Trojans Earn Hawkeye 10 Championship

Sports

February 11th, 2012 by admin

The Atlantic Boys Basketball team earned an outright Hawkeye 10 Conference Championship on Friday night with a 57-46 win on the road against Creston.  It is the first conference championship since 2002 for the Trojans and the 25th overall for the Atlantic Boys program.

Sam Markham lead the way in the victory with 19 points.  Harrison Hoegh and Dalton Franken chipped in with 16 apiece to help earn the win.  The Trojans used a combination of great defensive pressure and quick offensive attacks to wear down and frustrate the Panthers.

The Trojans improve to 17-3 overall and finish with a conference record of 11-2.  Atlantic will finish the regular season at home against Abraham Lincoln on Tuesday, February 14th before beginning postseason play at home versus Red Oak on February 20th.

Atlantic has also won boys conference titles in 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1977, 1980, 1981, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2002.

Ticket Sales Brisk for Iowa City Olympic Trials

Sports

February 10th, 2012 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Officials say that over 7,500 tickets have been sold for the April’s U.S. Olympic team wrestling trials in Iowa City.

USA Wrestling events director Pete Isais says ticket demand for the 2012 trials is the highest it’s ever been.

The trial will determine who’ll wrestle for the U.S. in the London Olympics in August. They’ll be held April 21 and 22 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Six former University of Iowa wrestlers are among the 175 athletes who’ve already qualified for the event.

Iowa’s Ferentz on Steady Ground Despite Turmoil

Sports

February 10th, 2012 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Two straight years of disappointing results, star running backs leaving the program and the loss of both coordinators would land many coaches on the hot seat.

Not Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz. He’s not going anywhere.

Ferentz is the Big Ten’s longest-tenured coach at 13 seasons and counting. He also has the unwavering support of athletic director Gary Barta despite the turmoil that has engulfed the program over the past 18 months.

Barta says Ferentz has run a program that’s extremely successful on the field and sports one of the highest graduation rates in the country. Barta also says Ferentz’s value system is shared by the people of Iowa.

Iowa Women Roll Past Minnesota Thursday Night

Sports

February 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Earlier this week when asked what her team needed to do to replace the game-night contributions of Jamie Printy, Samantha Logic suggested quietly that everyone else on the women’s basketball team at the University of Iowa needed to do just a little more than they would have before the Hawkeyes’ all-Big Ten guard was lost for the season. Thursday night on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the multi-talented freshman guard from Racine, Wis., did exactly that and a little more for good measure to lead Bluder’s Bunch to a convincing 75-58 victory over Minnesota in the Hawkeyes’ annual “Pink Game” in support of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Logic completed her night with 20 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Morgan Johnson led all scorers with 23 points. In addition to becoming the 32nd Hawkeye to score 1,000 points in their career, Iowa’s post player also had eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Kamille Wahlin added 19 points and five three-point baskets, and Kelly Krei added nine rebounds on Kelli Krei Bobblehead Night. The victory was Iowa’s fourth straight and second in a row since the loss of Printy. It pushed Iowa’s Big Ten Conference record to 7-5 and the team’s overall mark to 15-10. The Gophers fell to 4-8 in league play – a mark that includes a victory over league-leading and nationally ranked Ohio State – and 12-14 for the season.

Iowa returns to action Sunday when Bluder’s Bunch entertains Michigan State at 2 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Spartans carried a 6-4 Big Ten record and a 14-9 overall mark into their game against Northwestern Thursday in East Lansing, Mich.

Sports

February 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Northwestern took control early with a 16-2 run and rolled past the Iowa Hawkeyes 83-64 in Big Ten play, Thursday night.  The Hawkeyes turned the ball over 18 times and Northwestern connected on 13 three pointers in the game as the Hawks fall to 5-7 in the conference race.  Freshman Aaron White was one of the few bright spots during the game. He finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Iowa is off until a trip to Penn State next Thursday.

Iowa Football Tickets Up $2 in 2012

Sports

February 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Tickets for Iowa football games will go up $2 per game in 2012. Iowa athletic officials say the slight increase will push season tickets to $388 for next season’s seven-game home schedule.  Season ticket holders will have a chance to renew their tickets in early March, and single-game tickets will go on sale in late June if they’re available. Iowa is charging $70 per ticket for games against Iowa State and Nebraska.  The Hawkeyes are asking $60 for tickets for their game against Northern Iowa on Sept. 15. Iowa has sold out 54 of its last 56 games at Kinnick Stadium.
