November 2nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

A head-on collision in eastern Iowa claimed two lives, Saturday morning. The Iowa State Patrol reports both drivers, 62-year old Bradford J. Stiles, of Iowa City, and 35-year old Lydia Louise Schirmer, of Williamsburg, died, when their vehicles collided at around 8:45-a.m. on Highway 151, just south of Amana.

The Patrol says a 2006 Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by Stiles, was traveling north on Highway 151 at the Iowa River bridge, when the vehicle went out of control on the frost covered bridge. The pickup crossed the centerline of the road and struck Schirmer’s 2008 Honda CRV. Both vehicles came to rest on the road. Both drivers died at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department, Amana Fire Department and 1st Responders, and an Iowa DOT maintenance crew.

Second man charged in Iowa man’s stabbing death

News

November 2nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A second man has been charged in the stabbing death of an Iowa man whose body was found months after his disappearance in December 2018.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Drew Wagner turned himself in Friday and is charged with first-degree murder and other counts in the death of Christopher Bagley. Wagner is being held on $1 million bond.

The charge came a day after Drew Blahnik also was charged with first-degree murder in Bagley’s death.
Investigators testified earlier this year that Blahnik confessed to fatally stabbing Bagley in retaliation for his robbery of a large-scale marijuana trafficker.

Bagley disappeared last December from his home in Walker, Iowa. Investigators found his body buried in the backyard of a Cedar Rapids residence in March.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced the removal of four Superfund sites in Nebraska and Iowa from their national priorities list. The Iowa sites removed include the Electro-Coatings Inc. Site in Cedar Rapids, where groundwater was contaminated with chemicals from a chrome, nickel, and zinc plating operation, and the Shaw Avenue Dump Site in Charles City, where groundwater was contaminated with arsenic and other toxins from a municipal dump operated in the 40s and 50s.

The removed sites include the Omaha Lead Site in Omaha, which initially included some 14,000 properties in eastern Omaha with high lead levels, and the Cleburn Street Well Site in Grand Island, where groundwater was contaminated by hazardous chemicals from a dry-cleaning business.

The sites were among 11 others across the country removed from the priorities list.

2 arrested following raid of Des Moines unregistered daycare

News

November 2nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa prosecutors say in court documents that a police raid of a Des Moines home earlier this year turned up drugs, guns and more than a dozen children in the care of an unregistered day care operation.

The Des Moines Register reports that police arrested two people in the case early Friday. Robert and Paula Mackey face multiple felony charges of child neglect and possession of drugs, as well as operating an unregistered day care.

Court documents say the search of the Mackeys’ home occurred in June, when police found more than 20 handguns and rifles, about three grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and 17 children. Iowa law restricts unregistered day care providers from caring for more than five children.

Police say they found guns and drugs within reach of children throughout the home.
