Hawkeyes Burned By 3’s at Northwestern.

Northwestern took control early with a 16-2 run and rolled past the Iowa Hawkeyes 83-64 in Big Ten play, Thursday night.  The Hawkeyes turned the ball over 18 times and Northwestern connected on 13 three pointers in the game as the Hawks fall to 5-7 in the conference race.  Freshman Aaron White was one of the few bright spots during the game. He finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Iowa is off until a trip to Penn State next Thursday.

Iowa Football Tickets Up $2 in 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Tickets for Iowa football games will go up $2 per game in 2012. Iowa athletic officials say the slight increase will push season tickets to $388 for next season’s seven-game home schedule.  Season ticket holders will have a chance to renew their tickets in early March, and single-game tickets will go on sale in late June if they’re available. Iowa is charging $70 per ticket for games against Iowa State and Nebraska.  The Hawkeyes are asking $60 for tickets for their game against Northern Iowa on Sept. 15. Iowa has sold out 54 of its last 56 games at Kinnick Stadium.

Mansfield Lead ISU Women Over Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Lauren Mansfield hit on 5-of-8 3-point attempts and finished with a season-high 21 points to lead Iowa State (14-8 overall, 5-6 Big 12) to its fifth win in six, 65-52, over Missouri (10-12 overall, 0-11 Big 12) at Mizzou Arena.

Mansfield’s trio of second-half threes kept Missouri at bay, as the Tigers could not get closer than 12 points in the second half after trailing by 17, 39-22, at the half. Mansfield added a career-high eight rebounds for the Cyclones.

Chelsea Poppens had 11 points and 10 rebounds, her league-leading 11th double-double this season. Chassidy Cole had two points and a career-high 11 rebounds for Iowa State.

The Cyclones went inside during the first portion of the first half. Three straight successful jumpers by Anna Prins and two buckets by Poppens were part of a 16-2 run that put the Cyclones up 21-7 with 8:06 left in the half. The Cyclones poured in four more 3-pointers, the last from the corner by Kelsey Harris with 58 seconds left in the half, as Iowa State led by as much as 19 in the first half.

While making 6-of-10 3-point attempts in the first half, Iowa State was holding Missouri to 25 percent shooting from the floor. Kyley Simmons and BreAnna Brock had 14 points each to lead the Tigers.

Iowa State plays at Texas Tech at 1:30 p.m. CST Sunday on ESPN2.

Iowa women prepare for two home games

Iowa womens basketball coach Lisa Bluder is hopeful that Jamie Printy will be ready for the start of next season. The junior suffered a season ending knee injury last week in a victory at Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes will be on their home court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for two games this week, beginning with tonight’s matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The game begins at 7-p.m.  Iowa will also host Michigan State, at 2-p.m. Sunday. A 6-5 Big Ten record and 14-10 overall mark this week, gives the Hawks a chance to boost their post-season hopes.

Iowa’s Ferentz introduces defensive coordinator

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Phil Parker could have left Iowa for a defensive coordinator’s job at another major program more than once. Ferentz says that while he appreciated Parker’s loyalty, the reason he made Parker Iowa’s new defensive coordinator was because he the best man for the job. Ferentz announced Parker’s promotion from defensive backs coach Tuesday. Ferentz says Parker has proven himself over his 13 seasons with the Hawkeyes and will be outstanding in his expanded role.

Northwestern hosts Iowa tonight in men’s basketball

Northwestern will seek its third straight win when it hosts the Iowa Hawkeyes tonight (Thursday) at the Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Hawks are just one game from moving back to .500 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats won both meetings against Iowa last season. The Hawkeyes are 9-1 when scoring 80 or more points under coach Fran McCaffery. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 7-p.m., with the tip-off at 8.

Wichita State beats Northern Iowa 82-57

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Joe Ragland scored 19 points, leading four Wichita State players in double figures, and the Shockers beat Northern Iowa 82-57 Wednesday night. Ragland was 5 of 7 from 3-point range and David Kyles had 16 points, making all five of his shots from the field including four 3-pointers, for Wichita State (21-4, 12-2). The Shockers lead the Missouri Valley race by one game over No. 17 Creighton; they travel to Omaha, Neb., to play the Bluejays on Saturday. Toure Murry scored 12 points and Garrett Stutz had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Wichita State, which never trailed against the Panthers (16-10, 6-8). Seth Tuttle led Northern Iowa with 15 points. Wichita State led by 21 before UNI closed the half on a 13-0 run to trail 43-35 at the break. The Panthers got within three points, but the Shockers later scored 12 in a row to put it away.
