TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Flying cameras have been providing unique perspectives on everything from golf to college and professional football for more than a decade, becoming so commonplace that fans rarely notice the whizzing remote-controlled devices. At the Insight Bowl on Friday night, no one could miss the overhead camera when it came crashing down to the field late in the fourth quarter, nearly taking out one of the players. The ESPN camera narrowly missed Iowa receiver Martin McNutt Jr., who became entangled in the guide wire but wasn’t hurt.
“First, I looked: What is it that fell from the sky?'” McNutt said after Iowa’s 31-14 loss to No. 19 Oklahoma. “The next thing I know, the camera kind of scratched me a little bit. It was just pulling me and I knew I didn’t want to keep going with it.” ESPN has consistently used the cameras for football coverage, making it a staple of “Monday Night Football.” The cameras also have been used occasionally in the NBA, NHL, NASCAR, NCAA basketball, baseball and at the island-green 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship.
The cameras, despite flying over the playing field, have rarely interfered with the action. In 2007, a cable camera was forced to make a controlled decent during an NFL game between the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks from what was called human error. At the 2009 Las Vegas bowl between BYU and Oregon State, the overhead camera reportedly had to be taken down due to wind gusts of around 40 mph. The incident at the Insight Bowl occurred with Iowa trying to rally from a 10-point deficit in the closing minutes.
While lining up for a play near the 20-yard line at the south end of Sun Devil Stadium, two Hawkeyes had to jump out of the way when the camera fell when the wire appeared to snap with 2:22 left. McNutt dodged the camera as it fell behind him, but became entangled in the guide wire after it thudded to the ground. McNutt suffered only a minor scratch, but the game was delayed for about five minutes as crews dragged the camera off the field and made sure the wire was out of the way. McNutt was able to joke about the incident.
“I fell like somebody was trying to kill me on their (Oklahoma’s) staff,” he said. “If you are looking, I’m looking for you. No. It was lucky it didn’t hit me.”
EVANSTON, Ill. — University of Iowa junior Matt McDonough earned his second Midlands title in three years to help the Hawkeyes win their tournament record 22nd team title at the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship. McDonough pinned eighth-seeded Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech in the 125-pound finals. Iowa piled up 152 points, 46.5 more than tournament host Northwestern (105.5). Oklahoma (94.5), Virginia Tech (76.5) and Edinboro (74.5) rounded out the top five.
The Hawkeyes finished the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships with 11 place-winners and a combined 60-26 record.
The top-ranked Hawkeyes return to the mat Friday, Jan. 6, at Indiana. Iowa will put its 83-dual unbeaten streak on the line against the Hoosiers at 6 p.m. (CT) inside University Gym. The Hawkeyes then host Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 7. IOWA CITY, Iowa — Friday night the Hawkeyes (8-5, 1-0) made 12 3-pointers and defeated Northwestern (10-4, 0-1), 86-55, in the Big Ten opener on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
With Iowa trailing 13-12 eight minutes into the first half, senior Kamille Wahlin nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key that gave the Hawkeyes the lead and ignited a furious run. Soon after Wahlin’s 3-pointer, Jamie Printy stole a Northwestern pass, threw a deep outlet pass to Wahlin, who then pulled back and found a trailing Printy for a deep triple that gave the Hawkeyes a 19-15 lead with 9:52 left in the half.
Printy led the Hawkeyes with 20 points, eight assists and three steals.
The Hawkeyes now travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face unbeaten Ohio State on Monday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT), and it will be televised live on the BTN.
Insight Bowl – Oklahoma 31, Iowa 14
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Blake Bell ran for three touchdowns to help No. 19 Oklahoma survive a late rally and a crashing camera to beat Iowa 31-14 in the Insight Bowl.
Oklahoma (10-3) didn’t get a particularly great game from quarterback Landry Jones and wasn’t effective on the ground, either. Once considered national-title contenders, the Sooners grinded it out against the gritty Hawkeyes, ending a difficult year that included the death of linebacker Austin Box in the offseason.
Jones threw for 161 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Bell put the game away with a 21-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left.
Iowa (7-6) fell into a 21-0 hole before rallying behind two touchdown passes from James Vandenberg. The Hawkeyes came up just short and dodged a potential disaster when an overhead camera crashed to the field next to receiver Marvin McNutt in the closing minutes.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s Chelsea Poppens notched her second-straight double-double (19 points/13 rebounds) and the Cyclones stifled Buffalo to just 14 second-half points en route to a 65-45 victory Friday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State improves to 9-2 on the year and the win clinched the Cyclone Challenge tournament title. ISU is now 31-0 in regular-season hosted tournaments under Bill Fennelly. The win was the 600th victory in Iowa State women’s basketball program history.
Poppens had another monster game, as the junior averaged 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in the two tournament games to earn Cyclone Challenge MVP honors. Poppens also recorded a career-high four steals.
Lauren Mansfield finished the game with 10 points and handed out a season-high nine assists.
Hallie Christofferson was also named to the all-tournament team. She had 10 points and six rebounds on the evening.
The Cyclones forced 21 turnovers and held the Bulls to 28.6 shooting (6-21 FG) in the second half.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — A camera hanging from a wire over Sun Devil Stadium fell onto the field at the Insight Bowl. The camera, which provides overhead shots for ESPN, fell Friday night when the wire it was attached to appeared to snap with 2:22 left in the game between Oklahoma and Iowa. The camera bounced off the field around the 20-yard line on the south end and narrowly missed Iowa receiver Marvin McNutt Junior, who got tangled in the wire after the camera hit the turf. McNutt wasn’t injured and the camera had to be dragged off the field, causing a delay of about 5 minutes. The 19th-ranked Sooners went on to beat the Hawkeyes 31-14.
NEW YORK (AP) — Chas Dodd hit Brandon Coleman for an 86-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter and Jawan Jamison ran for two scores to lead Rutgers over Iowa State 27-13 in the Prinstripe Bowl on Friday. The Scarlet Knights (9-4) ran their bowl winning streak to five and improved to 2-0 this season at Yankee Stadium, where they beat Army last month. Rutgers, which played in one bowl game before 2005, is 5-1 in the postseason under coach Greg Schiano. The Cyclones (6-7) finished the season on a three-game losing streak, their last win coming on Nov. 18 in Ames, Iowa, when they pulled off the biggest upset of the season against Oklahoma State.
That night Jared Barnett threw for 376 yards. This game, Steele Jantz relieved Barnett in the second quarter and helped pull the Cyclones within 20-13 in the fourth on Jeff Woody’s 20-yard touchdown run with 10:00 left.
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The Southeastern Community College men’s basketball team is forfeiting the season’s remaining 12 games because 10 players have been dismissed for violating college and athletic department rules.
The Hawk Eye of Burlington reports that two other players have been declared academically ineligible.
That left only two players from the 14-man roster.
The team had gone 13-3 so far this year.
Terry Carroll is the men’s coach and the school’s athletic director, and he says the players violated the school’s athletic code of conduct.
In a statement, Carroll says “these have been good kids who made some incredibly irresponsible and poor choices.”
Because of confidentiality and student privacy laws, the college would not disclose details.
College President Beverly Simone says she supports Carroll’s decisions.
