Bishop Heelan 77, Dubuque Wahlert 60
Sioux City Bishop Heelan is a step closer to another appearance in the Class 3A state championship game.
MaKayla Augustine led another big offensive outing with 22 points and third-ranked Bishop Heelan pulled away in the second half to beat No. 6 Dubuque Wahlert 77-60 in the opening game of the 3A tournament.
Madison Yohe added 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders, who are the highest-scoring team in their class and almost reached their season scoring average of 79.3 points. Alex Fuller chipped in with 11 points.
Bishop Heelan improved to 24-1 and will play in a semifinal game at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Crusaders won the state championship in 2008 and 2010 and finished second in 2009.
Wahlert made a nice run over the second half of the season after losing University of Iowa recruit Claire Till, who had knee surgery in January. Tessa Leytom led the Golden Eagles with 21 points, making 10 of 18 shots. Logan Lynch scored 13 points, while Beth Walker had 10 points and 16 rebounds for Wahlert, which finished 20-5.
Western Christian 47, Estherville-Lincoln Central 45
Western Christian won its rubber match with Estherville-Lincoln Central and is now one victory from playing for the Class 2A state championship.
Kim Kroeze scored on a putback with 4.9 seconds left to break the game’s final tie and fifth-ranked Western Christian held on to beat No. 6 Estherville-Lincoln Central 47-45 to advance to Thursday’s semifinals.
The Wolfpack rallied from 10 points down early in the fourth quarter to beat Estherville-Lincoln Central for the second time in three ties. It was Western Christian’s 10th straight victory and 13th in the last 14 games, including a 19-point win over Estherville-Lincoln Central in the regular season finale.
Alissa Pollema and Jamie Gesink led Western Christian with 12 points each and Brooke Wolterstorff added nine. Pollema scored six straight Western Christian points down the stretch to key the Wolfpack’s final charge.
OA-BCIG 48, West Marshall 41
Jessie Pauley helped save her top-ranked team from what would have been a stunning upset.
Pauley scored 17 of her 28 points in the second half and OA-BCIG rallied to beat unranked West Marshall 48-41 in a first-round Class 2A game.
OA-BCIG raced to an early 10-point lead, fell behind by nine, then clawed back to remain unbeaten. The Falcons will take a 26-0 record into a semifinal game at noon Thursday against fifth-ranked Western Christian.
Pauley, who’ll play at Northern Iowa next season, also grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked three shots and made five of her team’s 13 steals, which helped the Falcons overcome their 27.7 percent shooting. Morgan VanDerSloot added 11 points for OA-BCIG, which is the defending state champion and has won 52 straight games.
McKenzie Shipley led West Marshall with 14 points and nine rebounds. Hailee Halverson added eight points for the Trojans, who finished with a 20-6 record.
Pella Christian 66, West Hancock 63
Pella Christian continued a recent surge with its biggest victory yet.
The 15th-ranked Eagles made one key play after another and upset No. 2 Britt West Hancock 66-63 in a first-round Class 2A game.
Guard Jasmin Schelhaas scored 17 points to lead Pella Christian, including six straight free throws in the fourth quarter to help her team finally gain control in the back-and-forth game. Schelhaas finished 10 of 13 at the line and also grabbed six rebounds.
Cali Vink hit three 3-pointers and added 14 points for Pella Christian, while Christina Nolte had nine points and three steals for the Eagles, who have won 14 of their last 15. They’ll take a 22-3 record into a semifinal game at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.
IKM-Manning 71, Bellevue 55
IKM-Manning’s Tember Schechinger filled the stat sheet in leading her team to the Class 2A semifinals.
Schechinger just missed a triple-double, scoring 23 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and handing out nine assists as the third-ranked Wolverines beat No. 14 Bellevue 71-55. IKM-Manning trailed 31-29 at halftime, but the Wolverines began the second half with an 11-2 run, then turned things over to Schechinger and let her take charge the rest of the way.
