Indiana State Defeats Northern Iowa 59-54

Sports

January 26th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Carl Richard scored 17 points to lead Indiana State to a 59-54 victory against Northern Iowa on Wednesday night. Richard was the only player in double figures for the Sycamores (12-9, 3-7 Missouri Valley), who never trailed and held the Panthers (14-8, 4-6) to 36 percent shooting from the floor. Seth Tuttle scored 22 points and Johnny Moran added 11 for Northern Iowa. Marc Sonnen, who entered Monday with a 10.1 scoring average, was held to four points but made a 3-pointer for a 16th straight game. Sonnen had a putback that would have cut the Indiana State lead to 56-54 with 1:21 remaining, but it was waived off due to a foul. Jake Odum increased the Sycamores’ cushion to six points with a jumper.

Drake Loses to No. 15 Creighton 77-69

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake got big nights from its two stars, Rayvonte Rice and Ben Simons, and put a significant scare into No. 15 Creighton. Doug McDermott and the Bluejays were just too much for the Bulldogs to handle, keeping Drake from moving closer to the Missouri Valley’s elite. McDermott scored 30 points and No. 15 Creighton held off Drake 77-69 on Wednesday night for its sixth straight road win. Jahenns Manigat added 15 for the Bluejays (19-2, 9-1 MVC), who have the program’s longest road winning streak in 37 years. Creighton let a 15-point lead dwindle to two early in the second half against the Bulldogs. But McDermott helped keep the Bulldogs from getting any closer, scoring 10 straight points late in the half. Rice had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Drake (12-9, 5-5), getting his seventh 20-point game of the season. Ben Simons added 18 and Kurt Alexander added 16 points off the bench. Creighton never trailed in the second half in winning its ninth straight overall.

Texas Ends Losing Skid by Beating Iowa State 62-55

Sports

January 25th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Off to its worst Big 12 start in 14 years, Texas was desperate for a win. The Longhorns finally got one, even if they let what could have been a rout turn into a nervous finish in the final minute. Myck Kabongo scored 13 points, Julien Lewis had 12 and Texas ended a three-game losing streak with a 62-55 victory over Iowa State on Tuesday night. Texas (13-7, 3-4 Big 12) got the victory despite a bad night by leading scorer J’Covan Brown, who scored 12 on 3-of-16 shooting and compounded that with five turnovers. Brown and Kabongo made key late baskets that held off an Iowa State rally. The Cyclones trimmed an 18-point second-half deficit to 58-55 after 3-pointers by Chris Allen and Chris Babb in the final minute. Brown made two free throws with 21 seconds left, and Kabongo’s steal from Allen and fast-break layup 9 seconds later ended it. Iowa State beat Texas in the conference opener, but the Big 12’s top 3-point-shooting team struggled badly from long range in the rematch. The Cyclones average nine 3-pointers but were just 5 of 21 on Tuesday night. Royce White led Iowa State (14-6, 4-3) with 15 points, 15 rebounds and five assists but scored just four in the second half and was just 1 of 7 shooting free throws.

    Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

January 24th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Monsanto Seed Company said Tuesday Blane Kerkhoff, of Audubon, has been selected as a winner in the “America’s Farmers Grow Communities” contest, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. The donations are available through the Monsanto Fund. Kerkhoff has designated the Audubon High School Wresting Fund to receive the award in Audubon County. Audubon Community School District Superintendent Brett Gibbs, Kerkhoff and a Monsanto representative will participate in a check presentation ceremony Saturday morning, beginning at 9:30., at the Audubon High School (800 3rd St. in Audubon).

Farmers in 39 states and 1,245 counties were eligible to win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit.  America’s Farmers Grow Communities is part of a broad commitment by the Monsanto Fund to highlight the important contributions farmers make every day to society, by helping them grow their local communities.

Nearly 60,000 farmers participated in the second annual Grow Communities program, which is designed to benefit nonprofit groups such as ag youth, schools and other civic organizations. For more information and to see a full list of winners, visit www.growcommunities.com

Senate committee votes to override lead-shot ban

    Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

January 24th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa legislative committee has voted to overturn a Natural Resources Commission rule that would have banned hunting mourning doves with lead-shot ammunition. The Senate Natural Resources committee voted 9-3 for the measure on Tuesday. The commission last year unanimously recommended lead-shot ammunition be banned. Environmental advocates say it can harm or kill animals when ingested. A legislative committee put the ban on hold, but it would take effect if lawmakers don’t reverse the rule before adjourning in a few months. If lead-shot is banned, steel-shot ammunition would still be allowed. But hunters say steel-shot doesn’t perform as well, and is inconvenient and expensive. The resolution now goes to the full Senate.
