Defense has been a strength at Iowa State and with a new quarterback and running back the Cyclones will lean on that unit as they seek to rebound from a 4-8 record. Junior Myles Purchase is part of a secondary that may be the best in the Big-12.

Purchase says he has made a lot of progress under first year secondary coach and former NFL veteran Hank Poteat (poh-teet).

Hopes are high at Iowa where the Hawkeyes open on Saturday at home against Utah State. After featiring one of the nation’s worst offenxses a year ago the Hawkeyes are confident they will show improvement. coach Kirk Ferentz said last week he is optimistic quarterback Cade McNamara will be ready to go after an injury during a Kid’s Day scrimmage. McNamara led Michigan to a Big Ten title two years ago.

McNamara says they are not focused on what happened last season.

McNamara is confident in what the offense will accomplish.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Sacramento State, 3-0, on Saturday evening inside Yosemite Hall.

Senior Caitlan Buettner posted her second double-double in as many matches with 11 kills and 10 digs, and junior Amanda Darling time Buettner for the most assists. Senior Bailey Ortega registered a team-high 13 assists

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Sac. St., 25-19): The Hornets came out quick, taking the first four points of the match and swapping points with the Hawkeyes as they closed the gap, down 7-9. Scoring was back and forth until the Hornets built an eight-point lead. Iowa built momentum as it went on a five-point run at the end of the set, closing in on the Hornets, 19-23, but Sacramento State took the set.

SET 2 (Sac. St., 25-21): Sacramento State took an early lead in the second set, scoring three-straight. Iowa was able to put together a four-point run and lessen the deficit, 6-7. The Hawkeyes kept chipping away, but the Hornets held the lead throughout the set. A five-point run put the Iowa within two, down 19-21. Sacramento State tallied two points before Iowa took a timeout and came out of it, scoring two more times before the Hornets secured the set.

SET 3 (Sac. St., 25-21): The Hawkeyes took an early lead off of Hornet errors, up 4-1. Iowa kept the lead until Sacramento State went on a run to take its first multipoint lead of the set. Both teams battled to keep within three points of the other. The Hornets closed out the set with three-consecutive points to win the match.

The Atlantic Cross country competed in Glenwood this morning for the first meet of the season. The girls and boys team both finished in top five spots overall. The boys’ team finished fourth, mainly led by Alex Sonntag who placed ninth; Bennett Whetstone, 12th; Devon Fields, 21st; Tyrell Williams, 24th; Braden Spurr, 26th; Vincent Meisinger, 30th; and Christian Thompson, 45th.

The girls finished third (66), Harlan second (51), and Glenwood (44).

Claire Pellett led the pack with fourth overall; Belle Berg, 10th; Katrina Williams, 14th; Megan Birge, 22nd; Hailey Huffman, 24th; Mariah Huffman, 29th; and Faith Altman, 32nd.

The next meet for the Atlantic Cross Country Team is Tuesday, August 29th at Dallas Center-Grimes.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Dionne van Aalsum’s two goals in her career debt led the seventh-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over No. 12 Wake Forest on Friday night in a neutral site ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup at Karen Shelton Stadium.

“Fantastic start for this team,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “We got off to a fast start and were able to build momentum in each quarter. We grew in monumental ways today. Could not be prouder of the grit and resilience shown.”

The Hawkeyes scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute when Aalsum found the back of the cage.

Freshman Miranda Jackson extended the Hawkeyes lead, recording her first career goal in the 42nd minute, unassisted.

Aalsum scored her second goal of the game in the 50th minute, unassisted. Less than two minutes later, fifth-year senior Sofie Stribos took advantage of a penalty stroke in the 52nd minute off an assist by junior Lieve Schalk and junior Jacey Wittle to close out the game.

Iowa’s defense held the Demon Deacons to four shots and just one shot on goal.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced today it will debut a gameday student-athlete availability report for all football competition during the 2023 season. In addition to the conference-wide reporting, the Big Ten has partnered with U.S. Integrity (USI) to enhance monitoring efforts and provide additional educational resources to help prevent student-athletes, coaches, and staff from engaging in prohibited sports wagering.

