Marian to hire former Butler coach Todd Lickliter

Sports

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Butler and Iowa coach Todd Lickliter is returning to his Indianapolis roots. Marian University, an NAIA school located just a few miles from the Butler campus, has called a Wednesday afternoon news conference to announce that it has hired Lickliter, a person with knowledge of the hire told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because the announcement hasn’t happened. Lickliter enjoyed his greatest basketball success in Indy, leading Butler to the NCAA tournament’s regional semifinals in 2003 and 2007 and was chosen the 2006-07 national coach of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He went 38-57 over the next three seasons at Iowa, a tenure that included health problems. He sat out 2010-11, then returned last season as an assistant at Miami (Ohio).

Florida looks for 1st national outdoor title

Sports

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Florida men’s track and field team has seemingly accomplished everything but a national outdoor title. The star-crossed Gators have finished in second place four times since 2004, and last season they wound up third after losing in the final race of the meet. But Florida has three straight indoor national titles to its credit and is once again among the favorites to win this year’s meet, which starts Wednesday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Texas A&M’s men and women have won the last three national outdoor titles, but most expect that streak of pulling off double titles to end in 2012. The Aggie men appear to stack up equally with Florida State and Florida, which can’t afford to focus on their past inability to break through at the outdoor meet like they have indoors. Texas A&M’s women’s team is expected to finish behind Oregon, LSU and Kansas.

Creston Man/Ex-PSU Wrestler Pleads in Sex Assault Case

Sports

June 5th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) – A former Penn State wrestler faces jail time after pleading guilty to aggravated indecent assault involving the mother of a fellow student.  Twenty-three-year-old Andrew Long will serve a sentence of at least one year minus a day for the assault last August on a 55-year-old woman. The Centre Daily Times of State College reports Long avoided a trial on charges including attempted rape by pleading guilty Monday.

Police say Long got into bed with the woman while she slept, removed her clothing and touched her.  The 23-year-old Creston, Iowa man was a key member of the Nittany Lions team that won the 2011 NCAA championship, finishing third at 133 pounds.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 30.

Kansas LB Farley Transferring to Northern Iowa

Sports

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Linebacker Jake Farley is transferring from Kansas to Northern Iowa, where the sophomore will play for his father. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Farley has been a scout squad player at Kansas, where his father Mark was an assistant coach from 1997-2000. Mark Farley is now the head coach at Northern Iowa. Kansas coach Charlie Weis met with Farley on Friday and said in a statement Monday that he wished him “success and happiness as he returns home to be with his family.” Farley said in the same statement that he’s been impressed with the job Weis has done since taking over for the fired Turner Gill after last season, but that the opportunity to play for his father and have his family watch him play was too good to pass up.
