CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Meyers Leonard had 22 points and 14 rebounds off the bench as Illinois defeated Iowa 65-54 on Sunday night to end a six-game losing streak. The Illini (17-12, 6-10 Big Ten) hadn’t won in February and had lost nine of 10 since defeating Ohio State in early January. Brandon Paul added 17 points and D.J. Richardson scored 12 for Illinois. Leonard had 15 points by halftime. Matt Gatens powered the Hawkeyes (15-14, 7-9) with 22 points and 5 of 6 shooting from 3-point range. But Gatens was held in check by Paul in the second half, scoring just five points. Illinois led 34-23 at the break and weathered a Hawkeye run that closed the gap to 38-34 early in the second half.

Cardinals giving Tyler Greene chance to win 2nd Base job

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak would like to see Tyler Greene take over for Skip Schumaker as the team’s regular second baseman. First-year manager Mike Matheny isn’t ready to commit to the switch. A first-round selection out of Georgia Tech in 2005, Greene has yet to earn consistent playing time in the major leagues. A shortstop most of his career, he has been asked to try third base and the outfield over the past couple of springs.

Second base is the only starting position up for grabs in Cardinals camp as the team prepares to defend its 2011 World Series championship. A career .270 hitter in the minors, Greene smacked 85 home runs and stole 144 bases in a little more than 600 games. Those numbers have yet to translate into major league success.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Scott Christopherson scored 29 points as Iowa State knocked off Kansas State 65-61 on Saturday.

The win was the seventh in the last nine outings for the Cyclones (21-8, 11-5), who began the streak with an upset of Kansas on Jan. 28. Jordan Henriquez led the Wildcats (19-9, 8-8 Big 12) with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks.

Down 59-56 with 3:50 to go, the Wildcats made a strong push to attempt to complete a comeback from a 10-point halftime deficit. Angel Rodriguez made a free throw to tie it at 61, but Christopherson hit his fifth 3-pointer to put the Cyclones back on top 64-61 with 1:30 to play. Rodriguez then missed two free throws. After Christopherson missed one of his own, Rodney McGruder’s 3-point attempt was no good, and Kansas State had to foul. Chris Allen made one of two from the line, and that was enough.
