DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Natural Resources Department says three people were shot during hunting accidents over the weekend, while another was injured today (Monday). All four men are expected to survive their wounds.

The latest incident was reported this (Monday) morning, when a Fort Dodge man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting deer in Webster County. 36-year old Michael Ziemann,  was preparing to take a shot at a deer with a .44 magnum handgun when the gun went off and the bullet when down through his right leg.  Zieman was hunting with two other people at the Brushy Creek wildlife area when the incident occurred shortly after 7-a.m. DNR Recreational Safety Officer Jeff Barnes said Ziemann was wearing heavy gloves at the time which caused him to activate the trigger. Barnes warns “Hunters need to be aware, particularly during cold weather, of the effects heavier clothing may have.”

Ziemann was transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge by other members of his hunting party where he was being treated for what was believed to be a non-life threatening injury. The DNR says a Grinnell man shot himself in a foot during a hunt in Page County on Saturday. 35-year old Benjamin Parker‘s gun fired after it got tangled in some bags he was carrying.Parker was taken to a Des Moines hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Also Saturday, an Altoona man was injured in Lucas County. The department says 25-year old Ryan Mills was shot when a deer ran between him and other people in his hunting group. The department says 38-year old Thomas Burns, of Waterloo, was shot on Sunday while hunting in Appanoose County. Burns was shot when another person in his group shot at a running deer.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – South Carolina and Nebraska will play in the Capital One Bowl Jan. 2 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Both teams accepted their bids Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 1987 and first-ever postseason matchup. Nebraska (9-3) is wrapping up its first year in the Big Ten and has a chance to post 10 wins for the third straight season. The Cornhuskers are making their fourth straight bowl appearance, with their last win coming in the 2009 Holiday Bowl over Arizona. South Carolina (10-2) is also making its fourth straight bowl appearance, but hasn’t won a bowl game since Houston in the 2006 Liberty Bowl. The Gamecocks won their final three games of the season, including a win over rival Clemson in the regular-season finale.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Oklahoma and Iowa are returning to the desert to face each other in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 30 in Tempe, Ariz. Iowa (7-5) beat Missouri 27-24 in last year’s Insight Bowl for its school-record third-straight bowl win. Oklahoma (9-3) also played in the Valley of the Sun last year, routing Connecticut 48-10 in the Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners will be playing in their 13th straight bowl game, but had higher expectations after opening the season at No. 1. Oklahoma is coming off a 44-10 loss to Oklahoma State that spoiled any chance it had of playing in a BCS bowl. Iowa, bowl eligible for the 11th straight season, had four wins over ranked opponents. The Hawkeyes struggled down the stretch, though, losing two of their final three games.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rutgers will play Iowa State in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30th. It’s the first meeting between the Scarlet Knights of the Big East and the Cyclones from the Big 12. Rutgers (8-4) is back in the postseason for the sixth time in seven years. The Scarlet Knights had their streak of five straight bowl appearances snapped last season. They finished tied for fourth in the Big East.

The Cyclones (6-6) have made only one bowl appearance since 2006. Iowa State knocked off No. 3 Oklahoma State 37-31 in double overtime to become bowl eligible. Syracuse beat Kansas State 36-34 in last season’s inaugural Pinstripe Bowl.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The way things started for Julie Wojta and Wisconsin-Green Bay, it was hard to fathom anyone would be talking about a career-best performance. As it turned out, Wojta and the Phoenix quickly turned things around to stay unbeaten.The senior forward scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the No. 23 Phoenix to a gritty 75-67 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday. She scored 16 of her points in the first half as Green Bay (7-0) bounced back from a sluggish start in which the Panthers jumped out to a 13-0 lead.

Green Bay (7-0) had survived seemingly the toughest part of its schedule with wins over Illinois, Georgia Tech and Marquette. But this was a scrappy Northern Iowa team coming off a Missouri Valley Conference title last season that nearly ended up facing the Phoenix in the second round of the NCAA tournament. So, while others may have looked past the Panthers, Bollant was relieved to escape with a win – especially considering his team’s early struggles. “I think Northern Iowa’s better than Marquette. I think they’re more dangerous, I think they’re better than Illinois and they might not be quite Georgia Tech but them and Toledo are two of the best teams we’ve played,” Bollant said. “You could see we didn’t have the adrenaline going, didn’t have the edge. So we’ll learn from that and hopefully not have that mentality because that will keep us from being the team we want to be in March.”

After their hot start the Panthers struggled, falling behind 42-28 at the half. They battled back in the second half, cutting the gap to 64-59 with only 3:56 left, but the Phoenix responded with eight straight points to put the game away.Katelin Oney had a stellar outing for the Panthers with 25 points. K.K. Armstrong added 14 points for the Panthers (5-2).Lydia Bauer scored 19 points and Megan Lukan added 13 off the bench for the Phoenix.Green Bay has won 27 straight regular season games.
