Iowa and Iowa State Men’s Basketball games preview 1-7-2012

Sports

January 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa men’s basketball team is seeking their third straight win when they host sixth-ranked Ohio State this afternoon. The Hawkeyes are coming off surprising road wins at Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Buckeyes only losses came at Kansas, when they were without star Jared Sullinger, and at Indiana. Ohio State has won six straight over the Hawkeyes, but Iowa leads the series 73-69. Tip-time in Iowa City is 2-p.m., with pre-game coverage beginning at 1, on AM 1220, KJAN.

The Iowa State men’s basketball team meanwhile, is looking for its seventh straight win today, when they travel to face Texas A&M. The Cyclones have dropped eight in a row to the Aggies and five straight in College Station. Texas A&M opened Big 12 play with a loss at Baylor, while Iowa State beat Texas 77-71 in its league debut. This will be the last time the Cyclones play at Texas A&M as Big 12 rivals, since the Aggies are headed to the SEC next season. The game is scheduled to begin at 3-p.m. at Reed Arena in College Station.

And, Northern Iowa takes on Drake tonight at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, beginning at 7 o’clock. The Bulldogs have won 11 consecutive games at home, including an impressive showing against Indiana State in the conference opener. The Panthers are coming off a victory over Indiana State.

Iowa State’s Palo Out with Fractured Wrist

Sports

January 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg says Bubu Palo will be out 6 to 8 weeks because of a fractured wrist. The sophomore guard from Ames injured his wrist in Iowa State’s (11-3) victory against Mississippi Valley State on December 31st. He played in the Cyclones’ 77-71 win against Texas in the Big 12 opener for both teams on Wednesday. Hoiberg says MRI results on Thursday confirmed a “slight crack” in Palo’s shooting hand.
