska Avenue between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

On Tuesday, April 6, and Wednesday, April 7, Nebraska Avenue will be closed between the interstate ramps from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

MARVIN HOPF, 75, of Orient, died Friday, April 2nd, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  Funeral services for MARVIN HOPF will be held 11-a.m. Wednesday, April 7th, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Open Visitation:  Will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Family Visitation:  Will be held on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial in the Greenfield Cemetery.  Memorials:  To the Marvin Hopf memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

MARVIN HOPF is survived by:

His wife – Evelyn Hopf, of Orient.

His daughter – Denise (Aaron) Ackerlund, of Madrid.

5 grandchildren, his daughter-in-law, Crystal Hopf of Stanton;  other relatives and friends.

Audubon County Sheriff’s report (4/2/21)

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office reports four arrests:
  • On March 27th, 38-year-old Tina Humlicek, of Exira, was arrested on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. She appeared before the magistrate the next morning and was released. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on March 25th.   32-year-old James Humlicek, of Exira, was also arrested on March 27th on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault- 2nd offense. He appeared before the magistrate the next morning and was released. His charge stems from an incident that occurred on March 27th.
  • On March 28th, 18-year-old Javyn Bladt, of Audubon, was arrested on a charge of Operating While Intoxicated-1st offense. He was released on his own recognizance and appeared before the magistrate at a later date. The charge stems from a traffic stop in the area of Lark Avenue and 220th Street.
  • And, on March 30th, 28-year-old Schyler Knudsen, of Coon Rapids, was arrested n a charge of Operating While Intoxicated-1st offense. He was released on his own recognizance and will appear before the magistrate at a later date. The charge stems from a traffic stop in the 2600 block of 190th Street.

Gov. Reynolds signs new Public Health Disaster proclamation

DES MOINES – On Friday (today), Gov. Reynolds signed a new Public Health Disaster proclamation that extends critical regulatory relief for an additional 30 days to those on the frontlines of COVID19 recovery.  The proclamation continues to strongly encourage Iowans, businesses, and organizations to take reasonable public health measures consistent with guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The proclamation also continues to extend the waiver on transportation restrictions for overweight loads.

State to start testing wells for ‘forever chemicals’ this summer

(Radio Iowa) – The Iowa D-N-R plans to test dozens of sites across the state for substances known as “forever chemicals,” which have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and fertility issues. The class of harmful compounds known as PFAS has been widely use in consumer goods for many years. D-N-R environmental specialist Matt Graesch says they’ll start testing the water at 53 sites in July.

“Can we come up with a relatively simple way of figuring out which wells we need to sample first to collect enough data to guide future efforts rather than blanket sampling every well,” Graesch says. “We weren’t sure what we were going to find.” The department has identified more than 100 wells in the state that are near facilities where PFAS is known or thought to be used.

“I drew a half a mile buffer around each of the PFAS locations and ran a query to figure out which of the active, highly susceptible public water supply wells were within a half a mile.” The chemicals have been used in industrial settings for decades, and in consumer goods from cookware to clothing to carpet. Officials are increasingly detecting contamination in soil and water across the country, raising concerns about long-term exposure.

Iowa 39 from U.S. 59 to Avenue C in Denison to close Friday, April 9

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – April 2, 2021 – A pavement resurfacing project on Iowa 39 from U.S. 59 to Avenue C in Denison will require closing the roadway to traffic beginning Friday, April 9, until Monday, April 26, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 3 Office.

During this project, motorists will be detoured around the work zone by using U.S. 59, Arrowhead Road, and Avenue C. The Iowa 39 detour will start on Friday, April 9, to complete milling work. The detour will then be removed for the weekend and then put back in place on Monday, April 12 so crews can complete the widening part of the project. Once this is completed, the detour will be removed once again.

On Monday, April 26, a detour will be back in place so crews can complete the work between U.S. 59 and C Avenue.

Ashley Joens named USBWA Third-Team All-American

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State women’s basketball junior Ashley Joens earned third-team All-America honors by the US Basketball Writer’s Association on Friday.

Joens‘ had a spectacular season for the Cyclones as she made her mark on the Cyclone single-season record book. Joens set a new school record of 24.2 points per game, topping Carleton’s previous mark of 21.7 points per game in 2018-19. Joens also finished the season second in points scored (678), tied for seventh in rebounding average (9.5), fourth in free-throw percentage (.883), third in free-throws made (181), sixth in free throws attempted (205), fourth in field goals made (223), third in field goals attempted (482).

Joens‘ 24.2 points per game, led the Big 12 conference and ranked fifth nationally. Her 46.3 percent from the field was also a career best. Joens also finishes the season as the NCAA leader in free throws made with 181.

Joens was honored as a Second-Team All-American by Sports Illustrated and received honorable mention honors by the Associated Press. She is also a Top-5 Finalist for the Cheryl Miller award, which honors the nation’s best small forward.

Joens is the third Cyclone to receive USBWA All-America honors, with Bridget Carleton earning a spot on the third-team in 2019 and Angie Welle making the team in 2001.

INDIANAPOLIS – National Player of the Year Luka Garza of the University of Iowa has been selected as the 2021 Senior CLASS Award winner in NCAA Division I men’s basketball.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men’s basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in men’s basketball.

Garza is the third student-athlete from Iowa to win the Senior CLASS Award: Megan Gustafson (2019) and Samantha Logic (2015).

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

“The University of Iowa has prepared me for the real world both on and off the court,” said Garza. “I am forever grateful to the countless teachers, advisors, tutors, and classmates that have helped me balance the life of a Division I student-athlete with the rigorous curriculum in the Tippie College of Business. I will use all the knowledge that I accumulated at the University of Iowa to help me in my future endeavors.”
