Chiefs Fill Needs On Final Draft Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs picked Junior Hemingway of Michigan in the seventh round of the NFL draft Saturday, going with a wide receiver for the second time on the final day of the NFL draft.

The Chiefs drafted Fresno State’s Devon Wylie in the fourth round.

Hemingway managed 34 catches for 699 yards and four touchdowns his senior season with the Wolverines. His stock rose at the scouting combine, where the 6-foot-1, 225-pound receiver posted the best numbers at his position in the three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle.

The Chiefs picked San Diego State defensive tackle Jerome Long earlier in the seventh round. They also picked Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray and Alabama defensive back De’Quan Menzie on Saturday, establishing some depth at the areas of greatest need.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Wallace Spearmon, Jr. broke the meet record in the 200 meters set by Michael Johnson 15 years ago, highlighting Saturday’s final session of the Drake Relays.

Spearmon crossed in 20.02 seconds, beating the mark Johnson set in 1997 by three-hundredths of a second.

U.S. pole vault star Jenn Suhr also set a meet mark with a winning effort of 15 feet, 3 inches on her first try, as did high jumper Chaunte Lowe at 6-6.

Those record-breaking performances came despite temperatures in the low 50s and steady wind that likely forced hometown star Lolo Jones to scratch from the 100-meter hurdles.

Jones said Friday that she was concerned about running in less than ideal conditions. She grew up in Des Moines and won the event from 2005-08.

Native Iowan Jenny Simpson, the reigning world champion in the 1,500, won in 4:12.95.

Faust had an overall record of 68-46 at AHST including many successful playoff campaigns.  Faust led AHST to the 2005 semifinals and three straight quarterfinal appearances from 2007-09.

ISU’s Osemele Drafted by Ravens

Sports

April 28th, 2012 by admin

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) – The Baltimore Ravens have selected Iowa State offensive tackle Kelechi Osemele with the 60th overall pick in the NFL draft.

Osemele is a 6-foot-5, 333-pounder who started 43 straight games on the Iowa State line. He played 38 of those games at left tackle and five at left guard.

The Ravens needed an offensive lineman after losing free agent Ben Grubbs to the New Orleans Saints.

Earlier in the second round, Baltimore made its first pick of the draft. General manager Ozzie Newsome chose Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw with the 35th overall selection, a pick obtained in a trade Thursday night with the Minnesota Vikings.

Newsome dealt the 29th overall pick to Minnesota for the 35th overall selection and a fourth-rounder.

Reiff passed on NFL’s offer to be in NYC for draft

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions offensive tackle Riley Reiff says he turned down an offer to be in New York for the NFL draft to celebrate with family in South Dakota. Especially, his 92-year-old grandfather, Lloyd Reiff. Reiff was in the family’s pole barn, which was recently constructed to replace a 100-year-old barn, in Parkston, S.D., when Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew called to say the team was taking him No. 23 overall Thursday night. The former Iowa standout acknowledged being nervous during a news conference Friday at Lions headquarters. Reiff is comfortable playing multiple positions on the offensive line and coach Jim Schwartz says there’s a possibility he’ll play for the team soon.
