(Update) 2 injured in Montgomery County collision, Thursday afternoon

News

April 16th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports two women were injured during a near head-on collision that occurred at around 3:45-p.m. Thursday, at the intersection of Highway 71 and 110th Street. Authorities say Debra Bender was driving a 2012 Chrysler 200 northbound on Highway 71 in the slow lane, while a non-contact vehicle was making a left turn onto westbound 110th Street. A 2000 GMC 1500 pickup driven by Gary Johnson, of rural Villisca, began to turn left (east). When Johnson failed to see Bender’s car in time, the right front side of his pickup struck the right front side of the Chrysler.

Debra Bender and her passenger were transported to the hospital. The passenger was subsequently transported by helicopter to the UNMC in Omaha. Authorities say Gary Johnson was not injured in the crash. No citations were issued. Both vehicles were declared a total loss. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by personnel from the Grant, Griswold and Villisca Fire and Rescue Departments.

Atlantic got four top ten individual finishes to grab the team title at Fox Run. Drey Newell led the way with a round of 80 for 3rd Place. Lane Nelson was 4th with an 80 as well, Braden Smith 5th with an 82, and Garrett McLaren was 8th with an 87.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Our goal today was to shoot a better team score than we did at Shenandoah Tournament. Great to see our boys come through today. I challenged them to a score between 320 and 330. Drey lead the way for the team. Had some struggles to start but ended well with a 9 over round. Lane also played well today. Great to see him take 10 strokes off of Tuesday’s score. He had a good start with a birdie on his first hole. Braden continued to work on his game today. Not the front score he wanted but played really well on the back except for one hole. Garrett had some struggles at times today. A little higher score than he was hoping. Both Cruz and Roth had some putting issues at times. The greens were fast and hard. However both worked to keep the score down as much as possible. This was a great win for us. Need to take this play into next week.”
