Cardinals & Lance Berkman Agree To 1-Year Deal

Sports

September 22nd, 2011 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS, Mo., September 22, 2011 -St. Louis Cardinals Sr. Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak announced today that the Cardinals have agreed to terms with outfielder/first baseman Lance
Berkman on a one-year contract for the 2012 season.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Berkman, 35, has been a standout for the Cardinals this season, ranking among National League leaders in home runs (31), slugging pct. (.555), on-base pct. (.412) and batting average (.300), while playing a solid outfield.  Named an All-Star starter this year (his 6th selection), Berkman is batting .355 with runners in scoring position (ranking 2nd in the N.L.) and .394 during the Cardinals’ September charge.

“Lance proved to be everything we were looking for when we signed him last December,” stated Mozeliak.  “He’s an impact player who helped solidify our everyday lineup while also bringing a wealth of experience to our team.  We are excited to announce that he is going to remain a part of our team in 2012.”

The switch-hitting Berkman owns a career batting mark of .296 with 358 home runs and 1190 RBI in 1,767 games.  His career .409 on-base percentage is ranked 4th among active players and his .546 slugging mark is ranked 10th.    Berkman has placed among the N.L. top-10 in on-base pct. eight times and has finished among the league’s top-10 in batting on four occasions.  Berkman’s 358 career homers are 4th all-time among switch-hitters.

The six-time All-Star (2001-02, 2004, 2006, 2008 & 2011) holds the National League record for single-season RBI by a switch-hitter with 136 in 2006.  He’s had six seasons with 100 or more RBI and belted 25 or more home runs nine times, including a career best 45 in 2006.  His 31 home runs this season are just four shy of Rip Collins’ single-season (1934) club record of 35 by a switch-hitter.

The Cardinals announced a two-year contract extension thru 2013 for starting pitcher Chris Carpenter last week.

Iowa’s Archery Deer Hunting Season Begins October 1

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 22nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

One of Iowa’s most popular hunting seasons begins October 1st, when the archery deer hunting season opens. “We had over 57,000 bowhunters last year and I expect we will have a similar number this year,” said Tom Litchfield, state deer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  “Our herd is in good shape statewide, but hunters can expect to see fewer deer in most areas of the state.” Because of this, Litchfield said that while the antlerless quotas for all counties are unchanged from last year, hunters may need to refrain from shooting as many does as in past years especially in eastern Iowa. Hunters need to continue to work with landowners where deer numbers are still strong.

Iowa’s bow season attracts hunters who spend much of their time in tree stands often alone for hours at a time, so checking safety equipment is an important part of their hunting plan.  “Hunters should check all their gear to make sure it’s in proper working order, especially tree stands and safety harnesses,” Litchfield said.  “Hunters should always wear a safety harness and use caution when climbing. Falls associated with tree stand use are the most common hunting accidents during the bow season.”

Iowa’s bow season is Oct. 1st through Dec. 2nd, and then opens again Dec. 19th through Jan. 10th, 2012. Hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. All deer taken must be reported using the harvest reporting system by midnight the day after the deer is recovered.  Accurately reporting the harvest is an important part of Iowa’s deer management program and plays a vital role in managing deer populations and future hunting opportunities.  For hunters with Internet access, the online harvest reporting is the easiest way to register the deer. Hunters can report their deer online at www.iowadnr.gov, by calling the toll free reporting number 1-800-771-4692, or at any license vendor.

Additional Hunting Options

In addition to the bow season, many of Iowa’s urban areas and some state parks offer special hunts that bowhunters can participate in.  These hunts often have extra requirements so contact the organization listed in the hunting regulation brochure before going afield.