“The well-being of our students, coaches, and staff, as well as the integrity of our competitions are of paramount importance,” said Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti. “Enhanced transparency through availability reporting and partnering with U.S. Integrity strengthens our efforts to protect those who participate in our games as well as the integrity of the games themselves. I’m grateful for the collaboration of our schools, coaches, and administrators.”

Big Ten institutions are responsible for submitting gameday availability reports prior to every contest this season. Information will be submitted by schools no later than two hours before scheduled kickoff times to the conference office and distributed on BigTen.org/FBReports and @B1GFootball on X (née Twitter). Breach of the gameday reporting policy will be subject to disciplinary action under the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy.

The Big Ten, in collaboration with all 14 institutions, will work to evaluate the process and accuracy of information throughout the season, refining the protocol as needed.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — University of Iowa volleyball defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs, 3-1, on Friday night at the Sacramento State Invitational inside Yosemite Hall.

Redshirt junior Anna Davis returned to the court in her first match in a Hawkeye uniform, leading with a .389 hitting percentage, smashing eight to the ground on 18 attempts. Senior Caitlan Buettner also made her debut and posted her first double-double as a Hawkeye with 13 kills and 18 digs, and senior Delaney McSweeney added 10 kills and finished the match with a .333 hitting percentage and .476 kill percentage.

Senior Audrey Black registered career-high aces, racking up four on the evening. The assists were split by senior Bailey Ortega and freshman Kaia Mateo, tallying 20 and 16, respectively.

Iowa has won both of its season openers under head coach Jim Barnes.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (IOWA, 25-16): The Hawkeyes opened the first set with back-to-back points from McSweeney before the Mustangs took the next four. After that, the two teams exchanged points, tying at eight, nine, 10, 11, and 12. Iowa then started to pull away with a pair of kills from Davis and Buettner and an ace from Black, leading 16-13. The teams exchanged points once again as Mateo registered a kill, and the Hawkeyes capitalized on an attacking error from Cal Poly, expanding their lead, 19-15. The Mustangs tallied their last point of the set with the score at 19-16 as Iowa closed, winning the next six possessions.

SET 2 (IOWA, 25-23): It was back-and-forth to start the second set, trading a couple points each. With kills from junior Michelle Urquhart, Davis, Black, and Buettner, the Hawkeyes went up, 7-5. Buettner put an end to a six-point run from the Mustangs with a kill assisted by senior Bailey Ortega. The two teams went back and forth again before the Hawkeyes found their own run and took the lead, 14-13. The battle continued, but once Iowa took the lead at 17-16, they stayed atop. With a 19-16 Iowa lead, the Mustangs took a time out and swapped points with the Hawkeyes, closing the gap, 20-19 Iowa. An error and consecutive kills from sophomore Nataly Moravec added cushion to Iowa’s lead, 23-19, but Cal Poly wasn’t going down without a fight. The Mustangs brought the score to 24-23, Iowa, and McSweeney closed with a kill assisted by Ortega.

SET 3 (Cal Poly, 27-25): Throughout the entire third set, the teams exchanged points without allowing either more than three-consecutive points. They went point-for-point to start the set before Iowa jumped in front with a 7-3 lead. The back and forth continued until Cal Poly went on a three-point run of its own, pulling close with Iowa up, 12-11. Following three-consecutive points from Cal Poly and the Mustangs taking their first lead of the set at 18-17, Iowa called timeout and retaliated with another three-point run to pull ahead, 20-18. The two teams tied five times before the Mustangs were able to pull out their only winning set of the match.

SET 4 (IOWA, 25-12): In the early moments of the fourth set, Iowa jumped out front, leading 3-1. The Hawkeyes pulled out front, 8-3, with the help of two Mustang errors and a pair of kills from Buettner and Davis before Cal Poly called its first timeout of the set. The teams swapped no more than two points at a time as the score added up to 15-11, Iowa. A kill from Buettner and an ace from Black called for a timeout from the Mustangs, but Black served up an ace and took advantage of two more errors before Cal Poly scored its last point of the match with Iowa ahead, 20-12. A couple of errors, a kill from Davis, and two from Urquhart sealed the match for the Hawkeyes. Iowa commanded the floor, allowing Cal Poly to score back-to-back points only twice throughout the set, while the Hawkeyes went on runs of four or more, three times.

