IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — After a pair of tough road losses, Iowa needed senior Matt Gatens to provide leadership, stability and, above all else, a strong game against rival Drake. Gatens was brilliant on both ends of the floor on Saturday night. Gatens led five Hawkeyes in double figures with 20 points and shut down Drake star Ben Simons as Iowa knocked off the Bulldogs 82-68 to snap a two-game losing streak. Bryce Cartwright added 12 points for the Hawkeyes (6-5), who also avoided their first sweep at the hands of their instate rivals Drake, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. Melsahn Basabe, Aaron White and Marble each scored 10 points for Iowa.
Rayvonte Rice led Drake (6-4) with 23 points, 19 of those coming in the second half. Iowa capitalized on Drake’s poor shooting – just 11 for 30 in the first half – into open looks at the other end. The Hawkeyes shot 57.6 percent in the first 20 minutes and got 26 of their 44 points inside the paint. The Hawkeyes had been humbled on the road in their last two games, decisive losses at Northern Iowa and Iowa State. The Panthers beat Iowa by 20, and the Cyclones led by as many as 24 points before cruising to an 86-76 win. But the Bulldogs have never had much success at Iowa, and Saturday night wasn’t any different. Jordan Clarke had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Drake, which committed 19 turnovers and lost for the 29th time in 32 trips to Iowa City.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa wrestler Montell Marion has again been arrested on suspicion of a traffic violation. The Gazette of Cedar Rapids reports that Marion was arrested Friday for driving while barred – his third traffic-related arrest in Johnson County. A Johnson County Jail staffer told the newspaper that the 23-year-old Marion was stopped by campus police earlier Friday afternoon.
Marion was suspended from the wresting team in 2010 after he was arrested for drunken driving that spring, but was reinstated in January. A jail staffer said Marion was released Friday afternoon on a promise to appear in court.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The mayors of Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa, will build a Habitat for Humanity home this weekend to settle a friendly wager over the Nebraska-Iowa football game.The men placed the bet on Nov. 18 on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge over the Missouri River between the two states. Under the terms of the deal, the mayor that backed the losing team would have to build a house in the winning mayor’s city.The Nebraska Cornhuskers beat the Hawkeyes 20-7 on Nov. 25, so Council Bluffs Mayor Tom Hanafan will be building a house in Omaha on Saturday. Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle plans to lend a hand.
The (5-5) Iowa Hawkeyes are looking for their first win over an instate opponent this season when they hosts Drake (6-3) tonight. The Hawkeyes lost at Northern Iowa 80-60 and lost at Iowa State 86-76. Drake beat the Cyclones 74-65 in Des Moines on Nov. 15th, but the Bulldogs are still looking for their first true road win.
Iowa’s Devyn Marble has led the Hawkeyes in scoring in each of their last two games since moving to the starting point guard spot. Iowa leads the series with Drake 55-10 overall, but the Bulldogs have won three of the last five meetings. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Norm Parker has been the defensive coordinator at Iowa so long that it’s tough to remember who preceded him. But at age 70, Parker maintained Friday that it’s time to move on. Parker – better known as “Norm” to the Hawkeyes- will call it quits after the Insight Bowl against Oklahoma on Dec. 30th.
Parker’s unassuming persona and rock-solid defenses, which ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense in 2008 to 2010, have been a hallmark of the Hawkeyes program. He’ll be remembered fondly by his players and coach Kirk Ferentz. But Parker says he feels it is time for him to step aside and let someone else have a crack at his job.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State football Coach Paul Rhoads has repeatedly said that he is proud to be a Cyclone and Friday he added an exclamation point to that sentence by agreeing to a 10-year contract.
“To say that I’m appreciative and humbled is a huge understatement,” Rhoads said. “So many people have contributed to what has been achieved in our program the first three years. I want to thank President Geoffroy and Jamie Pollard, who personally met with me to begin contract talks after the Kansas game in early November. The support of everyone in Cyclone Nation has been fantastic. It’s great to be a Cyclone.”
Rhoads is taking his 2011 team to the Pinstripe Bowl in New York’s Yankee Stadium later this month, the school’s second bowl appearance in three years. During his tenure, Rhoads has quickly ignited a fan base, which broke a nearly three-decade old attendance mark this fall. His teams have authored several of the biggest wins in school history, including the nationally televised upset of second-ranked Oklahoma State in overtime.
“Today is a great day for Iowa State University,” Pollard said. “Paul Rhoads and Iowa State are a perfect match for one another and we could not be happier that he is going to be our football coach for the long term.”
Iowa State has confirmed that the total value of Coach Paul Rhoads’ 10-year contract is $20 million. Full terms of the contract will be released at a later date.
