A fresh start for an old face, Exira-EHK Football is ready to compete in the fall

Sports

July 31st, 2023 by Asa Lucas

(Exira) — The 2022 season felt disappointing to the Spartan football program. They had a (4-4) record and ended the season on a respectable win of 51-14 against Coon Rapids-Bayard.  Even with a large win to cap off the season and staying at .500, Spartan alumni and now Head Coach Drew Buckholdt expected more from his team last year. He felt the team had more talent and didn’t play to their full potential.

Now with his inaugural season underway as Head Coach. Coach Buckholdt has the Spartans in the weight room all offseason becoming stronger and using a point system. This point system helps the players learn accountability and the importance of being committed to the program.

Three players from Exira-EHK stand out for their progress in the weight room and leadership off the field. Senior, Jameson Kilworth who emerged from the defense with 22.5 total tackles, 14 solo tackles, and 4 tackles for a loss. Junior, Alex Hansen was a key part of the Spartans rushing game with 20 carries, 110 yards, and 2 touchdowns. In the interior, offensive lineman Josh Nelson has dramatically increased his numbers in the weight room.

An identity has already been formed in the offseason. Coach Buckholdt wants his team to be the one that competes day in and day out. Then they will leave everything out on the field and see what happens.

Exira-EHK starts their season on the road against the Ar-We-Va Rockets, August 25th.

Honesty is the best policy when kids get physical exams

News, Sports

July 31st, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa students head back to school in a few weeks and as student-athletes take their physicals, they’re reminded it’s vital to be honest with their doctors about any troubles they’re having. Andrea Winters, a physician assistant in pediatric cardiology with the Gundersen Health System, says last week’s incident where the 18-year-old son of N-B-A star Lebron James was struck by cardiac arrest during basketball practice at U-S-C shows the critical importance of regular physicals.

Winters says Bronny James’ life was likely saved by the fast response, and he was released from the hospital a few days afterward. She says Iowa parents need to discuss why it’s a smart move for everyone to get annual check-ups, not just student-athletes.

A child might be afraid to mention warning signs of a problem that could be life-threatening, but Winters says it’s crucial they tell the truth, as the cure could be relatively simple.

The problem could also be a heart issue, but it can’t be addressed if the doctors don’t know to look for it. Adults may know the signs of a heart problem, but kids may need to be educated as to what’s normal and what’s not.

It’s important for everyone to know hands-only C-P-R, Winters says, as well as to call 9-1-1 right away in an emergency. She also advocates putting the Pulse Point app on your phone which can direct you to the nearest A-E-D, or automatic external defibrilator. The Gundersen Health System includes a hospital in West Union, and clinics in Fayette, Decorah, Waukon, Lansing, Postville and Calmar.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa head gymnastics coach Larissa Libby has announced the elevation of Rachel David to assistant coach for the 2023-24 season. David has served as the volunteer assistant coach since 2020.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be officially welcoming Rachel to our staff,” said Head Coach Libby. “Rachel is an Iowa native and has been around this program in several capacities since she was in high school. Rachel has been with us for some of the most significant moments in our team’s history, and it feels good to be officially bringing her on board as an assistant coach.”

David was a part of the 2021 regular season Big Ten Championship staff and has helped the team to three straight NCAA regional appearances. Prior to being named the volunteer assistant, David was a student manager for the GymHawks from 2018-20.

A North Liberty, Iowa, native, David graduated from the University of Iowa in 2020 with a degree in sport and recreation management with a concentration in coaching and a minor in physical activity and exercise nutrition.
