Many new faces in 2023 for Atlantic volleyball

Podcasts, Sports

August 15th, 2023 by admin

The Atlantic volleyball team will have an abundance of new players on the court in 2023 after graduating 8 seniors that took the bulk of the floor time available last season. Head Coach Michelle Blake said it will be an inexperienced but athletic group this year.

The Trojans will have a smaller senior group this year but Coach Blake expects them to lead the way.

With turnover comes a lot of work to fit players into positions. Coach Blake said it will take some time to see where everyone fits in the best but the girls have had an open mind.

Coach Blake said the team has already showed some good foundational building blocks.

Atlantic will have their intrasquad scrimmage on the 17th at the Atlantic High School starting at 5:00 p.m. and is free to the public. They will then host the Iowa Girls Coaches Association clinic on the 19th with a wealth of Southwest Iowa teams playing. They will then open the season on August 24th at Des Moines Roosevelt.

Treasurer Smith Announces Michael Jordan Rookie Card to Be Auctioned

News, Sports

August 14th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Des Moines, Iowa) – A Michael Jordan rookie card will be added back to the safe deposit box contents auction running September 5th through the 20th. “After some excitement from the first auction earlier this year, we sent a Michael Jordan rookie card to be evaluated by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA),” said State Treasurer Roby Smith. “The card has been sent back to us with a rating of PSA 7, and we’ll be adding the rookie card as a lot in our upcoming auction. Make sure to check it out and get a peek of this rare item!”

Each year, the Treasurer’s Office receives two to three hundred safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned and is currently holding almost 3,000 boxes. When the Office runs out of room to store the boxes, it is forced to auction the boxes off. Some of the boxes currently being auctioned off have been held for 10 to 15 years. Before any auction, the Treasurer’s Office searches for the owner by sending out mailings; publishing names in newspapers and on social media; researching last known addresses; and providing opportunities for people to search in person at events. Proceeds from the auction stay in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt for the rightful owners to claim. If an owner comes forward before the auction, the items will be returned rather than sold.

Lone Star Auctioneers, specializing in selling unclaimed safe deposit box contents from state unclaimed property programs, will manage the auction. Lonestar will appraise each item in the box and will set the minimum bid. The auction website link is IowaUnclaimedProperty.org. Bidding is open to anyone registered and approved on Lone Star Auctioneers with a valid U.S. mailing address.

“I hope all past and present Iowans use this opportunity as a reminder to search GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov for their name, the names of friends, family and favorite businesses. Searching is fast, free and easy! Even if you’ve searched in the past, search again as properties are continually being added,” Smith concluded.

Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions, businesses and organizations that have lost contact with the owner for a specific period of time. Safe deposit boxes are just one type of unclaimed property the Treasurer’s Office safekeeps. Dormant checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, lost stocks, life insurance policies and utility deposits are also common forms of unclaimed property.

The AHSTW Vikings football team is looking for some new faces to lead the way and build off a very successful 2022 campaign. The Vikings are scheduled to open up the season on August 25th at home against the Tri-Center Trojans.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa men’s golf welcomes graduate transfer Josh Lundmark for the 2023-24 season. Lundmark joins the Hawkeyes from Cornell University and was a high school teammate of Iowa’s Mac McClear.

“We are excited to welcome Josh to the squad,” said head coach Tyler Stith. “He brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team. Josh is a competitor and will elevate the performance of his teammates.”

Lundmark led Cornell in stroke average each of the past two seasons. Last year, he averaged 73.57 strokes over 23 rounds, including eight rounds at or below par. Lundmark, who earned a spot in the lineup each year at Cornell, carded a team-best 18-hole round of 67 (-4) at the Columbia Autumn Invitational, where he finished fifth. That was one of four top-10 finishes for the season.

Prior to Cornell, Lundmark was high school teammates with McClear at Hinsdale Central in Hinsdale, Illinois. The duo helped lead the school to three consecutive Illinois Class 3A State Championships. Lundmark was named a Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-American in 2018 and became the top-ranked amateur in Illinois during the summer of 2019.
