Red Oak man arrested on an OWI charge

A traffic stop late Saturday morning in Montgomery County resulted in the arrest of 62-year-old Jon Marvin King, of Red Oak. He was taken into custody for OWI/1st offense at around 11:42-a.m., following a traffic stop on Highway 71 and 185th Street. King was released after posting a $1,000 bond.

Adair County to receive enough Pfizer vaccine for youth vaccinations

The Adair County Public Health Department was recently notified they will be receiving enough of the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19, to begin putting together a 12-year-old and older clinic for Nodaway Valley students before the end of the year.

Nurse Amy Devault says, “With the CDC changing mask requirements for vaccinated people, we feel it is even more important to offer this vaccine for those who want it.” The clinic will probably take place Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, during the last week of school, at both the Middle School and High School.

IKM-Manning Schools make mask usage optional

Administrators with the IKM-Manning School District have made a change to the district’s face mask policy, following new guidance issued Friday, by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Officials say “Starting immediately: mask usage is a personal choice for all students, staff and community members at all school events and during the school day including transportation. Students exposed to a positive case of COVID 19 will no longer be required to quarantine. Only the positive individual will be required to be in isolation.”

IKM-Manning officials said also, “With the issuance of this guidance, we will no longer have a mask mandate at school. We will, however, continue to fully support all staff, students and community members who elect to continue the use of facial coverings. Our goal is for school to be a safe and supportive place for all individuals.”

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has a new “tip line”

Montgomery County Sheriff Jon D. Spunaugle reports the Sheriff’s  Office has implemented an anonymous website tip line. Sheriff Spunaugle says “Even the most insignificant bit of information can sometimes be what we need to solve a case or crime. It will remain confidential, and all tips come directly to me. If you have information to share about a crime or suspicious activity please visit the Montgomery County Iowa website” (https://montgomerycountyia.gov/)

1 dead, 3 injured in a crash Saturday morning in Crawford County

A collision between two cars Saturday has claimed one life and resulted in injuries to three others. The accident happened in Crawford County, at around 7:30-a.m.  The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by 30-year-old Theresa Mae Denery, of Cherokee, was traveling north on Highway 59, south of 25th Avenue, when it crossed the center line of the road and struck a southbound 2018 Toyota Camry, head-on.

Denery died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, 39-year-old Corina Campa, and her passengers, 21-year-old Esmeralda Luna and 7-year-old Ashia Campa, all of Denison, were injured. All three victims were flown by LifeNet helicopter to the UNMC in Omaha.

All of the crash victims were wearing their seat belts. The accident remains under investigation.

No injuries following a collision in Red Oak

Police in Red Oak say no injuries were reported following a collision that took place at around 8:35-p.m., Friday. An investigation determined 23-year-old Kaley Ann Cok, of Shenandoah, was driving a 2011 Ford Fusion west on Oak Street, and was at the intersection with Broadway, attempting to turn left to southbound Broadway. As she turned, her car struck a 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup traveling straight ahead, eastbound on Oak Street. The pickup was occupied by the driver, 15-year-old Guadalupe Angel Bowen, of Omaha, and her passenger, 34-year-old Dale Demont.

Bowen and Demont said they were coming through the intersection, and the Ford was stopped, appearing to yield to them, when the car began to turn into their path. A motorist traveling behind the pickup confirmed the accident description. Police cited Cok for Failure to Yield upon making a left turn. Both vehicle were able to be driven away from the scene. Damage from the collision amounted to $4,300 altogether, with the Fusion sustaining a majority of the damage.

Iowa COVID-19 update for 5/15/21: 1 additional death; 242 additional cases; 7 day positivity rate below 3%

The Iowa Department of Public Health today (Saturday) reports 242 new positive COVID-19 tests and one additional death. The health department reported 399,316 total positive tests, and 5,998 total deaths since the pandemic began. State data show more than 2.56-million vaccinations have been given in Iowa, and nearly 1.24-million vaccination series are completed.

Iowa’s COVID-19 positivity rates continue to mostly decline. In the last 24 hours, the 14-day average dropped from 3.4% to 3.3% and the 7-day average dropped from 3.0% to 2.9%. COVID-19 hospitalizations are down, from 151 on Friday to 147 on Saturday. There are 42 patients in ICU, 23 were admitted, and 19 patients are on ventilators. In RMCC Region 4 (hospitals in western & southwest Iowa), there are: Six patients hospitalized with COVID or symptoms of the virus; three people with COVID are in an ICU; No new admissions to area hospitals were reported, and no one was on a ventilator in the latest report.

There remains a single long-term care facility with a COVID-19 outbreak. The Risen Son Christian Village, in Pottawattamie County, reports 10 positive cases among residents and staff. There have been 2,335 deaths reported in Iowa’s care facilities.

Movie in the Park- The Secret Garden; “Stand Up Paddleboard” Demonstration

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a “Movie in the Park” Campground Program! Cass County Naturalist Lora Kanning says they will be showing “The Secret Garden”. The public program will be held at the Campground Shelter at Cold Springs Park in Lewis, on Friday May 28th 2021, beginning at 9:00 pm. There is no charge. In the movie, Mary Lennox , a young orphan, living with her domineering uncle stumbles upon a whimsical garden tucked away on the far reaches of the estate. Mary then experiences a series of fantastical adventures in her newfound playground. It’s based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Bring a blanket or chair, Dress for the weather. The movie may be rescheduled to a later date if it rains, and You DO NOT have to be a registered camper to attend the program.

And, the Cass County Conservation Board is holding “Stand Up Paddleboard” Demonstration. The public demonstration will be held on Saturday May 29th from 1 until 4 pm at the Cold Springs Park Beach. Again, there is no charge to participate. SUP is the fastest growing sport in the paddling community not only across the country, but especially right here in land-locked areas like Iowa. It’s fun, healthy as a total body work-out and offers a unique perspective when it comes to being on the water. After a quick demonstration try out the boards for yourself.

If you do not bring a life jacket, one will be provided to you. Children must be 16 years or older. Paddler must weigh LESS than 250 LBS. The Stand Up Paddleboard programs will be on the last Saturday of every month, Ending Labor Day Weekend on Saturday September 4th. Programs will be cancelled if there is unsafe weather conditions on the Lake.
