ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 16, 2011 – Following their 2011 World
Championship season, the St. Louis Cardinals have continued to receive
several special honors, earning selection by Baseball America as its
2011 “Organization of the Year”. In addition, Cardinals Senior Vice
President & General Manager John Mozeliak was voted the recipient of the
MLB.com GIBBY (Greatness in Baseball Yearly) award as “MLB Executive of
the Year.”
While the Cardinals 11th World Championship title and the team’s storied
comeback to reach the postseason were crowning achievements, Baseball
America also saluted the Cardinals organization for its overall success,
including championship seasons for both Quad Cities (Midwest League-A)
and Johnson City (Appalachian League-Rookie).
The Cardinals minor league system ranked 4th overall in the majors with
a .530 winning pct. (401-355) and Springfield (AA) first baseman Matt
Adams was named Texas League Player of the Year. Adams and pitcher
Shelby Miller were named the Cardinals Minor League Player and Pitcher
of the Year respectively for 2011.
The Cardinals’ “Organization of the Year” selection by Baseball America
was their first ever. The nationally recognized baseball trade
publication has been honoring baseball’s top organizations since 1982.
Mozeliak’s selection was part of the 10th annual GIBBYs and was based on
millions of votes in a comprehensive process that included fans who
voted at MLB.com; media members; front-office personnel; and MLB alumni.

ST. LOUIS, Mo., December 15, 2011 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced
today that they have signed left-handed relief pitcher J.C. Romero to a
one-year contract for the upcoming 2012 season. The 35-year-old
free-agent has 11-plus years of service in the majors with five Major
League clubs.
“Romero is a proven lefty specialist, who has been a valuable bullpen
piece for winning teams throughout his career” said Cardinals’ Senior
Vice President John Mozeliak. “We felt that it was important to
maintain versatility and depth within our bullpen and we feel that J.C
will be a solid addition.”
During his big-league career, Romero has compiled a 34-28 won-loss mark
with seven saves in 664 games and a 4.07 ERA. He leads Major League
lefthanders in games pitched from 2002-2011 with 633, while his 517.0
innings pitched during that time span ranks 2nd among lefty relievers.
His .208 opp. BA (177-for-852) against left-handed batters is the lowest
among all Major League lefties (min. 800 AB’s) since 2002, as are his 11
home runs allowed.
Two of Romero’s top seasons came in 2007 and 2008. With Boston and
Philadelphia in 2007 he pitched a combined 74 games, allowing just 12 ER
over 56.1 IP (1.92 ERA). In 2008 he pitched in a career high 81 games
for the World Champion Phillies and surrendered just 18 runs over 59.0
IP for a 2.75 ERA.
Romero has made six career postseason appearances, three with the
Minnesota Twins and three with Philadelphia, and he pitched for Puerto
Rico in both the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics.
Romero ended the 2011 season with Colorado after beginning the year with
Philadelphia. He also saw action in the Washington Nationals and New
York Yankees minor league systems last season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The founder of a Nebraska hedge fund and his wife are donating $5 million to the University of Iowa to benefit finance students and Hawkeye football players.The university announced Wednesday that Curtis and Carol Lane of Omaha made the gift, which UI President Sally Mason called a “creative, forward-looking act of generosity.” She said the Lanes have been some of the UI’s biggest fans and most effective champions.About $1 million of the money will endow an existing fund named in their honor that supports business faculty members who provide practical learning opportunities for UI finance students. Another $2 million will endow a scholarship fund for undergraduate finance majors, with preference given to military veterans.The final $2 million will endow a scholarship fund for Hawkeye football players.
The St. Louis Cardinals finalized a two-year, $14-million free agent deal with shortstop Rafael Furcal, a trade deadline pickup who helped them in their run to the World Series title. The deal was completed Wednesday, after the 34-year old Furcal passed a physcial. He gets salaries of $6-million next year, and $7-million in 2013, along with a $1-million signing bonus.
Furcal batted .255 with St. Louis, solidifying the defense along with the leadoff slot. He turned 36 double plays, the most among NL shortstops, in the final two months. The Cardinals moved to retain Furcal, after slugger Albert Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels, freeing-up payroll. They had been considering giving prospect Tyler Greene a shot at regular duty.
