Hawkeyes Down Eagles, 1-0, in Season Opener

Sports

August 18th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

FORT MYERS, Fla.  University of Iowa women’s soccer opened the season with a, 1-0, victory at Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night at Pickering Field.

The Hawkeyes emerged from an extended pre-game weather delay with an energetic offensive effort, producing ten shots and five shots on goal in the first 25 minutes action.

The seventh shot connected, a stinger through the bottom of the net by redshirt junior Meike Ingles in her first appearance since the 2021 season. Ingles finished with three shots, including two shots on goal.

The skies cleared, and Ingles’ goal would be the only score of the night, but that was not the end of a hurricane-like Iowa offensive attack. The Hawkeyes put up 25 shots on Thursday, matching last season’s game-high total (Sept. 8 vs. Iowa State, Sept. 11 vs. UNI).

Newcomer Kelli McGroarty led the way with eight shots in 53 minutes of action. Junior Kenzie Roling was next for Iowa with four shots, including two shots on goal.

For its part, the Hawkeye defense allowed just four shots. Goalkeeper Macy Enneking hauled in a pair of saves, preventing two of the Eagles’ best looks of the match.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“This is a tough place to play against a team that knows how to win. I am happy with how we competed all game and really liked the chances our team created in both halves. As a group, our defending was quite sharp except for some transition opportunities. This is a good start to the season for us, handling weather adversity and a difficult opponent on the road.”

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • Iowa’s 10 shots on goal are the best since its effort against Michigan last season on Oct. 2, 2022.
  • The following players made their Hawkeye debuts: freshman Millie Greer (90 minutes), senior Kelli McGroarty (53), freshman Sofia Bush (46), freshman Abby Skiff (36) and sophomore Shae Doherty (28).
  • 90 Tracker: Four Hawkeye position players logged 90 minutes of game action, including fifth-year Samantha Cary, senior Rielee Fetty, senior Maggie Johnston and freshman Millie Greer.

UP NEXT

Iowa (1-0) opens the home slate on Sunday vs. Kansas City (1-0) at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (CT). The game will stream live on B1G+ (subscription required). Admission is free to all home soccer matches.

Cyclones Earn 100th Home Win; Down Arizona 2-1

Sports

August 18th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – Salomé Prat and Abigail Miller scored their first goals of the season, powering Iowa State past future Big 12 school Arizona, 2-1, on Thursday evening’s season-opening victory at the Cyclone Soccer Complex as the Cyclones earned their 100th home win in program history.

The Wildcats struck first in the tenth minute of the match, as Arizona forward Nicole Dallin capitalized off an Iowa State error, sneaking one past redshirt freshman Avery Gillahan to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead.

Gillahan, who competed in her first regular season collegiate game this evening, totaled two saves and played all 90 minutes as she picked up her first career win.

The Cyclones found the equalizer in the 18th minute as Mira Emma played a perfect lob pass over the Arizona defensive line to Prat, who buried one off the Wildcat keeper into the back left corner of the net to knot the game at one apiece.

Iowa State threatened late in the first half as an Emma shot just missed wide left and both teams went into the break with one goal on the board.

About 15 minutes into the second half, the Cyclones found the difference-maker as a Prat shot was deflected right to Alex Campana, who played the ball to Abigail Miller and Miller punched it into the lower right corner of the net to give ISU the edge.

Iowa State clamped down on defense for the remainder of the match, holding onto its 2-1 advantage and earning its first win of the season. The Cyclones got revenge for last year’s season-opener as ISU fell to the Wildcats in the desert by a matching score of 2-1.

17 different Cyclones saw the field on the night, and six played all 90 minutes. Besides Miller and Campana, fellow newcomers Kristin Boos, Nicolasa Jacobs and Regan John saw their first action in a Cyclone uniform.

Iowa State out-shot Arizona 8-7 and had the corner kick advantage, 5-3.

Fannon’s Thoughts

“We’ve got a really good group of new players that have added something that has been a big difference. We’ve also though, got a group of people who have fought through thick and thin and have been in a place where they’re ready to lead us. I think that being able to put that together and get that group to merge together has been what has stood out so far.”

