DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa says that tickets for its season opener against Northern Illinois at Chicago’s Soldier Field are now available to the general public. The Hawkeyes say tickets range from $60-80 for the neutral site game, which will be held on Sept. 1.  Iowa says nearly 15,000 of its season-ticket holders have already purchased tickets.  The Hawkeyes finished 7-6 a year ago, while Northern Illinois won its last nine games. But Iowa is 7-0 against the Huskies, including a 16-3 win at Soldier Field in 2007.

Rafael Furcal hit the 30th leadoff home run of his career for St. Louis, the first of five homers for the Cardinals on the night. Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday hit consecutive homers to open the third off Joe Saunders (2-2). Allen Craig and David Freese homered to start the seventh after Arizona had scored six times in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-6. Iowa family gets $216,000 for balls signed by Ruth

Sports

May 7th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa family’s collection of baseballs signed by slugger Babe Ruth just before he died has sold at auction for more than $200,000.  Heritage Auctions director Chris Ivy says eight balls signed by Ruth during a trip to Spencer in 1948 sold for just over $216,000 on Friday.  One ball in near-mint condition went for $77,000, while two others sold for just over $13,000.  Ivy says Ruth visited a Ford dealership in Spencer owned by John Hart 64 years ago. Hart’s family kept eight of the dozens of balls Ruth signed in a safe deposit box for more than six decades until deciding recently to put them up for auction.
