Ferentz Makes More Changes to Staff

Sports

March 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz has made additional changes to his coaching staff. Recruiting coordinator Eric Johnson will move from tight ends coach and assist with the defensive line and graduate assistant David Raih will coach the tight ends. Ferentz says the change will allow Johnson to focus more of his attention on recruiting. He says the demands of that segment of the organization are so strong that his goal was to get Johnson in a position where he could dedicate more time to that area. Ferentz says Johnson is doing  a lot of work for the Hawkeyes, with regard to personnel, and it’s a “critical job, and always has been”, especially in the way recruiting is constantly undergoing changes.  Ferentz says by assisting with the defensive line Johnson will be more free to travel during the season. It is the latest of several changes on the Iowa staff which includes new offensive and defensive coordinators.

March 28th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Adam Wainwright struggled for 4 2-3 innings Wednesday in his final tuneup against big league hitters as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 9-5.  Wainwright, coming off reconstructive surgery on his right elbow that sidelined him for the entire 2011 season, had pitched 16 innings without allowing an earned run this spring before the Tigers broke through. Wainwright allowed four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and a walk.  His final outing before opening day is expected to be against Cardinals minor leaguers.  Jhonny Peralta broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the third. Andy Dirks later hit a two-run single.

Poppens Earns All-America Honor From Associated Press

Sports

March 28th, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior forward Chelsea Poppens has been recognized as an honorable mention All-American by The Associated Press.

Poppens, an Aplington, Iowa native, was the only Big 12 player to average a double-double this season. She averaged a career-best 14.2 points and 10.6 rebounds en route to being named one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 first team. Poppens’ 317 rebounds make her just the second Cyclone to grab over 300 in a season. Former Cyclone All-American Angie Welle accomplished the feat in 2001 and 2002.

Poppens led the Big 12 in offensive rebounds, grabbing 4.4 per game, and shot 49.8 percent from the field. She improved from the free-throw line as a junior, shooting 71.3 percent from the charity stripe after entering the season as a 64.1 percent shooter.

ISU Looking for Starting QB After Up-and-Down 2011

Sports

March 27th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — It’s been over a year since Iowa State’s starting quarterback job came open. The Cyclones still can’t figure who their top guy will be. Iowa State spent the first week of spring practice embroiled in yet another quarterback competition. This time, the Cyclones are hoping either Steele Jantz or Jared Barnett grab hold of the team’s most important position. Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads didn’t offering any hints about the state of the competition on Tuesday, except to praise Jantz and Barnett for their work habits so far this offseason.
