NORMAN, Okla. — Melvin Ejim had 21 points to lead five Iowa State players scoring in double figures as the Cyclones beat Oklahoma 77-70 on Saturday.

 Iowa State (17-6, 7-3 Big 12) had 15 3-point baskets (in 30 attempts), one shy of tying a school record for makes.

 Andrew Fitzgerald scored 27 points for the Sooners (13-9, 3-7), who focused on shutting down ISU leading scorer Royce White. White finished with three points, taking his only field goal attempt with 1:38 remaining.

 Scott Christopherson added 15 points, Chris Babb 12, Chris Allen 11 and Tyrus McGee 10 for the Cyclones, who have won three in row.  The Cyclones next play at Oklahoma State on Tuesday, February 7th at 6:00pm.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State forward Chelsea Poppens simply took over the game. Poppens led a second-half comeback that lifted the Cyclones (13-8 overall, 4-6 Big 12) to a 71-56 win over Texas (13-9 overall, 3-7 Big 12) Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. Poppens’ inspired play included a career-high 27 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.

Poppens, saddled with three fouls, entered with 11:46 left in the game and the Cyclones ahead only 40-38. The junior scored on a layin when she got the ball to give Iowa State a 42-40 lead. A 31-16 run by the Cyclones to close the game included 18 points from Poppens.

Iowa State point guard Lauren Mansfield provided a career-high11 assists and just one turnover in 37 minutes of action. Hallie Christofferson was 5-of-8 from three-point range  for the Cyclones, to score 17 points. The sophomore is 14-of-25 (.560) from beyond the arc in the last five games.

Yvonne Anderson led Texas with 19 points in the game, including the Longhorns’ first 12 points of the contest. Texas’ Nneka Enemkpali was ejected from the game with 6:31 remaining on her second technical foul. Iowa State forced a season-high 23 turnovers.

Iowa State plays at Missouri Wednesday in a 7 p.m. CST game that will be televised by Mediacom.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Anthony James buried a 3 at the buzzer as Northern Iowa upset No. 13 Creighton 65-62 on Saturday, snapping the Bluejays’ 11-game winning streak.

James scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Seth Tuttle added 13 points for the Panthers, who handed visiting Creighton its first loss since late December.

James buried a huge 3 from the corner with 23 seconds left to put Northern Iowa (16-9, 6-7 MVC) ahead 61-56. Creighton’s Antoine Young hit a 3 with 4.6 seconds left to tie it at 62-all. But James dribbled the length of the court and pulled up for the game-winner at the buzzer, sending Panthers streaming onto their home court.

Young scored 23 points and Doug McDermott, who originally committed to Northern Iowa, had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Creighton (21-3, 11-2).

James’ stunning final shot was a fitting caper to this back-and-forth contest between these heated Valley rivals.

Northern Iowa opened up a 51-45 lead with 5:21 left. The Panthers reeled off an 11-2 run capped by a Deon Mitchell layup and a 3 from Chip Rank, and McDermott picked up his fourth foul on a charge near the basket.

Young stopped the UNI surge with a three-point play, pulling the Bluejays within a possession with 3:55 left, but Jake Koch’s 3 with 1:11 left gave the Panthers a 58-54 lead.

Creighton’s Jahenns Manigat made it 61-59 on a 3 with 15 seconds left. But James, who shot 6 of 14 from the floor, hit the one that mattered at the end.

Northern Iowa’s Johnny Moran buried a 3 and Rank scooped through heavy traffic, putting the Panthers ahead 39-34 with 14:40 left. They could’ve gone ahead by seven, which would have been the biggest lead yet for either team, but Young smartly stripped Matt Morrison at the rim.

Ethan Wragge’s rushed 3 and bank shot at the end of two sloppy possessions brought Creighton back even at 40-all. McDermott then tipped a loose ball to himself over four Panthers in the paint, converting a three-point play to give the Bluejays a 43-40 lead with 11:02 left.

The Panthers got 3s from five different players in the first half, including one from Rank with 1:03 left that helped them take a 31-30 halftime lead.

Northern Iowa rolled into Valley play with a realistic shot at yet another NCAA tournament berth after wins over Old Dominion, Providence, Iowa and Iowa State in nonconference play. But the Panthers had lost four of their last six, uncharacteristically struggled to knock down shots.

That probably wouldn’t have been an issue if McDermott had stuck around.

Panthers coach Ben Jacobson graciously let McDermott leave when his father Greg left Iowa State for Creighton before Greg’s freshman year.

No one could have imagined he would blossom into one of the nation’s best players – and Northern Iowa’s student section showed their bitterness by booing McDermott when he touched the ball.

McDermott was as good as ever, shooting 7 of 11 from the floor, but the Panthers hit 11 of their 21 tries from 3 – including James’s dramatic finale

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Matt Gatens scored 18 points as Iowa beat Penn State 77-64 on Saturday.

Bryce Cartwright and Aaron White each scored 17 for the Hawkeyes (13-11, 5-6 Big Ten), who won their second straight after losing five of their previous six games.

Tim Frazier scored 23 points to lead the Nittany Lions (10-13, 2-8), who have lost four straight and seven of their last eight.

Iowa led by as many as 26 points in the second half, but Penn State trimmed the deficit to 50-36 with 13 minutes left. The Hawkeyes held their ground, and that lead never shrunk below double digits.

Iowa opened with a 16-2 lead, and Penn State managed only three baskets in the first 14 minutes.

The Hawkeyes celebrated the 25th anniversary of their 1986-87 team, which won a school-record 30 games and reached the Elite Eight, with gold throwback jerseys and a pregame ceremony.
