Phillies Blank Cardinals Saturday

ST. LOUIS — Kyle Kendrick’s first win of the year was almost worth the wait.

The right-hander was in complete control with a seven-hitter for his first career shutout, putting the Philadelphia Phillies on the verge of their first four-game sweep in St. Louis since 1913 with a 4-0 victory on Saturday night.Shane Victorino’s RBI double in the fourth was the only support Kendrick (1-4) needed. John Mayberry added a two-run double in a three-run sixth, and Hunter Pence and Brian Schneider had two hits apiece for the Phillies, who have won four in a row.Roy Halladay (4-4, 3.58) pitches in the finale on Sunday, facing Adam Wainwright (3-5. 4.78)”That’s a good offense over there, so it’s a good feeling,” Kendrick said. “I wanted to go out there and finish it, give the bullpen a little rest and watch Roy throw tomorrow.”Kendrick entered with a 5.23 ERA and the Phillies were 1-9 in the games he pitched, five of them starts. But he’s 5-1 against the Cardinals in eight games, all but two of them starts, and three of the wins have come in St. Louis. He didn’t mind that it was 94 degrees at gametime.”This is one of my favorite places to pitch, Atlanta and here,” Kendrick said. “It’s warm, I like the humidity.”Jaime Garcia (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings for the Cardinals, who swept a three-game series against the Padres before hitting the wall against the team they upset in the NL division series last fall.  The Cards and the Phils play again on Sunday 5/27 with a 12:20 pregame on KJAN.

Phillies beat Cards 5-3 in 10 innings, Friday night

Sports

May 26th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning off Jason Motte and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night. The Phillies won their third in a row after surviving a fourth inning in which Pence, the right fielder, and Shane Victorino, the center fielder, lost balls in the lights. The winning runs came too late for Cliff Lee, a 17-game winner last season still seeking his first win of 2012. Juan Pierre singled to start the 10th against Motte, working his second inning. Pence had been hitless in nine at-bats before lining the St. Louis closer’s first pitch over the right field wall for his team-leading 11th homer. He’s 3 for 10 against Motte (3-2) with two homers and three RBIs.

Berkman undergoes surgery; expected out 8-10 weeks

Sports

May 25th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks following surgery Friday on his injured right knee. The team says the arthroscopic surgery found a partial tear in the medial meniscus, which was removed. Doctors also found cartilage tear, which was debrided. Berkman had feared possible damage to the anterior cruciate ligament. Berkman has played just 13 games this season, also missing significant time with a pulled left calf muscle. The knee injury occurred on May 19. He was a key part of the team’s championship run in 2011, hitting .301 with 31 homers and 94 RBIs in 145 games.
