WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Robbie Hummel scored 17 points to help Purdue defeat Iowa 75-68 on Tuesday night. Hummel also had 11 rebounds and affected the game in many ways, despite shooting just 5 for 14 from the field. Lewis Jackson scored 14 points, Ryne Smith scored 12, Kelsey Barlow had 11 points and seven rebounds and Terone Johnson added 10 points for the Boilermakers (14-5, 4-2 Big Ten), who bounced back from a 67-62 loss to Wisconsin that ended their 26-game home winning streak. Zach McCabe scored 20 points, Roy Devyn Marble had 18 and Matt Gatens added 12 for the Hawkeyes (11-9, 3-4), who were coming off a 75-59 win over Michigan. The Hawkeyes led by 11 points in the first half, but didn’t shoot well after that. Purdue swept the season series, having won 79-76 in Iowa City on Dec. 28.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The number of deer killed during the recent hunting season was down about 4 percent from last year. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says in a news release Tuesday that Iowa hunters killed nearly 113,000 deer during the season that ended Jan. 10. That is also down about 21 percent from 2006. Although the numbers of deer taken are down, the DNR says the number of deer licenses issued has remained about the same since 2006. Dale Garner, chief of the DNR’s Wildlife Bureau, says the reduced kill numbers are the result of the reduced deer population. He says officials will review the deer harvest and make proposals to reduce the number of deer killed and stabilize the state’s deer population.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are looking for their third Big Ten road victory in four tries when they take on Purdue this evening at Mackey Arena. The Hawks have won at Wisconsin and Minnesota. Tonight’s game will be their first return game with a conference opponent this season. Purdue won 79-76 in Iowa City in the Big Ten opener on Dec. 28th, with Robbie Hummel leading the way with 16-points and 11-rebounds. Purdue swept the season series with Iowa three times in the last four years. The Boilermakers have lost two of their last three games, the latest a 67-62 setback to Wisconsin at home. Iowa has defended the three-point line well in its three Big Ten victories, holding opponents to 15 of 82 (18.3%) from long range in those games.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — No St. Louis Cardinals player can be happier to have Carlos Beltran on their side than pitcher Kyle Lohse. The new right fielder is a .564 career hitter against Lohse with four home runs, six doubles and 12 RBIs. Add in 11 walks and the switch-hitting Beltran has a stunning .647 on-base percentage. Lohse, a 14-game winner last year, joked at the team’s Winter Warmup that Beltran was the greatest player in history. The 34-year-old Beltran got a two-year, $26 million free agent deal after a strong comeback season with the Mets and Giants, rebounding from two injury-plagued years. The Beltran pickup helps the World Series champions move on from the loss of Albert Pujols. The title team, minus Pujols, will be honored at the White House on Tuesday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa football player A.J. Derby is leaving the program after a season in which coach Kirk Ferentz moved him to defense from quarterback. The school said Monday that Derby, an Iowa City native, had been granted a release from his scholarship and will transfer elsewhere. Derby thanked his coaches but said, “unfortunately, I don’t feel this is the best fit for me personally to reach my goals as a student-athlete.” He initially won the backup quarterback job last fall as a redshirt freshman, completing 3 of 6 passes for 30 yards. But he was suspended for two games in October after he was arrested on charges of public intoxication and criminal mischief. When Derby returned to action, Ferentz had him practicing at linebacker and playing in games on kickoff coverage.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — An attorney representing three alleged victims of a reported sexual assault involving the wrestling team at Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield says he wants an independent investigation. Two members of the wrestling team were arrested last week. Eighteen-year-old Mikel Anthony Feick and 17-year-old Jacob Wayne Schliessman, both of Greenfield, are charged with second-degree sexual abuse. Fieck has been released from the Adair County Jail in Greenfield, on $25,000 bond. Schliessman plead not guilty to the offense last Friday, and has waived his preliminary hearing. He’s scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning (Jan. 19th). Schliessman is currently being held on $25,000 bond at the Juvenile Detention facility in Edlora.
Attorney Martin Fisher, of Adair said Monday, that he’s hiring the Critelli law firm in Des Moines to investigate the allegations. Police say the alleged assault occurred on Dec. 19th in the high school’s wrestling room. Local law enforcement and the school district are also investigating.
