Drake’s players got Sunday off to recover from their three-overtime win against Wichita State Saturday, but after two days of practice, they’re back at it tonight (Wednesday) on the road at Indiana State. Coach Mark Phelps feels the win over the Shockers was part of the team’s growth. “I sense a maturity and a greater discipline from our team, and a steady hunger. They are certainly excited about the win, but feel is we play the right way, we can win more games,” Phelps says. He says the understanding of how they need to play should help them avoid a letdown after the big win. “I’ve said this all along, we have enough that if we play the right way with great energy and we defend to our best ability, we can beat anybody. At the same time, we’re not talented that if we don’t play that way we can lose any game we play,” Phelps explains. “So I think they have that mindset.” He says getting a win at Indiana State will require their best effort. He says they are the defending tournament champions and it is a challenge to go on the road. “It’s gonna be a battle, and we have to play with great energy and we have to defend, and it’s just gonna be I’m sure, a hard fought and intense game from both teams,” Phelps says. Drake is 13-9 overall and tied for third at 6-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State is 13-9 and 4-7 in the conference. Game time is seven p-m.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated 20 incidents involving injured hunters in 2011, virtually unchanged from recent years, but there were no hunting-related deaths in 2011, down from a single fatality last year. Megan Wisecup, a DNR recreational safety program supervisor, says most of the hunting incidents happened during shotgun deer season when a hunter focused on a deer and not on what’s beyond their target. As a result, she says people get shot. Several injuries happened without shooting at an animal. Wisecup says in one case a hunter was shot in the foot while reaching into his vehicle to unsnag a loaded gun from several bags he was carrying and the gun discharged. There were also eight reports of hunting incidents that caused property damage.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — If there’s been a knock on Iowa State star Royce White this season, it’s been his shooting stroke. White’s jumper looked pretty sweet on the 8-footer that sent the Cyclones to their second huge win in four days. White hit the game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds left as Iowa State rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat Kansas State 72-70 on Tuesday night. White finished with 22 points and Chris Allen had 15 for the Cyclones (16-6, 6-3 Big 12), who’ve won four of their last five — including thrilling back-to-back victories over league-leading Kansas and the Wildcats. Iowa State’s Chris Babb tied the game at 70 on a free throw with 49 seconds left. The Cyclones then corralled a loose ball after Babb missed his next one to gain possession with the shot clock off, and White drove to the baseline and floated in the deciding bucket.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Deon Mitchell scored 17 points and keyed a go-ahead rally late in the game as Northern Iowa defeated Southern Illinois 58-49 on Tuesday night. Chip Rank added 13 points, including two 3-pointers, as the Panthers (15-9, 5-7 Missouri Valley) snapped a two-game losing streak. Jeff Early’s 13 points led the Salukis (7-16, 4-8), who have lost five of their last six. Mamadou Seck had 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Mitchell’s 3-pointer put Northern Iowa ahead 41-39 with 6:44 left, giving the Panthers their first lead of the second half. That started a spurt in which Mitchell and Johnny Moran combined for the Panthers’ next 14 points, creating a 52-47 edge with 3:38 to go. Northern Iowa endured a scoreless streak of 6:56 in the first half and trailed 22-19 at the break. The Panthers have won seven of the teams’ last eight meetings.
Iowa gave up 103 points in its loss to Indiana on Sunday and coach Fran McCaffery says they continue to try and find a way to shore up the defense. “Not happy at all with how we’re playing, we’ve got to get better at the defensive end of the floor. We shuffled the lineup a little bit to see if that would help. I think it helped in some areas, maybe not so much in others, so I think we have a couple of important days of practice coming up,” McCaffery says. McCaffery says you can only do so much work in practice on defense.
He says you can work on all kinds of drills and try different combinations. “But ultimately it comes down to a matter of toughness, and we lack that right now, I don’t mind saying it, we don’t have the toughness that’s necessary to defend in this league,” McCaffery says. Iowa did score 89 points in the game. McCaffery was asked if he’d thought about giving up the fast-paced offense. “No, nothing’s changed my mind. I don’t mind being in a 103-89 game, I just don’t want to have 89,” McCaffery said. Iowa is now 11-11 overall on the season, and 3-6 in the Big Ten conference. Iowa hosts Minnesota on Wednesday.
Iowa State returns to action tonight against Kansas State looking to avoid a letdown after upsetting Kansas on Saturday. Cyclone coach, Fred Hoiberg, says they got a lot of great exposure from that win on national T-V. “You know our guys from start to finish against Kansas played as hard, with as much passion as we have all year. I’ve been so proud of our guys how they’ve come together, especially since the conference season started, and you have to in order to compete in this league, you have to compete with that type of energy every time you take the floor,” Hoiberg says. He said the recognition is great, but they have 10 more games to go in the season. Hoiberg says the game against the Wildcats will be physical.
He says K-State gets almost half of its shots back off the offensive rebounds. “We talked about it against Kansas, we did a great job of limiting them to five offensive rebounds, two second chance points. We’re going to have twice as good an effort against Kansas State in order to do that same thing,” Hoiberg said. Iowa State is 15-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12 conference and alone in fourth place. K-State is 15-5 and 4-4 in the conference, in fifth place. Tip off is eight p-m.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa is refusing to release records showing how its administration responded to a woman’s sexual assault claim against running back Marcus Coker. The school released nine pages of records on Monday that don’t shed any light on the situation involving Coker, who was suspended for last month’s Insight Bowl for unspecified misconduct and later left the football program. The school claimed all other documents in the case cannot be released because of a student privacy law. A woman who received medical treatment Oct. 28 told police Coker assaulted her hours earlier at his residence. Coker was not charged criminally after the woman refused to seek charges, but his suspension came after a university investigation. Coker played the final five games of the regular season before his suspension.
