Drake women’s basketball coach Allison Pohlman says hopes are high as the Bulldogs prepare for a new season. Pohlman says the focus this summer has been to get better and not focused on what was accomplished last season.

Pohlman says the Bulldogs face another challenging nonconference schedule.

The Bulldogs won nine of their last 11 games last season to finish with a record of 22-10.

Lindsey Ubrun Returns as Assistant Coach

Sports

August 7th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Ames, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Jamie Pinkerton has named Lindsey Ubrun, who has served as the head coach of Wagner University for the past six seasons, as assistant coach for the Cyclones.

Ubrun returns to Ames after spending three seasons as an assistant coach in the Iowa State dugout (2014-16) under the direction of Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler. Also on that staff was current associate head coach Kate Sinnott who at the time was the director of operations.

Ubrun was initially hired at Iowa State to replace Coach Pinkerton, who had just left to start up the Montana softball program. She has over a decade of coaching experience to her name on top of being a former All-American at the University of Missouri.

“I am so excited to be back in Ames with the best athletic department, student-athletes and supporters anywhere in the country,” said Ubrun. “I can’t wait to get started and help build on what Coach Pinkerton, his staff and student-athletes have developed.”

For the last six years, Ubrun has been in charge of the Wagner softball program. Ubrun led the Seahawks to their most conference wins since 2007 in 2022, posting 12 victories over NEC opponents. Across her six years on Staten Island, Ubrun saw her team record multiple top 10 program hitting records.

With the Cyclones, Ubrun oversaw both hitting and infield instruction, as well as recruiting nationwide. In her first year in Ames, Ubrun’s instruction at the plate led ISU to its best statistical hitting season in school history. In 2014, Iowa State collectively hit .325 with 476 hits, both of which are still single-season records. It’s the only year in program history ISU has hit over .300. ISU has eight 400+ hit seasons and three of them came with Ubrun in the dugout.

“I’m excited to welcome back Lindsey and for our student-athletes to have an opportunity to interact with her, learn and be coached by her,” said coach Jamie Pinkerton. “She knows what it takes to be a successful student-athlete, to play at a high level and reach our sport’s pinnacle. Her experience coaching at Chattanooga, Florida Gulf Coast and Wagner will be invaluable to our staff and myself. Lindsey has helped each program grow in her time at those respective stops. We are looking forward to getting started soon!”

Lindsey Ubrun was an assistant coach for Florida Gulf Coast for two seasons (2017-18) where she led the Eagles both on the infield and at the plate. Both her 2017 and 2018 are littered through the record books as FGCU set multiple top 10 program hitting records during her time in Fort Myers.

Throughout her three seasons in Chattanooga, where she worked with outfielders and hitters, the Mocs were one of the top hitting teams in the country. In her first two seasons with Chattanooga, the Mocs hit over .340 in both seasons. In 2011, Chattanooga set school records in six offensive categories, including runs scored and total bases.

The Riverside, California, native began her coaching career at Chattanooga where she spent two years as a volunteer assistant coach before becoming a full-time assistant after the 2012 season.

Ubrun began her collegiate career at Maryland before finishing her final two seasons in Columbia. She compiled a .313 average across her four years between the two schools, belting 48 homers and tallying 164 RBI. In her senior season with the Tigers, Ubrun helped to lead the Tigers to the 2009 Women’s College World Series. She graduated from Mizzou in 2010 with an education degree.

Audubon expecting growth with more experienced and deep roster

Sports

August 7th, 2023 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers football team is hoping some good depth can bring them back to their winning ways in 2023. The Wheelers played for a state championship in 2019, only suffered one loss in 2020, then went to the semifinals in 2021. From that success has come some big standards as you can imagine for Audubon football and that’s why they were disappointed with a 4-6 mark in 2022. Audubon head coach Sean Birks said that has made the team hungry this offseason.

Audubon had quite a bit of youth on the field last season. Coach Birks said the added experience from last season should pay off, starting with the quarterback Aaron Olsen.

Olsen threw for 641 yards and 8 touchdowns with 7 interceptions last season, while running for 1,159 yards and 23 scores. Coach Birks is excited about the talent that will surround him this season.

Coach Birks said the mental side of the game is where he expects a lot of growth for his squad.

The Wheelers open up at home against a familiar rival in the CAM Cougars on August 25th.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell on the Cyclone freshmen

Sports

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says several true freshmen are battling for playing time as the Cyclones get ready for the season. Campbell says over the past few years the trend has been for incoming freshmen to be more game ready.

Campbell has been impressed with the newcomers.

Campbell says a strong freshman class helps provide depth.

The Cyclones open the season at home on September second against UNI.

Iowa State senior Jarod Hufford previews the season

Sports

August 7th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State offensive lineman Jarrod Hufford says the Cyclones are motivated by the failures of last season. The Cyclones finished 4-8 in 2022 and six of the losses were by a touchdown or less. The redshirt senior from Ohio started all 12 games last season.

The question mark at quarterback has not hurt his confidence. Hunter Dekkers is not at fall camp after being charged in a gambling investigation and several candidates are competing for the job.

He says the offensive line is focused on improvement no matter who the starting quarterback is.

Hufford’s versatility is a strength. He has started games at left tackle and left guard.

The Cyclones open the season at home on September second against Northern Iowa.

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico — Three University of Iowa track and field athletes represented the United States at the Pan American U20 Championships on August 4-6.

Mike Stein was crowned champion on Sunday in the men’s javelin throw with a 71.38-meter (234’ 2”). Stein took the lead from the jump with all of his throws being farther than the silver medalist’s farthest throw.

On Friday morning, Wisdom Williams finished second in the women’s shot put with a 15.14-meter (49’ 8.25) throw. Will Ryan came back in the evening on Friday, finishing third — good for bronze in the 5,000-meter race (14:52.06).

The freshmen trio of Will Ryan (5,000-meters), Mike Stein (javelin) and Wisdom Williams (shot put) qualified for the Pan American Championships at the USATF U20 National Championships in Eugene, Oregon, last month.
