KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel has had surgery on his injured throwing hand and coach Todd Haley still hopes that he will be back this season. Cassel hurt his right hand in Sunday’s 17-10 loss to Denver. The former Pro Bowl quarterback had surgery Monday evening to repair what Haley called a “significant” injury. Haley said Wednesday he doesn’t know when Cassel will be able to return. The team has not placed him on injured reserve, which means he could return this season. Haley said much of that will depend on how Cassel recovers this week. The Chiefs play Monday night at New England, giving backup Tyler Palko a little more time to prepare. Rookie Ricky Stanzi will be the backup.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State used a 17-0 second-half run to come from behind to defeat the Drake Bulldogs, 71-64, Tuesday evening at the Knapp Center. The win improves Iowa State to 2-0 on the season while Drake falls to 0-2.
Chelsea Poppens stepped up for the Cyclones in the second half. After a quiet first half from the junior, Poppens was the key to Iowa State’s late comeback and victory. Poppens contributed a team-high 18 points, 16 in the second half, and eight rebounds. Nikki Moody posted a career-high 16 points while Jessica Schroll added 13 and Hallie Christofferson 11. Christofferson completed her first career double-double with a team-leading 11 rebounds.
Down 59-50 with 5:55 to go, Iowa State put together a string of baskets and defensive stops to get back into the game. The Cyclones tied the game at 59-59 on a driving layup by Moody and a converted free throw. Iowa State took the lead with 2:33 to play when Schroll rebounded her own missed layup and put it back. Poppens put the Cyclones up for good with a fast break layup on an outstanding pass from Moody.
The Cyclones were down 50-37 with 10:27 to go in the half, Iowa State assembled an 11-1 run to reduce the deficit to 51-48 with eight minutes to play. Drake responded to get the lead back up to six multiple times before a three by Kyndal Clark put the Bulldogs back up 59-50 with 5:55 to go.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair as Drake and Iowa State both controlled play for portions of the first half. The first 20 minutes consisted of six lead changes and five times the scores were deadlocked. Iowa State took a late lead in the first half on a layup by Schroll to take a 23-22 lead with 3:17 to go but the Bulldogs would retake the advantage and go into the locker room with a 26-24 lead.
Iowa State shot a disappointing 5-of-20 from the field in the first half, including 0-of-5 from three. The Cyclones were better from the free throw line converting 14-of-18 attempts. The Cyclones were led by eight points from Moody followed by six from Schroll.
Christofferson posted five points and five boards in the first 20 minutes and Fallon Ellis provided four rebounds from off the bench.
The Bulldogs were led by an exceptional shooting effort from Stephanie Running. Running led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Rachael Hackbarth posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Clark also posted 15 points.
The Cyclones are back in action Sunday when they play host to Northern Arizona. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. CST tipoff.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ben Simons scored 24 points and Drake handed Iowa State its first loss of the season, beating the visiting Cyclones 74-65 on Tuesday night.
Rayvonte Rice added 18 points for the Bulldogs (2-0), who snapped a two-game losing streak to Iowa State that included a 91-43 defeat in Ames a year ago.
The Cyclones trailed by as much as 10 with 2:27 left, but Chris Babb’s 3-pointer a minute later cut the deficit to 66-63.
Simons responded with a floater and a pair of free throws sandwiched around a missed 3 by Babb, pushing the Bulldogs ahead by seven with 22 seconds left.
Royce White had his second straight double-double, compiling 21 points and 14 rebounds, to lead Iowa State (1-1).
Iowa State trailed by single digits to open the second half and it took nearly eight minutes for the Cyclones to grab the lead. Chris Babb’s pull-up 3-point shot put Iowa State up 44-43 with 12:26 left, drawing loud cheers from the sizable contingent of Cyclones fans who made the 35-mile trip to Des Moines.
But a game that had lacked flow from both sides suddenly found some, primarily from the Bulldogs.
Rayvonte Rice, who spent considerable time on the bench with three fouls, came back with seven straight points to put the Bulldogs up 56-50. Simons’s fourth 3-pointer of the night made it 59-52 with 5:27 left, and Karl Madison’s 3-point play and layup put Drake’s lead at 64-56 with just 2:43 left.
Babb and Tyrus McGee each added 10 points for the Cyclones, who shot just 36.8 percent from the field.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa is just 6-4 and 3-3 in the Big Ten despite a relatively easy schedule that has included seven home games. There’s nothing easy about the rest of it. Iowa wraps up the season with a pair of road games, starting Saturday at Purdue (5-5, 3-3) and finishing with new rival Nebraska on Nov. 25. The Hawkeyes are 0-3 on the road this season, losing at Iowa State, Penn State and Minnesota by a total of just 14 points. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says there’s no common thread in each of those road losses. He says the Hawkeyes have simply been outplayed.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State backup wide receiver Albert Gary has been charged with first-degree robbery stemming from a June incident in Ames. University police say the 22-year-old redshirt sophomore form Ocala, Fla., turned himself into the Story County sheriff’s office Tuesday. He’s being held on $25,000 bond. Gary is accused of committing a June 19 robbery at gunpoint on campus. Police say a man claimed he and two others were approached by about six men. One patted him down while displaying a handgun. The six men fled. Witnesses identified Gary as among those involved. Coach Paul Rhodes announced Monday that Gary was suspended for three games and will be available for Friday night’s game against No. 2 Oklahoma State.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Green Valley State Park (near Creston) will be closed Nov. 19th and 20th, for its annual special deer hunt. Green Valley will re-open to the public on Nov. 21st. The Green Valley State Park deer hunt is limited to 30 hunters using only muzzleloaders to harvest up to 60 antlerless deer. Hunters have already registered and will receive two antlerless tags each, redeemable only during the special hunt at the designated areas and specified dates. Additional DNR staff will be on hand to patrol the park boundaries during the event.
Alan Carr, Park Ranger at Green Valley says “This hunt helps to manage the deer population in the park. We have had seven successful hunts and expect this hunt will go as well as previous hunts. Hunters are required to attend a special safety meeting before the hunt where we explain the reason for the hunt, discuss the rules and identify the park boundaries.” Carr said the park hunt has shown to be a successful management tool for state parks.
“We are attempting to maintain a balance in the deer herd for the people who want to see deer when they come to park and for our neighbors who may want a smaller deer herd.” He says “The hunt will probably remain an annual event with the number of deer targeted for removal changing based on the population estimates.”
Hunters have been allowed to harvest up to 60 antlerless deer, the average harvest for the past seven years has been just over 40 deer. For questions, contact the park office at (641) 782-5131.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State will face by far its biggest test yet on Friday night when it hosts second-ranked Oklahoma State in a rare nationally televised game for the Cyclones. Oklahoma State is averaging nearly 52 points a game, which ranks second in the nation, and last week it scored 49 points in the first half of a 66-6 drubbing of Texas Tech. Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says the Cowboys offense might be the best he’s seen in his coaching career. Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden leads the Cowboys with 3,635 yards passing and 31 touchdowns.
