Illinois State defeats Drake 64-53

Sports

February 9th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Tyler Brown scored a career-high 26 points and Jackie Carmichael had 18 points and 20 rebounds Wednesday night, leading Illinois State past Drake 64-53. Carmichael nearly matched Drake’s rebounding total as the Redbirds (16-9, 8-6 Missouri Valley) owned a 45-23 advantage on the boards. Brown made all 12 of his free-throw attempts and Carmichael was 10 of 12 while the Bulldogs overall were 7 for 13 from the foul line. Jeremy Jeffers led Drake with 13 points. Aaron Hawley scored 12 and Rayvonte Rice scored 11 for Drake (13-12, 6-8), which has lost three straight since beating Wichita State in triple overtime on Jan. 28. The Bulldogs never led on Wednesday, but Illinois State never was ahead by more than 13 and didn’t put the game out of reach until the final minutes. Drake shot 39 percent while the Redbirds shot 34 percent.

Dog racing days could be numbered in Iowa

News, Sports

February 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Bills that would end greyhound racing in Iowa are moving on two tracks at the statehouse. Early this morning (Wednesday), a three-member panel in the Iowa House reviewed a plan that would let the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs and the Mystique Casino in Dubuque stop subsidizing the prizes for dog races, effectively ending greyhound racing at those two facilities. Representative Kevin Koester, a Republican from Ankeny, says there are “clear signals” nationally that the days of dog racing are numbered.  “Having spent time listening to both sides, the issue comes down to not if the dog racing by greyhounds will last forever…it’s a matter of when…it clearly is going to end,” Koester says.

Representative Brian Moore, a Democrat from Zwingle, says this proposal violates the “integrity” of the agreement state officials struck in 1983 when they legalized greyhound racing. “I think we need to honor this business,” Moore says. “There’s too many times that a particular side isn’t making out as well as the other side and then we think we have to yank the rug out from under them.”

Early this month another bill on the subject cleared an initial hurdle in the Iowa Senate. That legislation would have the casinos in Council Bluffs and Dubuque pay the state 70-million dollars over seven years in exchange for ending greyhound racing in their facilities. Casino representatives suggest there are often more dogs than people at the greyhound parks in Iowa, while a lobbyist for the greyhound industry says the casinos have stopped promoting the races, making it difficult for patrons to follow the action. According to a casino lobbyist, 27 greyhound tracks around the country have closed in the past five years, leaving just 23 operating today.

Illness Sidelines Drake’s Simons.

Sports

February 8th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Drake will be without second lead scorer Ben Simons tonight (Wednesday), when the Bulldogs visit Illinois State. The junior forward missed Saturday’s loss to Missouri State after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. Drake coach Mark Phelps expects the Bulldogs to play better without Simons now that they have had a few days to adjust. His absence is a tough blow to the Bulldogs who stand 6-7 in the Valley and 13-11 overall. Drake beat Illinois State in the first matchup in Des Moines. The Redbirds are 7-6 in the league race.

ISU Falls at Oklahoma State

Sports

February 7th, 2012 by admin

STILLWATER, Okla. — Le’Bryan Nash hit the winning fadeaway jumper with 4.7 seconds left and blocked Chris Allen’s attempt for the tie at the buzzer to lift Oklahoma State to a 69-67 victory against Iowa State on Tuesday night.

The Cowboys (12-12, 5-6 Big 12) avenged perhaps their most heartbreaking defeat of the season, having lost on Scott Christopherson’s banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer in Ames.

After a game filled with back-and-forth runs, this one came down to the final play too.

The Cyclones (17-7, 7-4) wiped away an eight-point deficit over the final 5 minutes behind Allen’s strong 3-point shooting, but Nash connected to put OSU back ahead. Allen, who hit a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, drove past the arc and into the lane, but Nash swatted his shot into the stands and preserve the win.

Markel Brown led Oklahoma State with 19 points. Nash finished with 18.