Legendary Iowa Coach To Headline IWCC Wrestling Season Kick-Off

Sports

September 22nd, 2011 by Jim Field

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA  –  Before taking the mat, Iowa Western Community College’s first-ever Reiver wrestling team will meet with its fans during a special fund-raising event Wednesday, October 26, at the Mid America Center. The Reivers and new head coach Josh Watts will welcome legendary Iowa Coach Dan Gable at their wrestling kickoff and dinner, to be held at the convention center on 1 Arena Way in Council Bluffs. Tickets for the event are $50 for adults and $25 for those 14 and under. Reservations by October 19 can be made by calling 712-325-3241. All funds raised from the dinner will be dedicated for IWCC’s wrestling program.

The name Dan Gable is synonymous with wrestling dominance in the state of Iowa. During his prep and college careers, Gable amassed an amazing 182-1 wrestling record. He was undefeated in 64 prep matches, and was 118-1 at Iowa State. His only defeat came in the NCAA finals his senior year. Gable was a three-time all-American and three-time Big Eight champion. He set NCAA records in winning and pin streaks.

As the University of Iowa’s all-time winningest wrestling coach from 1977 to 1997, Gable compiled a career record of 355-21-5, all at Iowa. He coached 152 All-Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and 12 Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists. The Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships, 21 under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator. He had a winning percentage of .932 and captured nine consecutive (1978-86) NCAA Championships. At the time that equaled the longest streak of national titles won by any school in any sport, and is also held by Yale golf (1905-13) and Southern Cal track (1935-43).

With the addition of the wrestling program, IWCC competes in 18 sports in Division I NJCAA. To learn more about IWCC athletics and the view the wrestling schedule, visit http://www.goreivers.com/.

Paul Rhoads Grateful Big 12 Working to Stabilize

Sports

September 22nd, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says he’s grateful that schools like Texas and Oklahoma appear to be working on staying in the Big 12.  Rhoads said Wednesday that he’s happy with the direction the beleaguered conference appears to be heading and what that means for his program.  Rhoads’s comments came one day after the Pac-12 squashed any hope of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech joining the conference, which could have been a deadly blow to the Big 12.  Rhoads says the Big 12 is a “pretty good” football conference and a strong one overall.  Iowa State spokesman Steve Malchow told The Associated Press Wednesday that athletic director Jamie Pollard declined to comment on the Big 12 situation.

Chiefs Put RB Charles On IR, Promote WR Horne

Sports

September 21st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have officially placed running back Jamaal Charles on season-ending injured reserve and promoted wide receiver Jeremy Horne from the practice squad. Charles tore the ACL in his left knee in the first quarter of Sunday’s 48-3 loss to the Detroit Lions. He is the third Chiefs player to sustain the injury in recent weeks. Tight end Tony Moeaki went down in their preseason finale and Eric Berry in a season-opening loss to Buffalo. Coach Todd Haley said Monday that he expected Charles to go on IR and the team made the move official Wednesday. The Chiefs also announced they signed offensive lineman Lucas Patterson to fill Horne’s place on the practice squad. Horne played in three games for Kansas City last season.

Iowa State Shatters Season Ticket Record

Sports

September 21st, 2011 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State has sold more season football tickets this season than any other year in the history of the institution.

Through Wednesday, the school had sold 37,446 season tickets and orders continue to come in. The previous record was 36,610 in 2007.

“It has been non-stop in the athletics ticket office,” Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “The team’s great start has also ignited single-game and mini-pack sales this past week.”

This fall’s season ticket number is nearly 6,000 more than last year, a remarkable 18.3 percent increase. The Cyclones’ opening two home games drew the second (56,085 vs. Iowa) and fourth-largest (55,481 vs. UNI) crowds in Jack Trice Stadium history.

“We have already sold more than 53,000 tickets for our game against Texas (Oct. 1),” said Pollard.  “Fans wanting tickets to the Texas game better act quickly because we expect to sell out in the next several days.”

Iowa State is on a pace to average more than 50,000 fans per home game this season. The Cyclones’ current home attendance average is ranked 35th nationally. That mark is higher than seven schools in the Big East, eight schools in the Pac-12, seven schools in the ACC and five schools in the Big Ten.