AMES, Iowa – Coming off its first setback of the 2023 campaign, Iowa State will look to finish its three-game road trip strong as it faces off with the unbeaten South Dakota State Jackrabbits. ISU and SDSU will meet this Sunday, August 27, at 1 p.m. and the match will be streamed on the Summit League Network.

It will be the teams’ first meeting since 2018, and the Cyclones haven’t lost in Brookings since 2008. Iowa State’s three-game road trip began with a 1-0 win against Northern Colorado before it fell to in-state rival Iowa, 2-1.

• The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
• Lauren Hernandez got her name in the scoring column in Thursday night’s loss to Iowa. The sophomore converted off an Olivia Edwards free kick to pull the Cyclones within one with eight minutes remaining.
• Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 62.1% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the 23rd-highest ranking in the country.
• Two ranked Big 12 schools, Texas and UCF, dropped matchups on Thursday.
• Mira Emma was the difference in Iowa State’s last matchup – a 1-0 win over Northern Colorado – as she buried a PK past the UNCO goalkeeper to put the Cyclones in front.
• After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities.

Leading the Cyclones 

Iowa State’s 2-1 record is thanks to a balanced offensive attack. Four different Cyclones (Salomé Prat, Abigail Miller, Mira Emma and Lauren Hernandez) have goals to their names. Prat notched the first goal of the season against Arizona, and Abigail Miller tallied the game-winning goal. Mira Emma was the difference against Northern Colorado, scoring off a penalty kick, and Lauren Hernandez tallied her first score of the season against Iowa. Four different Cyclones have assists, and Emma leads the team in overall points with three.

Two Cyclones have played all 270 minutes of action so far on the year, Hanna Reid and goalkeeper Avery Gillahan. Gillahan’s early season play resulted in her earning Big 12 Freshman of the Week. She also recorded the first clean sheet of her career against Northern Colorado.

Scouting South Dakota State 

South Dakota State has been off to a great start in 2023, owning a perfect 3-0 record and outscoring its opponents 12-1. Most recently, SDSU is coming off a 2-1 win over Drake in Des Moines.

Senior forward Maya Hansen has a team-high four goals and an assist for a total of nine points to lead the Jackrabbit attack. Both Jadenn Carrillo and Jenna Hallen each have a pair of goals, while four others have found the back of the net. Laney Murdzek has a team-high three assists, and 11 other players have one to their name.

The Jackrabbits have used a pair of goalkeepers through two games of action, with each keeper playing an ever 135 minutes. Jocelyn Tanner has two starts, while Emma Knack has just one. Knack is the GK who allowed the only Jackrabbit goal.

Series History 

The Cyclones and Jackrabbits will meet for the 13th time this Sunday as Iowa State leads the all-time series, 7-3-2. The two schools will meet for the first time since 2018, a game that saw Iowa State earn a 2-0 win in Ames. ISU has lost just one match in Brookings, back in 2008, when it fell to the Jacks 2-1 in doubles overtime.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State redshirt junior J.R. Singleton will be the latest Cyclone defensive lineman to wear No. 58 in honor and remembrance of former assistant coach Curtis Bray.

The tradition dates back to the 2014 season as an honor to Bray, who passed away that year from a pulmonary embolism. Bray’s presence is still felt inside the Bergstrom Football Complex and each season a new Cyclone is picked to wear the number he wore during his outstanding career at Pittsburgh from 1988-92. Bray was on the Cyclone coaching staff for five seasons (2009-13).

Singleton, a Gurnee, Illinois, native, has been a fixture on the defensive line the last two seasons after redshirting his freshman season in 2020. He is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

“Being chosen to wear the number 58 is nothing short of a blessing,” Singleton said. “Not only are you representing the known name Bray, but you’re representing the ability he had to impact others. We talk about legacy a lot in this program. I always ask myself “how do you want to be remembered?” If I can leave an impact on this team, community and my family I think I struck good. I am grateful for the opportunity and ready for the challenge.”

For the second year, the Curtis Bray Memorial Scholarship will be given in Singleton’s name to a student on campus. This year’s recipient is Savanna Wuebker, a psychology major.
