New Look Cardinals Clicking as They Return Home

Sports

April 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — So far, the St. Louis Cardinals are doing just fine without Albert Pujols. And they don’t seem to miss Tony La Russa, either. The World Series champions are off to a nice start heading into Friday’s home opener against the Chicago Cubs. During their impressive 5-2 start on the road under new manager Mike Matheny, the Cardinals have gotten plenty of clutch hitting and pitching. The Cardinals lead the National League with a .301 average and their 12 home runs, 37 runs and .371 on-base percentage were the best in baseball through Wednesday’s games. David Freese and Rafael Furcal are hitting above .400, Kyle Lohse is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA and Jake Westbrook didn’t allow an earned run in his first outing. Adam Wainwright will pitch in the home opener, opposing the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija.

AP Source: CSU, Eustachy Agree to Deal

Sports

April 12th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

A person familiar with the hiring says Larry Eustachy is set to become Colorado State’s basketball coach. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the deal is only agreed upon and not finalized.  The embattled coach takes over for Tim Miles, who left for Nebraska last month after leading the Rams to the NCAA tournament.

Eustachy is coming off a season in which he guided Southern Mississippi to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1991.  It’s been a long road for Eustachy, who has rebuilt and restored his career in eight seasons at Southern Miss. Eustachy was a coach at Iowa State over a decade ago before his dramatic downfall. He resigned in 2003 shortly after photos of him partying with students surfaced.

Votto’s 4 Hits Help Reds Rally Past Cards 4-3

CINCINNATI (AP) — Joey Votto tied a career best with four hits and scored the go-ahead run on pinch-hitter Chris Heisey’s ninth-inning single, capping a comeback from a three-run deficit and leading the Cincinnati Reds over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Wednesday. Down 3-0 in the third against Jaime Garcia, the Reds tied the score in the fifth. Votto doubled off Marc Rzepczynski (0-1) leading off the ninth for his fourth four-hit game. Ryan Ludwick was intentionally walked, Jay Bruce struck out, Fernando Salas relieved and Heisey lined a single to left. Aroldis Chapman (2-0) struck out five in two scoreless innings, helping the Reds avoid a three-game sweep.

Iowa’s Davis Leans on Senior QB Vandenberg

Sports

April 11th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Everything is new for Iowa offensive coordinator Greg Davis, from his players to his fellow coaches and even Iowa City. It’s a good thing Davis has a veteran quarterback to lean on. The arduous task of installing a new offense this spring has been eased considerably by the presence of senior quarterback James Vandenberg. The pair already has developed a strong working relationship according to Davis, who says he’s been impressed by how quickly Vandenberg has grasped his offense. Davis also says he has never seen a tight end with the combination of size and ability to stretch the field like junior C.J. Fiedorowicz. Davis says the Hawkeyes will look to use Fiedorowicz to create mismatches next season.

Audubon’s JV team shot 199.  Lucas Smith-Petersen was low with 48, followed by Chris LaFoy (49), Chase Petersen (51), and Jalen Nelson (51).

Atlantic Girls Win 4-Team Golf Meet

Girls Golf Played at Fox Run in Council Bluffs

  1. Atlantic 191
  2. Harlan 202
  3. Lewis Central 211
  4. Glenwood 252

Medalist:  Brooke Fletcher, Atlantic – 43
Runner-up:  Kaitlynn Walter, Atlantic – 44

Other Atlantic scores:  Bailey Walter, 51; Shelby Worth, 53; Malachi Wickman 65; Katie Blake, 68

leader from other schools:  Adria Skarnulis, Glenwood – 59; Kayla Redeker, Lewis Central – 46; Kate Schomers, Harlan – 46

Coach Kathy Hobson says:

This was suppose to be a dual against Glenwood as their course is closed.  It turned out to be a triangular +1 as we will play Harlan again later in the season for a regularly scheduled match.  Brooke Fletcher really drove the ball nice tonight getting good distance and keeping her ball in the fairway.  Kaitlynn Walter, minus a couple of misques, could have shot one of her best 9 hole scores.  191 is a great score but really thought we might come in with a season low on this course.