A Northwest Missouri State recruit, Schechinger scored 14 of her team’s 18 points as IKM-Manning built an insurmountable lead. She also finished with five steals and two blocks and committed just one turnover.
Kaylee Blake added 12 points and freshman Morgan Muhlbauer scored 10 for IKM-Manning, which will take a 24-2 record against No. 15 Pella Christian in a semifinal game at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Bedford 55, Ar-We-Va 54
Bedford’s Kayla Lindenmeyer made two free throws at just the right time.
The Bulldogs missed six straight foul shots in the fourth quarter before Lindenmeyer dropped in a pair with 31.3 seconds left, giving her third-ranked team the cushion it needed to beat sixth-ranked Ar-We-Va 55-54 in first-round Class 1A play.
Bedford won for the first time in three tries at state and will take a 25-1 record into a semifinal game at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Caila Raymond led Bedford with 20 points and 13 rebounds. She made her first seven shots and finished 9-for-12 from the field. Lindenmeyer finished with 19 points and Savanna Thornton scored 11, including a go-ahead 3-pointer late in the game.
Dani Kock led Ar-We-Va with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore Paige Danner scored 14 and had four steals. Ar-We-Va, the state runner-up last year, finished 21-4.
Lindenmeyer’s two free throws gave Bedford a 55-52 lead, meaning Ar-We-Va needed a 3-pointer to tie it. The Rockets missed from long range and Kock scored on a putback for the final points.
LeMars Gehen Catholic 52, North Butler 34
The ninth-ranked Jays broke the game open in the second quarter and beat No. 2 North Butler 52-34 in a first-round Class 1A game.
Steph Rohe scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Gehlen in its first-ever state tournament game. The Jays improved to 21-4 and will play third-ranked Bedford in a semifinal game at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Rohe also had six of Gehlen’s 13 steals. Katelin Langel added nine points and nine rebounds for the Jays, while Emily Holtgrewe and Amber Timmins each scored eight.
Lisa Feldman led North Butler with 10 points. Cassidy Bangasser led the Bearcats with seven rebounds and scored six points.
West Sioux 54, Lynnville-Sully 43
A third-quarter comeback and clutch fourth-quarter shooting carried West Sioux to a victory in its first-ever state tournament game.
Jade Lynn Vlotho scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and fifth-ranked West Sioux rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat No. 4 Lynnville-Sully 54-43 in a first-round Class 1A game.
Dana Weerheim added 16 points for the Falcons, including a key 3-pointer and four big free throws in the fourth quarter. Carissa Anderson helped out with 11 points, while Shannon Kots grabbed 13 rebounds to go with seven points.
West Sioux improved to 25-1 and will play a semifinal game at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Lynnville-Sully, in the tournament for the third straight year and ninth time overall, finished 23-3. Brianna James led the Hawks with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Brittany Bryan scored 11 points. It was the final high school game for both, with James finishing her career with more than 1,000 points.
North Mahaska 47, North Tama 35
Top-ranked North Mahaska has held teams in check all season and the unbeaten Warhawks did it again in their first game at the Class 1A state tournament.
North Mahaska scored the game’s final 10 points and beat No. 13 North Tama 47-35 to complete the semifinal pairings. The Warhawks will take a 26-0 record against No. 5 West Sioux at 8:30 Saturday night.
Mallory Boyle and Abbie Agan led North Mahaska with 13 points each. Boyle also grabbed seven rebounds, while Agan made four of her team’s 12 steals. She turned her final steal into a layup that gave the Warhawks a 10-point lead in the final minute.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis has found a new home at Iowa after a year out of the game. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz announced Monday that Davis will be his new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Davis replaces Ken O’Keefe, who left the Hawkeyes after 13 seasons to become the wide receivers coach with the Miami Dolphins. The 60-year-old Davis has spent 33 years as a college coach, including a stint as the head coach at Tulane from 1988-91. But he’s perhaps best known for the 13 years he spent working for Texas coach Mack Brown. Davis resigned shortly after the 2010 season, when the Longhorns finished 5-7.
