Iowa to Unveil Dan Gable Statue Next Week

Sports

April 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa will unveil a bronze statue of former wrestling coach Dan Gable next week. The university says the seven-foot statue will sit outside the main entrance to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It will be unveiled on Wednesday, three days before the start of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City. Gable wrestled for Iowa State and won gold at the Olympics in 1972. He went on to lead the Hawkeyes to 15 national championships in 21 seasons as coach. Gable has remained active in wrestling and in promoting the upcoming Olympic Trials.

Rulon Gardner Slimming Down for Final Shot

Sports

April 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner is 40 years old, he has dropped 200 pounds and he wants to make the U.S. Olympic team headed to London this summer. If he wants to keep that dream alive, he needs to lose another 25 pounds in just 15 days. The deadline for Gardner’s comeback as a Greco-Roman heavyweight is April 20. That’s when he must weigh 264.5 pounds or less to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa. Gardner told The Associated Press in a phone interview on Thursday that he’s “close to 290” pounds, which is slightly above his goal with two weeks to go. But Gardner says losing the weight has given him a chance to start his life over again.

Drake Sophomore Guard Rayvonte Rice to Transfer

Sports

April 6th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake guard Rayvonte Rice, the third-leading scorer in the Missouri Valley Conference this past season, has been granted a release from his scholarship so he can transfer to another school. Drake coach Mark Phelps announced Rice’s abrupt release Thursday without specifying why he is leaving the program. Rice’s departure is a serious blow for the Bulldogs. Rice was a second-team All-MVC pick last season, averaging 16.8 points. The sophomore says in a statement that leaving the Bulldogs is a decision he felt he had to make. Phelps says he remains confident about the program’s future, adding that Drake fans will be excited by what they see next season.

Cards Spoil Marlins Debut in New Ballpark

Sports

April 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MIAMI (AP) — Kyle Lohse didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning and pitched into the eighth Wednesday night to help the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals spoil the Miami Marlins’ debut in their new ballpark, 4-1. The Marlins’ new animated home-run sculpture never budged. It was the fourth inning before they managed a baserunner, and but the time they scored in the eighth, they trailed 4-0. The crowd of 36,601 included newly retired Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who quietly rooted for his former team from the press box. Lohse went 7 1-3 innings, allowing only two hits and one run. David Freese, the World Series MVP, had a two-run single in the first inning to give Lohse the cushion he needed.

Iowa RB Canzeri to Have Knee Surgery

Sports

April 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back Jordan Canzeri was scheduled for surgery Wednesday to repair a torn knee ligament and could miss the 2012 season. Coach Kirk Ferentz says Canzeri is expected to need at least five to six months to recover. Ferentz wouldn’t rule out a return by Canzeri next fall, saying it all depends on how quickly Canzeri can recover. The school did not identify which knee was injured. Canzeri rushed for 114 yards as a freshman in 2011, including 58 in a loss to Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl. Canzeri’s absence pushes fellow sophomores Damon Bullock and De’Andre Johnson up the depth chart. Incoming freshmen Greg Garmon and Barkley Hill will also get a chance for playing time in 2012.
