CLEGHORN—The DNR is investigating a manure discharge from a cattle operation in northern Cherokee County after receiving multiple complaints Friday.

DNR staff confirmed that manure runoff from the Tentinger Feedlot is reaching a tributary of Bear Creek about 4 miles northeast of Cleghorn. DNR staff will work with the owner to stop the discharge.

The investigation is ongoing, but DNR staff think runoff from recently land-applied manure is responsible. They did not see any fish in the stream—either dead or alive.

The DNR will consider appropriate enforcement action.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police in central Iowa say a fleeing suspect has been shot by a Clive officer after the suspect pointed a handgun at the officer. The Clive Police Department says in a news release that the shooting happened in West Des Moines early Saturday morning following a brief high-speed chase on Interstate 235 and, later, on foot.

Police say an officer chasing one suspect between houses shot the suspect after the fleeing man pointed a handgun at the officer. The suspect was rushed to a local hospital. Neither his identity nor his medical condition had been released by mid-morning Saturday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A former Des Moines sports radio host accused of swindling at least eight people out of $1.5 million has pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud. The Des Moines Register reports that 60-year-old Marty Tirrell entered the plea Friday in federal court. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced on April 7.

Prosecutors say Tirrell told investors he could buy sports tickets with their money, resell them, and split the profit with them. But prosecutors say Tirrell soon began lying to the victims and sending them bad checks while spending their money on personal items or to pay back other investors.

Officials at a Des Moines zoo say a 3-month-old seal pup born there has died. Blank Park Zoo officials say the pup, born Aug. 20 and named “Lucy,” died on Nove. 24. A news release issued by the zoo said a necropsy showed Lucy died after suffering from “failure to thrive.” Zoo spokesman Ryan Bickel says that means the pup wasn’t processing enough calories to survive.

Officials say Lucy was not eating on her own in the last weeks of her life and required fluids and supplements from keepers. The zoo now has three harbor seals: Lucy’s parents, Meru and Ross, and her older brother, Monty.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports three recent arrests.

On Thursday, December 5th Deputies served two arrest warrants on inmate Allen Scott Long. Long was additionally charged with Sexual Abuse 3rd Degree and Assault While Participating in a Felony. His bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety.

On Friday, December 6th at 1:50am Joleen Mary Most turned herself in to the Sheriff;s Office on an outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear. The original charge was for Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Also on Friday Adams County Deputies conducted a traffic stop at 9:28am on Sycamore Avenue, near the intersection with 250th Street. During the stop K9 Baxo was deployed and gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics. Upon further investigation Charlie Harper, Luther Stopp Jr., and Hunter Soap, all of Oklahoma, were placed under arrest for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Two methamphetamine pipes, a marijuana pipe, and marijuana grinder were located in the vehicle.

Early Saturday morning the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office arrested two individuals on drug charges. At approximately 3:00am Deputies with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office made contact with a 2020 Hyundai Elantra parked in the 1200 block of Main Street in Hamburg. Fremont County K9 Roby was deployed, leading to a search of the motor vehicle. During the search, deputies discovered approximately ½ ounce of methamphetamine as well as drug paraphernalia.

Two people in the vehicle were arrested. 37-year-old Amanda Gordon of Omaha and 39-year-old John Long of Little Elm, TX were both arrested for Possession of More than 5 Grams of Methamphetamine, with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp.

Both are being held without bond pending initial appearance with a Magistrate

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Villisca man on Friday night: At 11:59pm Damyn Carl Stacy of Villisca was arrested for OWI 1st Offense and Driving While Suspended with 9 withdrawals in effect. The arrest occurred at the intersection of 155th Street and V Avenue, east of Morton Mills. Stacy was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A national lottery group agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by an Iowa man who claimed that a $9 million jackpot he won in 2011 would have been bigger if the previous one hadn’t been fixed by an insider. An email released Friday shows that the Multi-State Lottery Association informed directors on Oct. 9 that it agreed to pay Larry Dawson $1.5 million as a “full and final settlement” of his claims.

The association had refused to release details of the settlement. The Iowa Lottery, which is a member of the association, released the email in response to open records requests.

Officials with the Iowa DCI said today (Friday), that on Wednesday December 4th, Chad Alan Wessels was arrested in Rock Rapids, Iowa, for First Degree Theft, a Class C Felony.   Wessels was the George Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) Treasurer from February 2014 to September 2019.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was contacted in September 2019 due to concerns about the possibility of missing funds from GEMS.  The ensuing investigation identified approximately $18,000 in unauthorized checks written to Chad Wessels during his time as treasurer. It is also estimated that Wessels took approximately $8,000 in cash donations.

Wessels is currently out on bond from the Lyon County Jail.
