Jason McCall has spent the past the past five years as an assistant coach for the AHSTW boys basketball team and now he is going to take over the head coaching role for the girls team. The AHSTW school board approved McCall’s hiring at their meeting on Wednesday night and McCall said hes anxious to meet with the girls and get to work. He felt like this was a great opportunity.
McCall is a Clarinda native that went on to school at Iowa State and then came into the AHSTW school district as a physical education teacher. He started as a volunteer coach for a few sports and then latched on with GG Harris’ staff for boys hoops. He said being around the success the Vikings have had and learning from his colleagues made him feel prepared for this next step.
McCall takes over for Jill Vanderhoof who left the district for another position. The Lady Vikes are coming off a nine win season last year but return a good number of players including four starters for the upcoming campaign. Coach McCall said he wants the team to put an emphasis on effort.
He said they have some good competition scheduled for shootouts this summer and he’s looking forward to working with the team. Listen to the full interview with Coach McCall below.
