Simpson, Spearmon to Run at Drake Relays

Sports

April 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — U.S. distance running star Jenny Simpson, the 2011 world champion at 1,500 meters, says she’ll open her outdoor season at the Drake Relays. Drake organizers announced Tuesday that Simpson and two-time U.S. outdoor 200-meter champion Wallace Spearmon, Jr., will compete in the meet, which is set for April 26-28. Simpson grew up in Webster City and later had a record-breaking career at the University of Colorado. She won the 1,500 at Drake last year in 4:09.56, then captured the world title four months later in Daegu, South Korea. Spearmon won the men’s 200 at Drake in 2010, the last time the event was held.

Marlins Open New Ballpark Against Champion Cards

Sports

April 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) – Perched atop the Miami Marlins’ colorful, provocative home-run sculpture is a blue marlin, poised for splashdown whenever the home team hits one out. Call the artwork what you will – gaudy, goofy, grotesque, great – but there’s no denying it’s new. For the Marlins, that’s what this season is all about. They’ve become a big-spending, attention-grabbing team as they open the season at home Wednesday night against the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins predict they’ll contend for the NL East title – and more. When ace Josh Johnson throws the first pitch in the new ballpark, the Marlins will begin trying to supplant the Cardinals, who mounted an improbable late-season charge to the World Series title.

Cards Rest Most Regulars in Final Spring Tuneup, Beat Springfield 3-2

Sports

April 3rd, 2012 by Ric Hanson

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals prospect Trevor Rosenthal pitched four perfect innings and the World Series champions rested most of their regulars Monday night in their final exhibition tuneup, a 3-2 victory over Double-A Springfield. Ronny Gil, ticketed for Class-A Palm Beach and subbing for Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay, homered off Springfield reliever Keith Butler in the seventh, providing the difference. The Cardinals open Wednesday night in Miami, the first regular-season game at the Marlins’ new ballpark. Matt Holliday and World Series MVP David Freese played four innings apiece, each getting two at-bats, and reliever Kyle McClellan thwarted a rally by inducing an inning-ending double play in the fifth, the only inning worked by a big league reliever.

Nebraska Alternate Uniform to Respect Tradition

Sports

April 2nd, 2012 by Jim Field

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska plans to wear an alternate uniform for one home football game this season, though athletic director Tom Osborne says the design won’t diverge much from the Cornhuskers’ traditional look.

Osborne said Monday the design has not been finalized. He couldn’t offer any details other than that the uniforms would be “futuristic” but “not outlandish.”

Osborne said Adidas, the Huskers’ apparel and footwear provider since 1995, proposed changing the color of the helmets. Osborne said the white helmet with the iconic red “N” would not be touched.

A number of colleges have unveiled alternate uniforms in recent seasons, notably Nike-sponsored Oregon. Osborne said the changes are popular with the players and give the uniform maker a chance to sell more apparel to fans.

ISU’s Poppens Named WBCA Honorable Mention All-American

Sports

April 2nd, 2012 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior forward Chelsea Poppens has been recognized as an honorable mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Last week, Poppens took home the same recognition from The Associated Press.

Poppens, an Aplington, Iowa native, was the only Big 12 player to average a double-double this season. She averaged a career-best 14.2 points and 10.6 rebounds en route to being named one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big 12 first team. Poppens’ 317 rebounds make her just the second Cyclone to grab over 300 in a season. Former Cyclone All-American Angie Welle accomplished the feat in 2001 and 2002.

Poppens led the Big 12 in offensive rebounds, grabbing 4.4 per game, and shot 49.8 percent from the field. She improved from the free-throw line as a junior, shooting 71.3 percent from the charity stripe after entering the season as a 64.1 percent shooter.
