The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce hopes you’ll lend a hand and help make the City RAGBRAI ready, beginning 9-a.m. Saturday, July 6th. Starting at the Atlantic City Park, individuals will walk the route through town picking up trash, spraying and pulling weeds, sweeping off road shoulders, etc.

Trash bags, trimmers, Roundup, shovels, rakes, etc. will be needed. Participating people/businesses that donate product and/or their time will be mentioned on Around Atlantic, Atlantic RAGBRAI and Atlantic Chamber Facebook pages.

RAGBRAI (The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa), begins Sunday, July 21st in Council Bluffs. The riders and their entourage will stay overnight in Atlantic before departing the next day on their way to Winterset.

Cass County Democratic Party Chair Sherry Toelle said Monday, Democrat Senior Senator and Presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota will be at The Venue (307 Walnut in Atlantic) on Monday, July 1, from noon until 1-p.m., for a Cass County Meet & Greet.

The Cass County Democratic Party will provide a lunch for $10, starting at 11-a.m. that day. Proceeds go to the county party.

Senator Klobuchar is serving her third term in the US Senate after having served as the Hennepin County Attorney for seven years. Her primary policy issues include infrastructure, dealing with the opioid crisis, health and mental health issues, dealing with the climate change crisis, and making America a stronger democracy.

As of June 24th, Klobuchar was among a field of 25 Democrats who have either entered the 2020 for President, or who have formed a presidential exploratory committee.

Sheriff’s Deputies in Page County, Monday, arrested 46-year old Kyle Lee Woldruff. The rural Clarinda man was taken into custody at the Page County Courthouse, on a Page County Warrant for Failure to appear.

He was transported to the Page County Jail and held on a $100 cash bond.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, that the use of seat belts and airbag deployment prevent serious injuries during a collision Sunday evening, south of Stanton. Authorities were notified at around 5:25-p.m. about a two-vehicle accident near 240th Street and O Avenue.

When Deputies arrived, they determined a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by a juvenile female, was turning around on the road on the backside of a hill near the intersection. A northbound 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by 96-year old Alice Erickson, of Essex, crested the hill and struck the SUV.

Erickson and a female passenger in her vehicle, suffered minor injuries, and were transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital  by private vehicle. Damage from the collision amounted to $8,000. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Stanton Fire and Rescue along with Red Oak Fire and Rescue.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake University says it is selling or leasing more than four acres of land on the east edge of its Des Moines campus to a developer for construction of apartments, townhomes, commercial space and a parking garage.

Drake President Marty Martin said Monday the proposed development valued at more than $63 million will create a “walkable, vibrant hub of retail and restaurant options” for the private university located northwest of city’s central business district.
Cedar Falls-based Merge Urban Development Group will get federal tax incentives for developing in the federally designated Qualified Opportunity Zone, a program for improving low-income areas.

The new announcement follows a new Hilton hotel and restaurant already under construction in the area and a planned $8 million new Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement, a center named after former Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin.

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office today (Monday), issued a report on MAY arrests. Authorities say 22-year old Jennifer Woolsey, of Coon Rapids, was arrested May 2nd, for Operating (a vehicle) While Intoxicated. She was released later that afternoon after an appearance before the Magistrate.

On May 3rd, 27-year old Mackenzie Belnap, of Audubon, was arrested on Domestic abuse assault charges, along with two counts of Child Endangerment. He was released later that afternoon, following an appearance before the magistrate.

25-year old Brittany Rudolph, of Audubon was arrested May 5th for OWI/1st offense. She was later released on her own recognizance.

On May 9th, 29-year old Joseph White, of Exira was arrested for False Imprisonment. He was released the following day after appearing before the Magistrate. White was arrested again May 13th,for Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication. He was released later that day following an appearance before the magistrate.

On May 16th, 29-year old Blake Johannes, of Audubon was arrested for 1st degree Harassment. He was released the same evening after posting bond. On May 21st, 51-year old Michael Hass, of Kimballton, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. He was released the following morning after appearing before the magistrate.

On May 29th, 30-year old Mark Holland, of Audubon, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- marijuana. He was released after posting bond. 49-year old Vicente Gomez, of San Antonio, Texas was charged with Electronic Contraband in a Correctional Facility. Gomez was already in the Audubon County Jail on unrelated charges. He is still currently being held in the Audubon County Jail.

And, 20-year old Jacob Soll, of Kimballton, was arrested May 30th, for Violation of Probation. He was later released after posting bond.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Creston Police Department are continueing to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding a June 19th shooting and subsequent death.

On June 19th, 2019, at 2:05 a.m., Creston Police officers responded to a report of shots fired at 2304 N. Pine Street. Inside the home, officers found 44-year old Christy Hribal suffering from a gunshot wound. Hribal, who was visiting the home, was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital, where she later died.

36-year old Creston resident Charles Keeton was arrested at the scene and charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm. No criminal charges have been filed for the death of Christy Hribal.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A court challenge to a 2017 law that changes voting in Iowa has begun before a judge. The nonjury trial that began Monday in Polk County District Court is focused on portions of the law that require a voter to show an ID at the polls before voting, require an ID number on absentee ballots and allow election officials to throw out absentee ballots if election workers were to decide the voter’s signature doesn’t match those on file.

The lawsuit filed by the League of United Latin American Citizens, a civil rights group, says the law — passed with only Republican votes in May 2017 — makes it too hard for some people to vote. The group wants the judge to permanently bar the state from enforcing the law. The Iowa Supreme Court temporarily forbade the state from implementing the absentee ballot provisions, pending a trial on the lawsuit.

The Wallace Foundation and ISU Research and Demonstration Farms will hold a Field Day July 18th, from 9-a.m. until 1-p.m., at the ISU Research Farm near Lewis. The field day will feature the latest information on crop production and crop management practices.This is a free field day and is open to the public. CCA credits will apply to those in attendance.

This year’s program will begin with an informal gathering at 9:00 with Dr. Daniel Robison, ISU Dean of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Guest speakers will begin at 10:00. Dr. Erin Hodgson, Associate Professor, ISU Entomology, will discuss soybeans insects and soybean gall midge. Dr. Chad Hart, Associate Professor, Grain Markets Specialist, will give his best understanding of today’s markets and how to help incorporate them into your grain marketing plan. Dr. Lie Tang, Associate Professor Agricultural Engineering, will present on the Global status of robotic weeding. Free lunch will be served at 12:00. Weather permitting, a tour of a gall midge test plot will take place following lunch.