Goals

Iowa State:Salome Prat (18’), Abigail Miller (’64)

Arizona: Nicole Dallin (10’)

Assists

Iowa State:Mira Emma, Alex Campana

Iowa State Releases 2023-24 Wrestling Schedule

Sports

August 17th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser announced the 2023-24 schedule Thursday, which includes home duals against Iowa, Pittsburgh, Northern Iowa and Missouri.

“I know my team and my staff are really excited about this schedule,” Dresser said. “Our home schedule is particularly exciting and demanding this year. I really wanted to put something together that would excite our fans and motivate them to get to Hilton a lot this year. I think it will be a fun season to watch.”

The Cyclones’ dual slate will include matchups against four of the top seven, and three of the top five, teams at last season’s NCAA Championships. In total, there are eight top-25 teams on ISU’s 2023-24 schedule.

Iowa State will open its season Nov. 5 against Cleveland State inside David Carr’s high school gym at Perry High School in Massillon, Ohio, a nod to Carr as he begins his final season as a Cyclone.

The Cyclones will host the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk dual against the Hawkeyes Nov. 26 inside Hilton Coliseum. Seven other home dates dot the schedule as ISU also welcomes Davidson (Nov. 12), Utah Valley (Jan. 12), Pittsburgh (Jan. 14), West Virginia (Feb. 2), Northern Iowa (Feb. 11) and Missouri (Feb. 25) in dual action.

Carr’s final match inside Hilton Coliseum could be Part IV of college wrestling’s best rivalry, and a rematch of last season’s 165-pound Big 12 and NCAA title matches, against Mizzou’s Keegan O’Toole.

Iowa State will also host the Last Chance Open (Feb. 18) inside the Lied Recreation Center.

The Cyclones will return to Humboldt, Iowa – the hometown of Dresser – for the third season in a row for a neutral site dual against Wisconsin (Nov. 19).

In December, Iowa State will wrestle at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 1-2) for the first time since the 2019-20 season. The Cyclones will also make their second consecutive appearance at the Collegiate Duals (Dec. 18). Iowa State will see Little Rock, Pittsburgh and Cornell at the event, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn. this season.

ISU will have only three true road duals this season, all in January. The Cyclones open the new year with a western road trip to Arizona State (Jan. 5) before a neutral site contest against California Baptist (Jan. 7) in Walnut, Calif. Iowa State will close the month with duals against Oklahoma (Jan. 26) and Oklahoma State (Jan. 28).

The 2024 Big 12 Championship (March 9-10) will be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla., while the NCAA Championships (March 21-23) will take place inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Television and streaming listings for all events will be communicated at a later date. To view the complete Cyclone wrestling schedule, click here.

Nodaway Valley football coach faces multiple child sex abuse charges

News, Sports

August 17th, 2023 by admin

A southwest Iowa man is facing dozens of child sex abuse charges for allegedly abusing a child for the past decade.

Forty-two-year-old Ryan Kissell had been employed as a coach by Creston schools, but was hired in May to teach and coach in the Nodaway Valley School District in Greenfield. Court records indicate the alleged abuse was not connected to school activities in Creston and did not happen on school property. The Creston News Advertiser was first to report that Kissell was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) and, according to a Creston Police report, the alleged abuse of a child has been going on since 2013. Kissell has been charged with one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, 24 counts of lascivious acts with a child and 21 counts of second degree child sex abuse.

According to statement from the Nodaway Valley School District, Kissell has been placed on administrative leave. He had been hired to be a special education teacher at the high school in Greenfield and as head football coach for the Nodaway Valley/Orient-Macksburg football team. School is scheduled to start next Wednesday in the district.

AMES, Iowa – For the second straight season, Iowa State had 14 gymnasts named Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WGCA) Scholastic All-Americans.

Iowa State’s 14 WCGA Scholastic All-Americans are tied for the most student-athletes receiving the award in program history. It is the fourth-straight season that the Cyclones have tallied double-digit selections.

Ana Palacios earned WCGA honors for a school-record fifth time, while Laura Cooke, Maya Ford, Madelyn Langkamp and Jade Vella-Wright each earned the recognition for the fourth time. Loganne Basuel claimed her third Scholastic All-American honor and Josie Bergstrom, Hannah Loyim and Rachel Wilke all picked up their second time on the list. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.50 or higher GPA during the academic year or cumulatively during their collegiate career to qualify for Scholastic All-America honors.
