DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It sounds like Drake is preparing to host postseason basketball next week. The Bulldogs sent out an e-mail Tuesday telling season-ticket holders it can pre-order tickets in “anticipation of a possible invitation” to a postseason tournament starting Wednesday. Drake says if it’s awarded a home game for a tournament to be announced later, that matchup would be held during the middle of next week. The Bulldogs finished just 17-15 and have an RPI of 134, so an invitation to the NIT seems doubtful at best. The College Basketball Invitational or CollegeInsider.com tournaments would be next in line for a team with a resume like Drake’s.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Online volunteer registration for the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship to be held at Omaha Country Club is now open.
More than 3,000 volunteers are needed to fill positions on more than 30 committees, including marshals, transportation, leaderboards and merchandise. Early submission of the application allows volunteers to specify their committee preference.
People interested in volunteering can visit www.2013ussenioropen.com. A full description of committee responsibilities is provided on the website to assist volunteers in determining their preferences.
All volunteers are required to purchase the volunteer package for $125. It includes two championship golf shirts, one windbreaker, one ball cap or visor, one water bottle and one volunteer credential valid for all seven days of the championship.
Volunteers also receive free food and drink on the days they work.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State heads to the Big 12 tournament filled with hope rather than dread for the first time in years.
The 25th-ranked Cyclones haven’t won a conference tournament game since 2005. But Iowa State has accomplished a lot of things recently that it hasn’t in years, including the program’s first Top 25 ranking since November 2005.
The Cyclones (22-9, 12-6 Big 12) head to Kansas City as the third seed and with much larger goals than simply snapping their six-game losing skid in the league tournament.
Iowa State opens Thursday night against Texas (19-12, 9-9), which it split with during the regular season.
Coach Fred Hoiberg says he likes the way the Cyclones are playing right now, adding that they’ve got a lot of confidence.
Iowans have a chance tonight (Tuesday) to express their opinions about several proposed changes in hunting and trapping regulations for next fall. Perhaps the biggest change would apply to deer hunters. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Bureau Chief Dale Garner says some areas of the state have too many deer, but other areas have dropped below or near department goals. “We would like to reduce the antlerless tags to stabilize the herd,” Garner said.
The proposed changes involve shortening the length of the January deer hunting season, eliminating the November antlerless season altogether and changing the early muzzleloader season to reduce the harvest in the antlerless portion of the deer herd. The proposals are meant to satisfy the concerns of hunters who believe deer reduction efforts have gone too far. The DNR estimates deer numbers in Iowa are down 30% compared to a high mark in 2006. Iowa hunters, during the recent 2011-12 deer hunting seasons, killed 121,407 deer — down 4.5% from the previous year. Changes are proposed for waterfowl hunting and trapping as well.
“We’re looking to potentially increase quotas for both otters and bobcats,” Garner said. “For migratory birds, we have an opportunity to possibly add a (third) zone to the state, which will impact us for four years, so this is a chance for people to think about what that might do.” The possible changes will be discussed during public meetings tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at 18 locations across the state. The 2011-12 All-Big Ten Men’s Basketball Teams were announced live on the Big Ten Network Monday night. Michigan State star Draymond Green was the only unanimous first-team player and also won Player of the Year from the coaches and the media, while Green’s coach, Tom Izzo, claimed both Coach of the Year honors. As for the highly debated Freshman of the Year laurel, Trey Burke (media) and Cody Zeller (coaches) were both selected.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have made Dwayne Bowe their franchise player, keeping the impact wide receiver off the free-agent market this off season. Kansas City made the move less than an hour before Monday’s deadline, even though it had long been expected. Bowe is guaranteed a salary of about $9.5 million next season, though the Chiefs have indicated they would like to sign him to a long-term deal. Bowe could still field offers from other teams, but the Chiefs would have the right to match. If they decline, they would lose Bowe but receive two first-round draft picks. Bowe had 81 catches for 1,159 yards and five touchdowns last season, even though Kansas City struggled with injuries to quarterback Matt Cassel and running back Jamal Charles. Bowe had 72 catches for 1,162 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2010, when he made the Pro Bowl.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Greg Davis spent 13 seasons calling the plays at Texas in a league famous for innovative attacks. Now Davis is coordinating the offense for Iowa, often seen as the epitome of conservative Big Ten football. Davis says the plan will be to merge the best of both worlds to create a system that can work for the Hawkeyes. Davis, the former offensive coordinator under Mack Brown at Texas, met with the media Monday for the first time since taking over as the Hawkeyes offensive coordinator for Ken O’Keefe Davis says he and coach Kirk Ferentz have discussed blending philosophies to create a system unique to Iowa.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is ranked 25th in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll.
It’s the first time the Cyclones (22-9, 12-6) have been ranked in the AP poll since November of 2005 — a drought that lasted 130 weeks.
Iowa State is coming off an 80-72 win over then-No. 9 Baylor in Saturday’s regular-season finale.
The Cyclones earned the No. 3 seed for the Big 12 tournament and will face sixth-seeded Texas in Kansas City on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
