STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Alex Bentley scored 21 points and No. 22 Penn State beat Iowa 68-52 on Sunday, hours after longtime Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno died of cancer. There was a pregame moment of silence for Paterno, the winningest coach in college football. The Lady Lions also sported black bands on their uniforms as a tribute.
Down 48-50 with 6:32 remaining, Penn State (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten) closed with a 20-2 run. Ariel Edwards added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Penn State, which shot 24 of 71 (34 percent) and 1 of 7 (14 percent) from 3-point range. Kamille Whalin led Iowa (11-9, 3-4) with a season-high 21 points. The Hawkeyes committed 15 turnovers and were outrebounded 53-34. The Lady Lions, who entered Sunday ranked 15th in the nation in field goal percentage, started off sluggish. They shot 12 of 37 (32 percent) in the first half and trailed 32-31 at the break.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Hallie Christofferson had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Iowa State beat No. 17 Texas Tech 66-49 on Sunday to end the longest losing streak in coach Bill Fennelly’s 17 seasons. Leading 26-23 at halftime, Iowa State (10-7, 1-5 Big 12) missed its first seven shots in the second half, then ran off 12 straight points to start a 17-3 run that put the Cyclones in control and ended their five-game losing streak. Texas Tech (14-4, 2-4) missed 12 of its first 13 shots in the half and never recovered, falling behind by as many as 20. points The Lady Raiders have lost four straight after a 14-0 start. Lauren Mansfield added 12 points, while Chelsea Poppens had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Cyclones, whose 0-5 start in the Big 12 had been the program’s worst under Fennelly. Monique Smalls’ 13 points led Texas Tech, which shot just 28 percent.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some question whether Iowa needs to continue giving celebrities easy access to deer hunting in the state, but it appears unlikely that the promotional program will be scrapped. The state program gives 75 celebrities, such as rocker Ted Nugent and former professional athlete Bo Jackson, an opportunity to buy a special out-of-state deer hunting permit each year. Other non-residents might wait years to buy a similar permit. The celebrity program began in 1998 to help promote the state as a top hunting destination. Iowa Bowhunters Association President Randy Taylor tells the Des Moines Register that he’s not sure the state really needs the promotion now because deer hunters nationwide already consider Iowa a top spot to bag a trophy deer.

LUBBOCK, Texas — Tyrus McGee scored 20 points and Chris Allen had 14 to lead Iowa State past Texas Tech 76-52 on Saturday.
The Cyclones led most of the way and put the game out of reach at the end of a 10-2 run midway through the second half, capped by Royce White’s dunk, to lead 48-31.Iowa State (14-5, 4-2) took advantage of Texas Tech turnovers, converting the Red Raiders’ 15 errors into 21 points. The Cyclones got another 34 inside, as White dished the ball to teammates when the defense collapsed around him.Iowa State, third in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage, hit 8 of 25 from beyond the arc.
Robert Lewandowski tied his career high with 20 points to lead Texas Tech (7-11, 0-6).The Red Raiders last lost their first six conference games in 2000.
