KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The University of Iowa rowing team finished its weekend competing in the Big Ten/Big 12 Double dual on Saturday at Wyandotte County Lake.

The Hawkeyes competed in the 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 4V8, 1V4, 2V4 and 3V4 with a field consisting of Kansas, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

Iowa’s top placements of the day came from six of the Hawkeyes’ seven boats all placing first to end the weekend.

The Hawkeyes will return to action April 19 for the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla.

“Today’s racing capped off a great weekend of progress. Whenever we get to race twice, I look to see how the squad handles the racing and makes corrections between the two days. This weekend was a success in that category. All boats were able to show the needed changes.

“The weather and wind were challenging, but all the boats responded well and handled the wind.

“Winning 12 out of 14 races is a testament to the depth that is developing here in Iowa City. It’s time to enjoy the ride home, the beautiful Sunday that lies ahead and get ready to roll up our sleeves and get ready for the Big Ten Invite next weekend. COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its series opener against Ohio State on Friday night, 8-5, at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Park.

The Buckeyes struck first in the second inning scoring two runs and led the remainder of the contest. Ohio State added two in the fourth before the Hawkeyes cut the lead to one in the fifth, but a two-run bottom half extended the Ohio State lead again. Ohio State was able to match Iowa’s two runs in the remainder of the contest to win by three.

Cade Obermueller made his second career Friday night start. He threw four innings and face two batters in the fifth. He allowed six runs on six hits and struck out six while walking three.

Aaron Savary threw two 1/3 innings scattering four hits and allowing one run Jack Young closed out the final 1 2/3 innings of the game allowing one run on two hits.

“The guys played hard and never gave up, said head coach Rick Heller. “We just didn’t play or pitch well enough to win tonight. Ohio State played a good game.”

Andy Nelson and Raider Tello each had two RBIs for the Hawkeyes. Tello had a solo home run in the fourth inning that cleared the right field wall and an RBI groundout in the fifth.

Gable Mitchell added an RBI for the Hawkeyes.

“We cut their lead to one in the fifth,” said Heller. “Then we go out and give them two runs with a ball never leaving the infield. We give up a two-out run in the sixth and another in the eighth. Take those away and it’s a different ball game. Combine all that with the Buckeyes taking advantage of us on the bases all night and it makes it tough to win.”

The Buckeyes stole seven bases against the Hawkeyes.

AMES, Iowa – For the second straight meeting, Iowa State (15-21, 4-9 Big 12) toppled a top-five Oklahoma State (34-7, 12-4) team, this time in shutout fashion – 2-0.

The Cyclones couldn’t have asked for a better time to earn their first shutout of the season, as the combination of Lauren Schurman (3-3) and Jaiden Ralston (2) blanked the Cowgirls in Ames. Ashley Minor was the difference for the Cyclones, as the sophomore drove in both runs, one via long ball and the other via bases-loaded HBP, as ISU only needed two to take down OSU.

Iowa State showed it could win differently today, earning its first win of the season when scoring two or fewer runs. It was just the third time all year Iowa State earned a win while being outhit. Today was also the first time any Iowa State team defeated the fifth-ranked team in the NFCA poll, as ISU was previously 0-7.

 Olivia Wardlow and Angelina Allen joined Minor in the hit column, with Allen earning a hit in her tenth consecutive game – the longest streak of her career. Tiana Poole, Tatum Johnson and Minor all drew walks, as OSU pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl gave up more walks today than she had in a single game all year.

Schurman earned her third win of her freshman year, giving up five hits across five frames and striking out a pair of Cowgirls. Ralston entered with the Cyclones up 1-0 and closed the game out, tossing a hitless final two innings to earn her second save of the year.

Rosie Davis led the Cowgirl attack, as she tallied a pair of hits while three others notched one. OSU was unable to draw any freebies from the Cyclone staff, as ISU didn’t walk or hit any batters. Kilfoyl (15-3) allowed just three hits and struck out seven, but her five free bases (three walks and two HBP) caught up to her. She took a no-hitter into the fifth before Minor’s solo shot broke up the no-no

The Cyclones and Cowgirls will be back at it tomorrow afternoon, as the two teams square off in game number two at the Cyclone Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Tomorrow’s game will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

IOWA CITY – The 61st-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team dropped a 4-1 Big Ten dual against No. 16 Ohio State on Friday night at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

The loss drops the Hawkeyes’ record to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in Big Ten action.

Iowa opened the day strong, winning two tiebreaker matches and earning the doubles point.

Junior Marisa Schmidt and sophomore Nikita Vishwase captured the first win in the No. 3 spot over pair Alessia Cau and Madeline Atway, 6-4.

Following the win at No. 3, courts one and two were deadlocked at six all.

At No. 2, junior Barbora Pokorna and sophomore Pia Kranholdt fought, but fell in the tiebreaker to Sydni Ratliff and Audrey Spencer, 7-6.

At the top spot, sophomore Daianne Hayashida and senior Vipasha Mehra captured the doubles point with a 7-6 (9-7) victory over No. 31 Irina Cantos and Luciana Perry.

The Buckeyes captured the dual win with four singles victories at No. 2, 3, 4, and 6.

Although the match went unfinished due to Ohio State’s victory, Mehra secured a win in her first set in the No. 5 spot over Teah Chaves, 7-5.

The Hawkeyes will finish home competition on Sunday morning at the HTRC. Iowa will recognize its lone senior, Vipasha Mehra, prior to the dual against Penn State.