Though his stint with the Longhorns ended poorly, the program boasted some of its best offenses in under Davis. He coached the likes of Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams and quarterbacks Vince Young and Colt McCoy, both Heisman finalists, and had five players earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors. Texas won a pair of Big 12 championships and the 2005 BCS national championship with Davis on its staff, and Davis was named the Frank Broyles assistant coach of the year after the Longhorns beat USC for the national title. Davis graduated from McNeese State in 1973 and, after a short stint coaching high school ball in Texas, became the quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M. Davis also made stops at Arkansas, Georgia and North Carolina before landing in Austin with Brown. The hiring of Brown concludes a rather chaotic offseason for the Iowa coaching staff, which saw by far its most upheaval in 13 years under Ferentz.
The Hawkeyes promoted defensive backs coach Phil Parker to replace retired defensive coordinator Norm Parker (no relation), moved offensive line coach Reese Morgan to the defensive line and hired Brian Ferentz, Kirk’s son, away from the New England Patriots to coach the offensive linemen.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s Matt Gatens is the Big Ten’s co-Player of the Week, the first such honor for the senior from Iowa City.
Gatens scored a career-high 33 points in last Thursday’s 67-66 win over Wisconsin. Gatens then scored 22 points in a 65-54 loss at Illinois on Sunday, his fourth straight game with at least 20 points.
Gatens, who shares the player of the week honor with Purdue’s Robbie Hummel, is the first Iowa player to earn the award since Jake Kelly on March 9, 2009.
The Hawkeyes (15-14, 7-9 Big Ten) close out their road schedule at Nebraska on Wednesday.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Albert Pujols hasn’t connected for his first homer and he’s already having a powerful impact on the Los Angeles Angels.
The superstar slugger, who signed a $240 million free agent contract with the club in December, has impressed his new teammates with an unparalleled work ethic so far in spring training. Pujols has been one of the first players to report each morning and one of the last to leave. Following the Angels’ first full-squad workout of camp Monday, when Pujols hit laser-beam line drives during batting practice, outfielder Torii Hunter said he gets “a great vibe” just being around the All-Star first baseman.
Hunter said he can learn how to become a better hitter just by watching Pujols swing in the batting cage.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — It isn’t easy to overlook Iowa State guard Scott Christopherson anymore.
Christopherson, a 6-foot-3 senior from LaCrosse, Wis., scored a season-high 29 points to lead Iowa State over host Kansas State 65-61 on Saturday. The victory might have clinched the program’s first NCAA tournament berth in seven years.
Christopherson makes 47.9 percent of his 3-pointers, best in the Big 12, and he has hit 22 of his last 34 attempts. He is also second in the Big 12 in free-throw shooting at 89.7 percent.
Christopherson and the Cyclones play at No. 7 Missouri on Wednesday and finish the regular season at home against No. 9 Baylor on Saturday.
IRVING, Texas – Iowa State junior forward Chelsea Poppens has been recognized as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as selected by a media voting panel for games Feb. 20-26. Poppens was recognized for the third time this season and fourth occasion in her career.
Poppens averaged 22 points and 16.5 rebounds last week in Iowa State’s overtime win over Missouri and loss at Oklahoma State. She finished with 25 points, 16 rebounds and four steals against the Tigers. The junior forward shot 15-of-24 from the free-throw line – an Iowa State record and a Big 12 league game record for free-throw attempts.
Poppens followed that performance with 19 points and a season-high tying 17 rebounds at OSU. It was her 14th double-double of the season. She has seven games this season with 15-plus rebounds and also seven with 20-plus points. Poppens is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double with 15.2 points and 11.3 rebounds. Her eight double-doubles in conference play leads all Big 12 players.
Oklahoma State’s Liz Donohoe was named freshman of the week.
