ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is taking a leave of absence to attend to wife Jeanine as she recovers from surgery to remove a brain tumor. The team said Thursday night that no time table has been determined for Duncan’s return. General manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny will meet to determine how the team will fill Duncan’s position during his absence.

NORMAN, Okla. – Aaryn Ellenberg scored 21 points, Joanna McFarland equaled a career-high with 19 points and Oklahoma rode its hot hands, making 11-of-18 (61 percent) shots from three-point range to beat Iowa State 80-50 Wednesday in the Lloyd Noble Center. OU is now 9-3 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play. Iowa State, which was led by 12 points and seven rebounds from Chelsea Poppens, is 9-3 overall and 0-1 in league action.
Iowa State controlled the first segment of the first half. The Cyclones made all four of their shots during a four-minute stretch as two free throws by Brynn Williamson gave Iowa State a 17-10 lead with 11:36 left in the initial stanza. The Cyclones hit on six of its first nine shots while Oklahoma was 4-of-13 from the field out of the gate.
McFarland led the Sooners back into the game. The 6-3 junior hit three straight shots, the last to tie the game at 18-18 with 7:38 to go. Iowa State hit but one of its 10 last shots of the first half. McFarland had the hot hand for Oklahoma, scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds as the Sooners raced to a 32-20 lead at halftime on a 23-2 run. Iowa State had two assists and 12 turnovers in the first half.
Iowa State got 11 second-half points from Anna Prins and closed the gap to 13 at 61-48 on a jumper by Chassidy Cole with 5:22 left. OU responded by scoring 11 straight point to put the game away. Cole’s 10 points was a season-high.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa freshman running back Mika’il McCall is leaving the program. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Wednesday that McCall intends to transfer. The 18-year-old McCall had a promising debut, rushing for 61 yards in the season opener before breaking his ankle. He returned in late November, but had just 4 yards rushing in a win over Purdue. McCall, from Dolton, Illinois was suspended for the final two games because of an undisclosed violation.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Anthony James scored 16 points and Northern Iowa used a 13-0 run late in the first half to down Indiana State 65-48 on Wednesday night. Marc Sonnen added 15 points and Jake Koch 11 for the Panthers (11-4, 1-2 Missouri Valley). Dwayne Lathan led the Sycamores with 15 points (10-4, 1-2). Carl Richard scored 10. The Panthers shot 43 percent (24 of 56) but converted 7 of 15 3-pointers. Indiana State was limited to 37 percent from the floor (18 of 48). Lathan cut the Sycamores’ early deficit to 15-11 with 8:23 left. But then Northern Iowa strung together 13 consecutive points for a 28-11 lead with 2:40 to go in the first half. The Panthers led 32-16 at the break, but Indiana State trimmed it to 33-28 on Jordan Printy’s 3-pointer with 17:24 to play. However, Northern Iowa closed the game with a 12-2 run.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s transfer-laden team has struggled with consistency at times this season. The newcomers didn’t have any trouble carrying the Cyclones in their Big 12 debuts. Chris Babb scored 17 points and Iowa State beat Texas 77-71 Wednesday night in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Royce White added 14 points and Chris Allen scored 13 for the Cyclones (11-3), who won their league opener for the first time in five seasons. They did so behind Babb, White, Allen and fellow newcomer Anthony Booker, who combined for 55 of Iowa State’s 77 points. Texas star J’Covan Brown finished with 19 points despite missing most of the second half after turning his right ankle. Clint Chapman added a career-high 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Longhorns, who lost just their second Big 12 opener in 14 tries under coach Rick Barnes. Sheldon McClellan’s layup with 16 seconds left pulled the Longhorns (10-4) within 75-71. But that was as close as they would get, as Allen sealed it from the free-throw line.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For the first time in five seasons, Iowa has back-to-back Big Ten victories on the road. The Hawkeyes were determined and poised enough to overcome an 11-point deficit at Minnesota late in the first half and even endure six straight missed free throws in the final 40 seconds. The Gophers simply lost their way — and their confidence. Matt Gatens had 19 points, six rebounds and three steals to lead Iowa’s second-half surge past Minnesota for a 64-62 win on Wednesday night. Maverick Ahanmisi’s runner from the edge of the lane in traffic bounced off the other side of the rim as the buzzer sounded, giving the Hawkeyes (10-6, 2-1) their first win over their border-state rival in five years. Fueled by a head-turning victory at then-No. 11 Wisconsin last weekend, the Hawkeyes hounded the Gophers into 4 for 23 shooting from 3-point range and forced 6-foot-11 center Ralph Sampson III into six turnovers. Up next for Iowa is a home game against No. 6 Ohio State, then a trip to No. 10 Michigan State, followed by a visit from No. 16 Michigan.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff has announced he has declared for the NFL draft.
The Gazette in Cedar Rapids reports the 23-year-old native of Parkston, S.D., confirmed his decision Tuesday.
The 6-foot 6-inch 300 pound Reiff was a first-team all-Big Ten pick this fall and second-team as a junior. He is projected by many to be a first-round pick.
He played four years for the Hawkeyes, starting for nearly three full-seasons. He was red-shirted his freshman year, keeping him eligible for four more seasons, and next season would have been his final year of eligibility.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has named wide receivers coach Courtney Messingham as its offensive coordinator. Messingham replaces Tom Herman, who left to become the offensive coordinator for Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Messingham has spent three seasons under coach Paul Rhoads, coaching tight ends in 2009 and 2010. Messingham is a Waterloo, Iowa native and played at Northern Iowa. He was the head coach at Upper Iowa from 2003-04 and an assistant at Southern Mississippi and Missouri State before joining the Cyclones. Rhoads says in a statement that Messingham has earned the promotion through his hard work as a coach and recruiter. Rhoads says there’s no timetable for hiring a receivers coach to replace Messingham.
