Drake Relays Officials Hope to Break Attendance Mark

Sports

April 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Drake Relays are hoping for another attendance record for this month’s event. Single session tickets went on sale last week and associate athletic director Dennis Francois says all-session packages are still available. Reserved adult tickets for all sessions are $85.  An “All American” package, which covers Friday night and Saturday, for $55. A “Gold” package — which has two levels: Day only, Friday and the Saturday session, for $70; and a Friday & Friday night package for $45.  Francois says the ticket packages are designed for different fan bases. He says there is a special price for Thursday’s distance carnival, of $5. Francois says plenty of tickets remain for all sessions but they expect the Saturday afternoon session to sell out for the 47th consecutive year.Francois says there are two ways to order tickets: call the Drake ticket office at 515-271-3647, or online at www.godrakebulldogs.com.  The Drake Relays are April 26th through the 28th.

Cardinals Pull April Fools’ Prank on Wainwright

Sports

April 2nd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — A lucky fan was about to win a truck, and Adam Wainwright thought it was pretty cool. Until the St. Louis Cardinals pitcher realized it was his white pickup. Cardinals teammates Lance Berkman and Skip Schumaker pulled off an April Fools’ Day prank Sunday that had Wainwright hoping at first that it was all just for laughs. “As long as that’s a joke, that is well done,” Wainwright said. “I don’t know if that’s a joke, yet.” Turned out, it sure was. Following the second inning of the Cardinals’ 2-1 spring training loss to the Washington Nationals, public address announcer John Frost read a fake script proclaiming that a fan won a car. Berkman drove it onto the field, and Wainwright quickly realized it was a prank aimed at him.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Mark DeRosa singled to right field in the ninth inning, scoring Danny Espinosa on a close play at the plate and lifting the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals had an opportunity in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Ryan Mattheus struck out Matt Carpenter to end the game. Jaime Garcia cruised through the first 5 2-3 innings for St. Louis, allowing only four hits. Danny Espinoza homered for the Nationals and Gio Gonzalez put two tough outings behind him by allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven in five innings. St. Louis scored on back-to-back doubles by Tyler Greene and Carlos Beltran in the fourth.

Lohse pitches, hits Cardinals to victory, Friday

Sports

March 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Lohse allowed an unearned run and three hits in six innings and singled in a run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Friday. Lohse did receive a scare, though. Omar Quintanilla’s well struck grounder in the third inning hit Lohse in hand. After the play, the trainer came out to check on Lohse, who said he simply needed a few moments to let the tingling in his ring and pinkie fingers subside. Lohse was given an error on the play — the Cardinals’ second consecutive error — and the run scored by Mike Nickeas was unearned. Lohse stayed in the game, allowing only one more hit and walking one through the final three innings. The Cardinals took the lead for good in the fourth, with Lohse driving in the go-ahead run. The Mets’ Dillion Gee gave up 10 hits and four runs in six innings.

Brian Ferentz Hired From Pool of 102

Sports

March 30th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz’s son was hired away from the New England Patriots as the Hawkeyes offensive line coach out of 102 applicants who sought two open assistant coaching positions. The university released records Friday to The Associated Press showing Brian Ferentz was given a salary of $202,400, placing his compensation in the top half of offensive line coaches in the Big 10. The other assistant hired at the same time, linebackers coach LeVar Woods, will earn $187,000. University officials justified the salary difference because Brian Ferentz had more coaching experience than Woods, an administrative assistant with the team who coached as an interim assistant in two seasons. Brian Ferentz had been with the Patriots four years, and hiring documents say he was recruited by another college program.

Marlins Beat Cardinals Thursday Afternoon 3-1

Sports

March 29th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Anibal Sanchez allowed a run in five innings, including Carlos Beltran’s second homer, and the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Thursday. Sanchez had been limited to three starts this spring because of a sore shoulder. He gave up two hits and a walk. Cardinals starter Lance Lynn matched Sanchez, allowing one run on five hits in five innings. Lynn, who is taking the place of Chris Carpenter in the rotation, will make his first start on April 8 at Milwaukee. Daniel Pertusati, a minor leaguer who has never played higher than Class A, hit a tying homer off Lynn in the fifth.

Baylor Coach Mulkey Diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy

Sports

March 29th, 2012 by Jim Field

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a form of facial paralysis she says won’t change her approach going into the NCAA Final Four.

Mulkey said Thursday that her tongue started feeling strange at the NCAA regional in Des Moines last weekend. Before practice Wednesday, she noticed only the left side of her mouth was working when she smiled, her right eye was drooping and she couldn’t hear properly out of her right ear.

Mulkey went to a doctor rather than going to practice Wednesday.

Trainer Alex Olson says Mulkey is being treated with anti-viral medication and oral steroids to reduce the inflammation of the facial nerve that causes the problem.

Baylor plays Stanford on Sunday in the NCAA tournament semifinals.

UNC’s Barnes, Henson, Marshall Entering NBA Draft

Sports

March 29th, 2012 by Jim Field

(AP) –North Carolina underclassmen Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Kendall Marshall will enter the NBA draft.

The school announced their departures in a statement Thursday afternoon.

In the statement, coach Roy Williams says he is happy the three are pursuing their goals of playing in the NBA, but sad “because I won’t get to coach them again.”

Barnes, a 6-foot-8 sophomore from Ames, averaged about 17 points to lead the team. Henson, a 6-11 junior, averaged about 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Marshall, a 6-4 sophomore, won the Cousy Award presented to the nation’s top college point guard earlier Thursday.

Marshall set the ACC’s single-season assists record. He missed the last two NCAA tournament games after breaking his right wrist.

The Tar Heels (32-6) lost to Kansas in a regional final.
